Guidetti the exceptional talent

1003

We’ve had a few free kick experts in modern times.  Lubo was first.  He could hit them, and score with them, with either foot.  The man was a menace to opponents on many levels.  He also taught us that hitting the ball as hard as possible into an opponent’s body, standard fare for Celtic in the 80s and early 90s, was a poor return from a dead ball situation.

Lubo clearly influenced Shaun but it wasn’t until Naka arrived that Shaun really found his grove.  With right footed Maloney and left footed Nakamura lining up behind the ball keepers were forced to leave a vulnerable space at any centrally-located free kick.

I don’t remember any player scoring with three consecutive free kicks, an absolutely exceptional feat.  John Guidetti is proving to be an exceptional player.  From what I hear he’s also enjoying being a Celtic player, there’s been a meeting of minds on what is expected and what’s on offer.

This is a young player who has already learned a few lessons on football clubs and career management.  He has the makings of a Celtic legend.

Those of you who weren’t there last night, make sure you see the goals.  Four of them were exceptional.

Many thanks to everyone who has big on our auction for two debenture seats for the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Celtic sponsor, Magners.  Funds raised go towards building our forth kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi, specifically for the 909 children who attend Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which currently doesn’t have a kitchen.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, but………  things are improving.  93% of your money raised is getting to the projects on the ground, Mary’s Meals are now feeding hundreds of thousands of kids there each day, over 2000 of them in kitchens CQN readers have already built.

Kids who are fed at school there are able to attend instead of having to work for food – primary school attendance is up 30% after Mary’s Meals build a kitchen.  As a result they all get a basic education, some of them are set on a road to a higher education and all have better chances in life.

The auction closes tomorrow. You will do nothing better today than get involved with this one, which you can do here.

You post raises some interesting linguistic and philosophical issues.

Grilling is defined as ‘broiling on a grid iron’.

Broling is ‘cooking by exposure to direct, intense radiant heat’

Toasting is ”cooking or browning by exposure to a grill, fire or other source of radiant heat’.

Roasting is sometimes used as a synonym for broiling or grilling. However, as someone who is doing my chef’s program, I would say that roasting normally refers to long slow cooking at a lower temperature (that the above).

So, I would say roasting and toasting are both probably okay.

However, your question does not end there.

But what if the bread is not toasted before it is covered with cheese and grilled? Then only the corners get grilled? Is that toast?

There is a story about young prince Arjuna ( a friend of Lord Krishna in the BhagavadGhita) …..Arjuna has a chariot. If you take a wheel off the chariot, it is still a chariot. What if you take 2 wheels off? Then the side boards. Followed by the floor boards. At some point, you just have a pile of parts. At what point does the chariot cease to be a chariot and become a pile of parts?

Following that line of thought… How much of the bread must be toasted before the bread BECOMES toast?

Does the bread have to be toasted for it to be grilled cheese? Or is is sufficient for the cheese to be toasted (even if the bread may not be).

  5. I don’t know what “modern era” means in the headline (post-Kelly, perhaps?) but I’d certainly include John Collins in any list of free-kick specialists. He could strike a dead ball just about as well as anyone I’ve seen. As someone else said earlier, JC, along with the Maestro, kept the flame of hope alive during a pretty dark period.

Was at that game. Cappielow for some reason was an away ground I always enjoyed visiting.

  8. My favourite free kick was Naka against Man Ure, after about a minute of roaring turned to address a stranger in the seat behind who had addressed a few words to me a little while earlier, will never forget his face. He had gone demented and was still roaring. I was afraid to turn around a little while later when The Holy Goalie saved the spot kick, There may be technically better goals from frees but there will never be a better one for me.

  9. Livibhoy,

Lol. You coulda been there. There was a ticket and seat in car with your name on it :)

John Collins got a tremendous amount of bend on the ball with his free kicks. He put that down partly due to a fancy pair of boots which could put sidespin on the ball.

Boots can only do so much or I would have been a Celtic player in my predators.

And check out Peter Lawwell’s attendance at JAG meetings:

    15 March 11 – present

    22 June 11 – absent – OBF discussed

11 July 11 – signed off JAG report including recommendations on OBF

    12 Sept 11 – absent – OBF discussed

    6 Dec 11 – absent – OBF discussed

It seems to me that Celtic did take part in the JAG which gave the OBF a football based legitimacy. It is impossible to find out what input they actually had with JAG and what they did within the 2 workstreams.

Too late in the day they submitted their view that existing legislation should be used rather than a separate football centred offense.

So who is right? Did Celtic support the introduction of the OBF or not?

    In effect they did both.

They took part in the JAG where the OBF was discussed over a number of months, and put there name to a report that recommends that ” …. before the start of the 2011/12 season:

(the) Introduction of the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Bill.”

Celtic also submitted a written view that the proposed legislation was not required:

“In the specific context of football we consider that the existing legal framework, with

the more consistent and comprehensive approach to football banning orders and the

new Football Policing Unit proposed by the Joint Action Group should first be applied

and the effectiveness of those measures then reviewed before additional legislation

    is considered.”

It would be nice to see the JAG and Workstream minutes, but that isn’t going to happen. That would be too much like transparency.

What is the point of getting in a lather whether we see John Guidetti in the Hoops next season? We will, or we won’t. One of market force (read possible modern day greedy bassa), or a genuine old fashioned loyalty to connect with the Club and fans will prevail.

I for one just intend to enjoy his time at Paradise for now, not only for his outstanding ability, but his presence, personality and instinct for connecting with the fans. Walking out to the Green Brigade with Izzy and throwing his (hat trick) jersey into the kids in 111 is a sublime gesture by any standards. He has, apparently been doing his homework on who are integral the Club.

As far as our opponents in the next round, anyone but the slavering bigot toilet wreckers. I still hold onto a tiny belief that they will further implode, ensuring their poisonous bile never echoes around Paradise ever again.

A big disappointment of late is how one of my all time favourites, the evil genius, has been using his links to the club to earn the bigot shilling. I’m happy to say over the last few games, he is starting to look a little foolish.

  15. BRTH,

My personal free kick after Naka’s against Man U is TG’s against Benfica. What a rocket. Mind you, Lubo’s against Motherwell was brilliant. Yer bhoy, Guidetti, might be the best of all. What power he can put in to a shot.

  16. I think Celtic should set up another remuneration committee to look into

    The living wage

This renumeration committee could look into the economic dynamic between our club and said employee

    The remuneration committee look at

all aspects of tax, ni,credits enabling a bespoke tailoring(hourly rate) ensuring no poverty trap for Celtics lowest paid.

Guidetti and the living wage for me.

Tidy win last night. Is a 6 goal victory becomes the new “regulation 5-0″?

Lots of bollox on the OBAFTC Act, and Celtic’s part in it.

For those who wish to know, Celtic’s position has been articulated formally twice, once at committee stage, and once earlier this year. On both occasions they have been unambiguously against it.

For those who don’t wish to know, can’t be arsed looking, or more generally, want to present the club in a poor light, you can always make up some sh!te.

    ———————————–

It’s unusual for you to be so aggressively dismissive my friend.

Celtic only went about formally articulating their views once they realised the monster which they had helped to create.

The following is taken from the JAG meeting on Tuesday 6thh December, which Celtic were present at.

“The Joint Action Group on football has met for the final time this year and has given a commitment that further work will continue throughout 2012, as it published a report on the progress which has been made to deliver upon wide-ranging recommendations to improve the game.

The meeting in Glasgow was hosted by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill and involved partners from Strathclyde Police, the Scottish Football Association (SFA), the Scottish Premier League (SPL), the Scottish Football League (SFL), Celtic Football Club and Rangers Football Club.

Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs Roseanna Cunningham and Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport Shona Robison were also in attendance.

The Joint Action Group said that ‘welcome progress’ had been made so far to drive forward work to deliver upon the eight commitments agreed at the recent summit, and announced that further work will continue throughout 2012.”

The ‘eight commitments’ included the establishment of FOCUS and the OB Act. There is nothing to suggest that Celtic in any way opposed any of the eight commitments. Our ‘formal articulation’ only came about after 3,000 Celtic supporters had converged on George Square to voice their opposition to the Bill, scores of Anti Bill banners were displayed around Celtic Park and several members of the Celtic support had been arrested under the new legislation.

I’m not being critical of the club out of malice, indeed I praised those in charge at Celtic on this very blog only last night for publicly supporting the GB food drive initiative this Satrurday.

I believe that Celtic were there at the inception of both FOCUS and the OB Act, we certainly know that they were represented. I don’t believe that they could have predicted how both of these would have manifested themselves and I remain to be convinced that they were fully aware of how they would have impacted on the Celtic support specifically.

So now that Celtic is improving with every game and scoring goals for fun would we like to thrash Sevco in the semis to give Sally a great send off before Ashley bins him?

  19. Living_in_the_Love_of_the_Commons_People on

You could argue that if the board got the cheque book out for John Guidetti, his talent and personality would bring x-amount fans back to games that would more than pay his way and cover the extra expense of the living wage.

Get it done Please Mr. Bankier and Mr. Lawwell.
