We’ve had a few free kick experts in modern times. Lubo was first. He could hit them, and score with them, with either foot. The man was a menace to opponents on many levels. He also taught us that hitting the ball as hard as possible into an opponent’s body, standard fare for Celtic in the 80s and early 90s, was a poor return from a dead ball situation.
Lubo clearly influenced Shaun but it wasn’t until Naka arrived that Shaun really found his grove. With right footed Maloney and left footed Nakamura lining up behind the ball keepers were forced to leave a vulnerable space at any centrally-located free kick.
I don’t remember any player scoring with three consecutive free kicks, an absolutely exceptional feat. John Guidetti is proving to be an exceptional player. From what I hear he’s also enjoying being a Celtic player, there’s been a meeting of minds on what is expected and what’s on offer.
This is a young player who has already learned a few lessons on football clubs and career management. He has the makings of a Celtic legend.
Those of you who weren’t there last night, make sure you see the goals. Four of them were exceptional.
Many thanks to everyone who has big on our auction for two debenture seats for the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Celtic sponsor, Magners. Funds raised go towards building our forth kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi, specifically for the 909 children who attend Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which currently doesn’t have a kitchen.
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, but……… things are improving. 93% of your money raised is getting to the projects on the ground, Mary’s Meals are now feeding hundreds of thousands of kids there each day, over 2000 of them in kitchens CQN readers have already built.
Kids who are fed at school there are able to attend instead of having to work for food – primary school attendance is up 30% after Mary’s Meals build a kitchen. As a result they all get a basic education, some of them are set on a road to a higher education and all have better chances in life.
The auction closes tomorrow. You will do nothing better today than get involved with this one, which you can do here.

Quick Poll. What do we want more Guidetti or Living Wage for all of our Employees?
Lawell is listening…
Gudetti… Then take the money from increased ticket and shirt sales to implement the living wage….
Obviously that should be Ronnie
The SECRET 5-way agreement was signed by Regan and Doncaster.I assume they did not sign it as individuals but as officials of the clubs they represent from the S.F.A. and S.F.P.L.Were they authorised to do this by these clubs? If so why is it secret? The time has come for our club to come clean on this matter and inform their shareholders and fans where they stand on this important matter. The A.G.M. would be an ideal opportunity for them to do this. The natives are getting restless!
Del Piero … aye and IL Divin Codino was no bad either
Regarding toasted or roasted.
If the bread and cheese is placed under the grill, surely it should be
Grilled cheese on toast.
Sorry to any offended toasties or roasties out there.
Tommy Gemmell free kick against Benfica – Bang!
Others not mentioned so far:
Ronnie Glavin hit a mean dead ball and certainly slotted penalties away low and hard.
Willie Wallace against Ducla in the first leg of the semi final.
However the one I got the most joy out of in recent years was Naka against Man Utd as I told my son ” stand up cause this is a goal!”.
Also the tim commentator who did the spoof of Naka saying ” The Big lanky Dutch C**t couldn’t get near it!” brought a smile to my face.
It is important not to confuse the OBAF Act and the establishment of FOCUS. Celtic PLC were very clear in their view that a special football policing service was a good idea and were early on keen to support the idea of dealing with offensive behaviour.
The problem of course was that the vision Celtic had for a special policing operation was not the one Mr House had. They were in fact talking about very different entities whilst thinking they were on the same track. You might call it politically niave.
That’s as much leeway as I would allow the PLC in this.
Having had the experience of FOCUS, the enforcer of the OBAF Act, the Board came to the conclusion that this was not the ideas they had had in mind and made some statements more recently in line with it not working properly.
However, it would be fair to conclude that in that gestation period and initial implementation both FOCUS and the OBAF Act had the tacit and operational support of the PLC. This is evidenced by the experiences of Celtic supporters on the wrong end of both these ventures.
The key result of this has been the harrassment and arrest of members of the Green Brigade and a few sundry others, presumably under the banner of ‘regularly most offensive’ in the stadium or environs or travel routes…. or houses et al.
I would in fact support this if the Green Brigade were a bunch of violent fighters, were abusive to others in the stadium, were a danger to other supporters or enablers of other difficult process. By any measure they are a bunch of semi-organised daft weans who like to sing about and support Celtic. Unsurprisngly their songbook contains songs (mainly written by others) that sometimes involve Ireland, Republicanism and struggle. I say unsurprisingly because that is the cultural background cloth of many.
I suspect that the OBAF Act would have been markedly different without FOCUS as the implementer. The fact that Strathclyde Police had lost budget for a bunch of intelligence (I use that phrase loosely) officers previously funded by london is of course entirely co-incidental.
The PLC though do need to accept that they have played a role in the crreation of both FOCUS and the OBAF Act even though they may now regret that.

Davie Provan v Dundee Utd 1985 SCF
Brilliant
Guidetti or the living wage for Celtic should never be an either or it should be both. If we are as big a club as we think we are it is a no brainer come on the S.S.M. get it sorted out. H.H.
Just watched Guidetti’s free kicks again, (and again), there’s power, swerve and dip on all 3.
Amazing!! He’s up there with Naka and Ronaldinho!
Are those reporting on Celtic’s living wage issues, paying it to their staff?

I am not sure the Celtic have the proper tools to deal with the Police Force in any capacity.
Just my opinion of course and based on just a little knowledge and personal experience.
Could be entirely wrong.
Free kicks.?
Sinisa Mihajlovic was the man .

Murdo wasn’t too bad at stopping free kicks with his coupon as I recall against Brazil. Never seen anyone hit as hard as that. Ouch…felt sorry for him…he was bewildered after that.
Best ever, Nakamura at home to Manchester United.
Guidetti’s kicks are ok, but will he score from open play?
If rangers international are (as someone posted sometime ago).
Not officially in liquidation, but going through liquidation.
Should they not be getting a points penalty for every season that they don’t come out
Of liquidation. Or am I getting mixed up with administration ?
Forgot.about big Andy…brilliant.
Or one against Scotland for Peru.
Ziggy,
Murdo had a coupon made for stopping free kicks.
proudbhoy
Denis Irwin is a great shout. One of the best Man Utd players of all time.
Lots of time Celtic target and Leeds legend Ian Harte could skelp them as well.

Okay. Let’s say you need to maintain a healthy working relationship with the Police for a variety of reasons. Not least of which is their influence on your ability to actually stage matches. Do you a) absolutely stick to the letter of these rules and force them to get a court order for every request or b) take the pragmatic view that the requests are justified and hand over the details?
I would definitely pick b) but only on the provision that there are periodic reviews of the arrangement and that requests were actually resulting in convictions. Any suggestion that the process is being abused and route a) is enforced.
How many milliseconds would it take a story to appear in the press suggesting we weren’t helping police crackdown on sectarianism if we didn’t comply with requests? There’s an aspect of maintaining sponsor relations in this as well.
not posted for a while…gave Ronnie some tests.
He is not out of the woods yet BUT…
1. No longer playing 2 in midfield??
2. Playing 2 up front in Scotland
… the only negative is the last Astra display.
Lets blooter these idiots and then I am a happy clappy and might start to believe.
If we can get european football after christmas with guidetti we may have a chance.
By the way… guidetti may be worth 40,000 per week as he may be the man to get bums back on seats
Free kicks is it.
I give you the rangers football team.
They seem to get lots especially against celtic players they kick with impunity.
I’ll give you John Grieg the one he did on bobby Lennox.
Dirty Hun baz&@&@.
Dont know if anybody remembers Andy Ritchie’s free kick against us at Cappielow late 70’s early 80’s.
Just outside the box, wall lined up. Everybody expected the cannonball. He stood over the ball, squatted then stood back up and chipped it over the wall, under the bar. Absolute cracker.
Lubo’s free kick against the flying pig in a must win game against Motherwell at Celtic Park was one of the best I have seen.
LB
Ronnie Glavin used to fire his free kicks into the net, so the say por cierto
Livid hoy.
Forgot about that old chestnut .
When it suits right enough.
Does a corner count as a free kick?
We need to get Guidetti on the corners.
Apparently it took about 60 mins before we had our first corner last night. Incredible stuff for a game we dominated.
LB
Free kicks – come on guys.
Roberto Carlos v France 1997
Por Cierto
I got that one!
You naughty bhoy!
Talking of Ronnie Glavin, he was a favourite of mine as a kid, my best mate knew this, so one day he tells me Celtic are going to sign a German midfielder , brilliant thinks me , but before I could let it sink in he tells me his name is Marcus Schopp and that our midfield will be , Glavin Burns Schopp.
Never forgave him for it.
