Guidetti, life without the death-wish opponent

845

I see the story that Feyenoord are chasing John Guidetti has lasted more days than I expected.  John Guidetti is a likeable guy and seems to have enjoyed his time at Celtic, but he desperately needs to show some form before the end of the season if he is to attract the attention of Feyenoord or any team of that calibre.

One aspect often overlooked about Guidetti is his inexperience.  The player is still only 22 and had started only 30 games before arriving at Celtic Park last season, there’s a good chance that by the end of the season he will have played more games for Celtic than anyone else.  On paper, a season at Celtic was a chance to sort his career out, grab first team football at a prestigious club who were short of a centre forward.  Conversely, being kept out of the team by Leigh Griffiths will damage his reputation.

Barcabhoy sent me an interesting summary of Celtic’s material loss since the liquidation of Rangers.  The figures below compare the three years before Rangers liquidation with the two and a half years since.

As you see, even though we are comparing a shorter time period after liquidation, Celtic’s turnover and profitability is still miles better than when we had to compete with Rangers.

This should end any nonsense about Celtic needing or in any way missing Rangers.  We lost some revenue streams: domestic commercial and ticket income, but the slipstream to European revenues have more than made up for the gap.  More importantly, we are also no longer caught in an arms race with a death-risk opponent, allowing us to bring costs below income and plan longer than the current season.

We have to concede 11 in last seven games if we are to lose more goals than last season.

That point about being able to plan over a longer term than one season is a very important one which needs adjusting to in terms of judgement of progress.

There are always going to be the off days like ICT or St Johnstone but over the long term, be that a season or five, domestically the improvement graph should always be showing an upward trend.

I think we can do it – move to a 3 man defence, play 2 upfront and bingo! we’ll have The Sieve back. We can leak goals no problem and achieve our aim!

  4. With regard to Europe that depends on continuity, which again long term planning can help so that players reaching contract end can be moved on without serious consequences on results and performance mid season rather than the end.

Same goes for a manager, although if Celtic can meet the development aspirations of a manager whose love of the game and making players better, is as strong as any wish for recognition as a cheque book manager, then hopefully continuity in that area is a worry for the long long long term.

Indeed they do and are on an upward trend too.

I’d always want Celtic to be relatively stronger but the improvement at other clubs is what provides a stronger competitive element.

Just taking a break, and getting caught up. Not having a dig at you, but, the article from which I quoted contained several sentences attributed to PL, which come immediately before the passage to which you refer. Those sentences are:

“That is hugely difficult in the present environment.

“The lost money which Rangers, and now Hearts and Hibs, have taken out of the game, has been made up from profit from selling players. Our revenues have stayed the same from selling players to make up for those lost millions.”

Now … unless the DR simply made up these quotes (which, I admit is possible, but I have never seen anything from PL denying these statements, which I would have expected had the DR, in fact made up the statements), this does suggest a loss of $10 million over two seasons, which loss has been covered by the sale of players.

For me, the most important part is the portion of PL’s statement, which even you quoted ‘ quotedstatement that “

I don’t expect John Guidetti to be playing for Celtic next season.

Guidetti’s contribution this season should never be underestimated though – he delivered most of his goals at a time when many of our less patient fans were getting up a full-head of steam over sacking Ronny Deila.

Those goals were vital in keeping Celtic involved in four competitions beyond Christmas.

Good luck to Guidetti wherever he goes. He certainly did his bit for Celtic.

As long as we win the league over the season I’m happy, over the course of the season if we get beat, as a rule, I’m happy for the team that beats us because for them it is a wee joy that we so often take for granted.

However, like every rule there is an exemption and there is one team I’ll never be happy for.

I agree. I think he could do a job for us if he stays, but, if he gets a more lucrative offer, then I will say thanks for his contribution (which, as you point out, was timely) and wish him well in the future.

Kitalba…. I agree that, in the long run, it is bad if we win every league and every trophy … so, a period of challenge from aberdeen or DU is not necessarily a bad thing… but I agree my ‘reasonableness’ does not extend to one team…. hope we never have to see them again. No money in the world (if they do, in fact, bring more) is worth it.

” That is the scale of the damage David Murray has done to Rangers “.

Indeed – an egomaniac spiv who was deemed to be way too ‘ iffy ‘ for a skint and desperate Ayr United..

I know a Rangers supporter who was predicting disaster within weeks of Murray being given the keys..Voodoo economics, cupidity, avarice and bullshit all wrapped up in a Geez yer money appeal to the dumb ass peepul..Add a media that was incapable of recognizing the truth , never mind reporting it and it was always just a matter of time.

    ———————————————————————————————————–

hi mate, not only were supporters of the now dead club shouting about Murray and his lack of real cash.Directors*were also.2 checked him out with a full credit check on his(up to 1988)shenanigans.’paper financer”profit built on paper”Delboy in a suit’.a director of 56 companies only one of which was in profit. The one he used to purchase deid team(irony-deidbank finances deidklub)He was a bonafide spiv from day one!!

Recalling back to then, the meeja had a dummy run of ‘entitlement press’ with the return of Sourness and the financial’reawakening of a giant’ that was performed by David Holmes on Lawrence Marlboroughs behalf.But. our centenary double abruptly halted ‘the peepul’ settling into the type of ‘lambing’ that took place in recent years.

Deidclub were nowhere in the 80’s,they only equalled there rekord low attendences this year ironically against Cowdenbeath too). They had been in the kack since 1978.D.Utd,A’deen and Celtic all vied for league and cups leaving the league cup as a consolation, but once Murray started to entice Thern,Stevens,Steven,Hateley(allgedly on some sort of ‘offshore contract’) the meeja were fully lambed and the entitlement ecxuding meant contrasting Fergus McCann with Saddam Hussein passed laughingly as banter.in their squinted eyes.

Murray was also a Tory headlight,a fine example of the ‘i done it myself’championing free market policies and a friend of Michael Forsyth as well as the Conservative and Unionist party.Little did we know then he done fook ahll himself his ‘paper companies’were a myriad of debt financed companies at various different stages of ‘tick’

    We know now.

And in my opinion everything under his reign is questionable.and will be always

No worries, I didn’t deliberately leave out those quotes as I found them from a different website, not the Daily Record, and they only used the ones I provided.

Down doesn’t necessarily mean relegated but I take your point. He did however say later on that they went bust, which was true.

I don’t dispute that we lost some money due to Rangers demise but the figure of £10m that was bandied about was taken out of context as far as I can tell.

If we don’t and an Aberdeen or a Hibs or a Dundee United were to win it I’d be happy for them their day in the sun, but I do want to win the league as often as we can.

The cups, I personally would play up to the semi-final and then if I got there I’d throw it.

I think JG will only be at Celtic if he cannot find another club that will pay him more than we are able to. I agree with you that he made a contribution (see Mort’s stats earlier) – at least as much as Leigh and Anto. I think part of the problem is that there was great expectation that he would be a bit of a goal machine. We are used to seeing forwards that are able to score plenty goals against SPL opposition.

Never mind. How is Alfie Finbogasson doing? I recall that Peter Lawwell was given pelters for not forking out a few million for him?

Season Ticket renewed. I am hoping the improvement continues. I am confident it will because I think only Jason Denayer of the important players will be leaving. If that is the case, I think Charlie Mulgrew has what it takes to be an excellent partner to Virgil van Djik.

    A defence of :

    Gordon

Lustig Mulgrew van Djik Izaguirre would be very solid.

    A midfield of

    ………..Brown

Bitton Johansen Armstrong flanked by either GMS or Forrest would ensure SPFL opposition would spend most of their time chasing thereby making the job of defence even more comfortable.

I don`t think referees will be a problem but pitches might.

Anyway, it was only buying my ST which made me think of next year! We still have this season to complete and I am looking forward to tomorrow`s game. I know some posters are not happy with some aspects of Celtic but I am finding Home games most enjoyable to watch. We are running out of fixtures to give some team the hiding I have been confidently expecting!
