Guidetti, life without the death-wish opponent

845

I see the story that Feyenoord are chasing John Guidetti has lasted more days than I expected.  John Guidetti is a likeable guy and seems to have enjoyed his time at Celtic, but he desperately needs to show some form before the end of the season if he is to attract the attention of Feyenoord or any team of that calibre.

One aspect often overlooked about Guidetti is his inexperience.  The player is still only 22 and had started only 30 games before arriving at Celtic Park last season, there’s a good chance that by the end of the season he will have played more games for Celtic than anyone else.  On paper, a season at Celtic was a chance to sort his career out, grab first team football at a prestigious club who were short of a centre forward.  Conversely, being kept out of the team by Leigh Griffiths will damage his reputation.

Barcabhoy sent me an interesting summary of Celtic’s material loss since the liquidation of Rangers.  The figures below compare the three years before Rangers liquidation with the two and a half years since.

As you see, even though we are comparing a shorter time period after liquidation, Celtic’s turnover and profitability is still miles better than when we had to compete with Rangers.

This should end any nonsense about Celtic needing or in any way missing Rangers.  We lost some revenue streams: domestic commercial and ticket income, but the slipstream to European revenues have more than made up for the gap.  More importantly, we are also no longer caught in an arms race with a death-risk opponent, allowing us to bring costs below income and plan longer than the current season.

Does anyone think that Guidetti’s form since January suggests that of a player seeking to earn a contract at Celtic or any other club?

Personally, I believe that he has already agreed to join a club, probably Feyenoord, at the end of the season and has no intention of busting a gut to impress anyone further.

  2. I wonder if anybody, anywhere, has the stats on how often Šćepović makes the run, loses his marker, screams for the ball, and the Celtic midfield play it back into their own half?

    Pfayr,

How does that phrase involving the Connan Doyle character go again??:)

I’ll Google it in two ticks but I can only recall the three against Partick and 1 v killie not being from open play.

You may be right but he is still plugging away and while his goals have dried up, he has still got 6 assists since January.

Sadly none of the stats sites I frequent collate that sort of data.

Cheers mate, I used to read in there, Soccerbase too. I don’t take anything they say as gospel. I like to believe my own eyes and make a personal assessment. In moments of boredom I used to compare transfer fees between the different sites, the anomalies were funny. Actually they weren’t they were damning..

Dunno about that.. guidetti has looked pretty angry with himself on a few occasions when he hasnt played well.

Even going training himself after a game.

For me it seems guidetti griffiths and maybe even scepovic are all good strikers who will score goals in this league but all would suit having a player up top alongside them… sadly its hard to do when ronnie has a good system that works.

Hooper was excellant with stokes beside him but on his own he didnt seem half the threat.

    Stoksey..

I reckon we will sell to free up wages/room for new players but to be fair and looking at morts stats he did really well this season up until christmas time..was played in a new role and knuckled down and got his share of goals and assists.

  12. The data on Celtic pre/post Ranger’s demise are interesting and a snatch at reality. Anyone suggest sources for a similar analysis of the SPL pre and post? It would be interesting to see the effects on individual teams like Aberdeen, DU, Caley at one end and St Mirren, Ross County, Motherwell at the other.

  13. It’s funny that I don’t actually feel that bothered about Guidetti no signing permanently, and it’s all down to the performances of a guy I was ready to consign to the “Riordan” bin; Leigh Griffiths.

On the centre back front, I am a bit more concerned for next season…

Then again, I am reliably informed that big Efe is actually a fantastic player and that it is me who is just a over-reacting nervous wreck when he has the ball, so everything should be fine…

    In Pauls words:

On paper, a season at Celtic was a chance to sort his career out, grab first team football at a prestigious club who were short of a centre forward.

Why was a prestigious club short of a centre forward and courted panic as a panacea?

It wouldn’t be that a certain Serb held out for a larger pay poke before putting pen to paper and pee’d off Austin only for a certain John Guidetti to sign two days latter and get the prima donna role as a wee slap in the face to a certain Serb???

I just noticed the season ticket prices for next season have been posted online. £50 increase for an adult ticket (£538 from £488) . Sadly due to work commitments I won’t be renewing (after 20 years). I have only managed 6 games this season (the midweek and Sundays are a killer) so I can’t justify paying £90 a match. I will still attend on a match by match basis (excluding ‘The Rangers’ games).

On a positive note I noticed the under 18 tickets prices have stayed at the same price as this season (excluding the ‘The Rangers’ games). Garngad to Croy Jr will still be renewing (puts his old man to shame).

  18. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

    Ernie,

You are asserting that our plc would prefer a wounded Rangers rather than a rejuvenated Scottish scene, which can only be due to cash generated. They want both, but that is a lie. That is my main concern and where I have lost the faith. Time to start acting humanely.

    HH

  19. Life without rangers eh. I for one hope never to see them again.

However without them we need to look at how we grow as a club and keep good financial health.

Cant help but think that the past few years CL successes have helped the celtic finances no end and I don’t expect the finances to be so good at the end of this year although the EL may have helped slightly.

Another repeat of last seasons CL show would seriously dent the finances and kind of highlights the importance of CL group stages qualification.

While we are coasting it domestically, it would be nice to see that we have some plan to avoid a recurrence of last seasons CL disasters.

    Do we?

  20. Tamrabam:

Excuse me if I’m wrong, and I’m happy to be corrected, but these European disasters, were last seasons disasters bigger than this seasons disasters?

Train journey from Seville to Cordoba (approx 1 hour) – allow yourself at least 5-6 hours to visit the sites

*we had a daughter working in Madrid so took a trip over there. Went to Seville for a few days and then the train to Cordoba. Really really hot, worth it though.

Seville’s great as well but give the plastic paddy pub a miss, it’s right beside the Cathedral which is worth the visit. Christopher Columbus’s tomb is in there.

Back to Madrid for the hop, skip and jump flight to Marrakech which was even hotter, we stayed in the Medina which was quite an experience.

We found the people to be exceptionally friendly. The on/off busses are they only way to see the place. We did that in Seville as well.

First night we had pigeon pie, Mrs. TT commented that the “chicken” although good was a bit different. Still disnae know she ate a “doo”.

Proves that it is all about perceptions.

I actually believe that he doesn’t give us any more than Stokes and Anthony, like one or two others, is an indication of where we were/ are and not where we hope to be, playing wise.

Therefore, neither for me,if we reach where Ronny wants to go.

Oh, and that goes for Kris, too.

  24. The Battered Bunnet on

    Ernie,

It’s beyond dispute that there are a significant number of Celtic supporters who no longer attend games following the demise of Rangers.

I reckon it’s between 2,000 and 4,000. (We lost a similar number of supporters when the Irish economy hit the iceberg.)

If/when new Rangers get into the top flight, some may return.

    Nostradamus impersonation…

If new Rangers is, as you expect, unable to offer meaningful competition, we’ll see a short term increase in attendance/season tickets, then a return to current levels as the curiosity and bigotry value diminishes.

New Rangers, caught in a perpetual ‘Hampden season’, fighting it out with Aberdeen, Dundee Utd and others for the Europa League places (with the odd bottom 6 season), does little, if anything, to alter Celtic’s current business model. Maybe the equivalent of selling a Kelvin Wilson.

We’ll sell a few more season tickets in the first season or two, sell out the ground for the first couple of Old Squirm games, then revert to where we are now.

Meantime, New Rangers will diminish year on year, as the pockets of the investors and the appetite of the fans expire to a point where equilibrium is reached – the cost base meets the income.

For the foreseeable future, Celtic’s competition is found amongst those Champion clubs from similarly ranked nations who fight it out in the Champions Route for qualification to the group stage of the Champions League.

So… yes, short term there’s some benefit. Medium term, no change.

  28. The Battered Bunnet on

    By the way…

“No change” means a slow diminishing of Celtic. This won’t change until the football environment changes radically.

When/if that occurs, all bets are off.

In the current environment, there’s no place for a second ‘big’ team. The economy of Scottish Football’s current circumstances simply isn’t big enough to sustain two ‘big’ clubs.

  29. The Battered Bunnet:

Would you bet your house on Rangers not getting investment?

    I wouldn’t.

I think they’ll be back, and I think Ashley will get his money back and save face and leave. Ashley is not a mug nor will he welcome the grief.

I don’t have any proof of that but that is what I think. If I was in office at Celtic I would prepare for the worst case rather than hope for the best case.
