Guidetti the exceptional talent

1003

We’ve had a few free kick experts in modern times.  Lubo was first.  He could hit them, and score with them, with either foot.  The man was a menace to opponents on many levels.  He also taught us that hitting the ball as hard as possible into an opponent’s body, standard fare for Celtic in the 80s and early 90s, was a poor return from a dead ball situation.

Lubo clearly influenced Shaun but it wasn’t until Naka arrived that Shaun really found his grove.  With right footed Maloney and left footed Nakamura lining up behind the ball keepers were forced to leave a vulnerable space at any centrally-located free kick.

I don’t remember any player scoring with three consecutive free kicks, an absolutely exceptional feat.  John Guidetti is proving to be an exceptional player.  From what I hear he’s also enjoying being a Celtic player, there’s been a meeting of minds on what is expected and what’s on offer.

This is a young player who has already learned a few lessons on football clubs and career management.  He has the makings of a Celtic legend.

Those of you who weren’t there last night, make sure you see the goals.  Four of them were exceptional.

Many thanks to everyone who has big on our auction for two debenture seats for the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Celtic sponsor, Magners.  Funds raised go towards building our forth kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi, specifically for the 909 children who attend Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which currently doesn’t have a kitchen.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, but………  things are improving.  93% of your money raised is getting to the projects on the ground, Mary’s Meals are now feeding hundreds of thousands of kids there each day, over 2000 of them in kitchens CQN readers have already built.

Kids who are fed at school there are able to attend instead of having to work for food – primary school attendance is up 30% after Mary’s Meals build a kitchen.  As a result they all get a basic education, some of them are set on a road to a higher education and all have better chances in life.

The auction closes tomorrow. You will do nothing better today than get involved with this one, which you can do here.

Lubo was the first free kick taker?

no chance, before him there was John Collins and also Big Pierre.

And when they were on the same pitch the keepers didnt know if it was going left or right

One of the best Celtic sides around they won hee haw!

6-0 is a good result against anyone by the way

Has RD realised what a Celtic line up should look like and has the penny dropped that not every Celtic Manager before him was a dummy who knew nothing?

    Good Afternoon Folks.

Great result from last night and a great performance from JG we must move to secure his services on a permanent basis.

As I said last night, I was really pleased with everything Celtic yesterday.

Not only did we play 4-4-2 and delivered a performance, but the club itself played a blinder in its communication of the support for the GB foodbank campaign, the support for the Trussell Trust and the important donation made by the charity foundation.

That is the Celtic I know and love.

The charity foundation is also giving support to the Invisibles Charity which helps the homeless. This charity was started by a long term friend of mine and last year the club as opposed to the foundation made a terrific donation of surplus stock from the shops including a number of the great big winter training coats that Sammy used to be seen in.

There will be further drives for the invisibles in future and the good news is that they do not accept cash donations so no looking for money.

On Saturday there will be two very special guests at Celtic park and hopefully I can say more about that on the blog later today. However watch this space because there is a very real CQN connection to what is planned for Saturday.

The book is in the course of printing and should be with us in early November and thereafter we have to get the copies signed by Billy and Davie before being dispatched.

There are other great bargains to be had on the bookstore site including signed copies of Archie McPherson’s biography of Jock Stein which was recently updated, plus various other Celtic books.

I remember JC scoring identical free kicks against them at mordor, one of which we were denied the right to attend. When you look back at them you would swear it was the same goal being replayed. He and the Maestro kept us going through a very grim time and its always gutted me that he only ended up with one Cup winners medal for us, he deserved to be in a much better, more successful Celtic team. Dont care what anyone has to say about his role at CP just now, he definitely gave us something to keep us going in the nineties

  6. My friends in Celtic,

Delighted with the result and the fact it now looks as if we are making progress. Maybe we shall see if indeed if we can shell out up to £6m on the right player.

  7. Don’t mean to hijack the blog or in any way detract from the wonderful work done by Mary’s Meals but thought while we were on the subject of charitable works in Malawi I would bring to your attention the charity set up by my sister and brother in law:

They recently returned from a 3 week visit to Malawi offering dental care to people who would otherwise have no access to it. Any of you who have had a toothache in the past will know how unbearable the pain can be and how debilitating it is.

If you search for Smileawi on Facebook you can also see some wonderful pictures from their recent trip.

  8. The Battered Bunnet:

Were you present at all the meetings between Celtic, JAG, the Scottish Government, the police? I don’t have the documents with me but I got access to them very easily. Have Celtic ever – categorically and unequivocally – denied having being party to the conception of FOCUS and the Bill?

Truth is a prerequisite to forgiveness, which in turn is a prerequisite to reconciliation. Until the truth is made known by – all – party to the passing of the Bill (and the unbelievable acceptance of the ‘five-way-agreement’)… there’ll always be unaligned individuals who harbour mistrust, disrespect, disdain, and who consequently grieve the divisions. Whether the divisions are drawn and barricaded along moral or populist lines is academic; they are real and barbed nonetheless.

You both kill the Bill and own up – and explain – to participation in the ‘five-way-agreement’ or there’ll be dragons. (not that I’m saying Celtic participated in the five way agreement, nor implying either, so nobody needs to go all ‘mentalist’ and publish what I’m infering)

I’ll e-mail you some stuff if you want, when I get back to my own place.

  9. 1st post Bhoys, long time lurker; I would have posted earlier but it took me sooooo long to figure out the answer to the sum when you first register. Nice atmosphere on here the last while amazing what scoring goals and winning games means to all of us, hail, hail! …….no I’m not a hun

  11. The Battered Bunnet on

You know, there’s a fair amount of stuff to criticise the club for, from a ropey recruitment strategy, to abject supporter engagement, to the wages dichotomy and more besides.

There really isn’t any need to deploy imagine and conjecture to find something to criticise.

PL said we lose 10 million pound a season without the zombies if they come back next season and the price of season books go up. There is nothing to stop us putting a very good contract down for JG. 5 year deal then sell him after 4 recoup the money. This chief executive stuff is easy.

  19. The reason Stokes was on the left was RD was saying he had built up a relationship with Izzy.He likes his players playing in combinations. We can all have our own opinions, but the room, and space that Izzy gets at the moment, could be down to this. From what I saw last night,Stokes did ok,Izzy was tremendous. All wee things RD is working on.

Tidy win last night. Is a 6 goal victory becomes the new “regulation 5-0″?

Lots of bollox on the OBAFTC Act, and Celtic’s part in it.

For those who wish to know, Celtic’s position has been articulated formally twice, once at committee stage, and once earlier this year. On both occasions they have been unambiguously against it.

For those who don’t wish to know, can’t be arsed looking, or more generally, want to present the club in a poor light, you can always make up some sh!te.

    —————————

Whether they were for or against it, what a lot of us would like to know is how much info do the club give the police on our fans which assist the police on arresting our fans under the act

The club should come out and tell us, in general terms, the type of information they have given the police, and more importantly, what parts of that information are they legally obliged to give the police, and what parts they give just to give them a helping hand

If the club come out and state unequivocally that they do not provide name/address/season ticket information on our fans, unless the police provide a legal request that the club must act upon then i would be a whole lot happier

However, i suspect very much that this isnt the case, and the club are very much complicit in helping FOCUS by giving them such information that they arent legally forced to give them

  27. Right here goes, controversial slant.

I have a slight concern about Guidette’s cocky attitude.

Don’t get me wrong, often that is what makes a talented player what he is but my fears are based on the adulation suspected showered on some players by our support.

M’lud I give you Di Canio, Vam Hoojidonk, Cadette, Viduka to name but a few. The ones that thrived on the fan adulation whilst at Celtic. How were said fans thanked?

By taking the praise to their heads and ‘walking away’ from them at the first sniff of a move.

Look back and see how long each of these players lasted at Celtic, you may be surprised by the combined total of games.

Granted, young Guidette is only starting out; it’s early days. He is not even a permanent member of staff (yet I think he scrapes over the living wage barrier).

However, it can be seen from past experience that Celtic players with swagger don’t hang around for long.

God, I am getting old and grumpy!

    Apologies for the dampener.

  29. Celtic Supporters Forum and Dialogue

    Forum

There is a Supporters Forum scheduled for Monday evening where CQN have been represented in the past. Paul will be in attendance possibly with A.N Other.

I’m in sunnier climes but can take any questions you guys might wish to ask. Group them and send them to the SLO for answers.

It will help me identify your posts if you put Supporters Forum as the heading.

    Dialogue

Long term posters will know that I have been pushing on CQN for quite some time the need for improved communications between the club and the support. The Supporters Forum is a welcome move in that direction but it has its weaknesses.

In relation to that The Celtic Trust placed the following resolution on the AGM agenda having attempted in the past to make improvements in dialogue between The Board and Supporters.

RESOLUTION 11: Supporter Liaison Officer and Supporters’ Forum

“The establishment of the post of Supporters Liaison Officer and the Supporters Forum have been widely welcomed by the organisations representing

the Celtic support. They provide, in their different ways, important communication channels between the club and supporters.

However in order that the best possible outcomes can be obtained for both club and supporters it is appropriate that the operation of the post of SLO

and of the Supporters Forum be the subject of proper objective scrutiny by representatives of all who have reason to interact with the club through

    the SLO or Forum.

Accordingly there should be short life working groups set up to look at the SLO post and separately the Supporters Forum to ensure that the way in

which they are working are in accordance with UEFA rules in respect of the SLO post and provide open and transparent discussion and resolution of

issues of interest and concern to both Celtic and Celtic supporters.

We ask you to support this resolution and the written statement above circulated to shareholders in advance of the meeting, in the interests of a

    stronger Celtic.”

The Board Response is as follows

Board Response to Res 11 2014

” Effective communication and engagement with all supporters is a matter of great importance for the Company. The Board agrees that the post of

Supporter Liaison Officer and the Supporters’ Forum have improved communication and have been welcomed by the Celtic support. The Board

wishes to ensure that these important channels of communication best serve the interests of Celtic supporters and, therefore, the Company.

The Board therefore welcomes the proposals for continuing dialogue from the shareholders who requisitioned the resolution and is pleased to

confirm that a review of the role of the Supporter Liaison Officer and the Supporters’ Forum has been put in hand. The review will involve a wide

range of supporters, supporter organisations, partners, colleagues and shareholders.

The conclusions of the review, and the views expressed in the course of these discussions, will be carefully considered. Given the substantial legal and

regulatory issues and responsibilities involved, decisions on how to act upon them must rest ultimately with the Board rather than with any informal

working-group. For these reasons, the Board does not consider that a vote is required to approve such a resolution given that the review, which is the

focus of the resolution, is already underway and the Board intends to give an update as to the progress of the review at the AGM. Given, however,

that the resolution has been proposed, the Board will ask shareholders to vote against it while retaining the commitment to take the process of

review forward on the basis described in this response.”

What this means to me is that whilst Celtic are formally voting against the resolution itself as framed, they do however recognise the need to address the issue of improved dialogue and are taking active steps to review arrangements involving all stakeholders.

I think this is a good result for the CST and Celtic and the views of CQN posters on how to improve communication matters will be part of what is fed into that review process as it develops.
