Halloween in July

461

At the end of last month, looking ahead to the Miydjitlland tie, I predicted, “a Halloween movie awaits”.  Home and away, Miydjitlland created few chances until late in normal time, when Celtic tired.  They were unable to sustain periods of pressure and will surely not lay a glove on PSV Eindhoven in the next round.  Still, we endure Halloween in July.

The young and inexperienced defenders performed well, this one was not on them.  As did Scott Bain, whose confidence to drop the shoulder before playing a 30-yard forward pass, created our best chance of the game.  He also made two fine saves, which makes me wonder what could have been had we never embarked on our Greek Odyssey.

Callum McGregor’s goal was sublime; he placed rather than blasted his shot, one of the few occasions we tested a keeper who never convinced.  Anthony Ralston reminded us why we had such high hopes for him a few years back, while Stephen Welsh and Dane Murray outperformed expectations.

James Forrest should have put the tie beyond the Danes shortly after coming on but poked his shot wide.  Within seconds, Miydjitlland were level.

Like Celtic, Miydjitlland were short of reinforcements, but started extra time with four substitutes on the field, including an 18-year-old debutant, Victor Lind.  The teenager repeatedly mishit the ball whenever he got near it, but he and the other subs managed to provide what proved to be crucial energy.  Celtic made only the one change, Forrest for Liel Abada, until after they went a goal down in the 94th minute.  When energy sapped from ever-busy Ryan Christie and David Turnbull, the writing was on the wall.

Even though Celtic closed the game unable to pass out of their half, Ange Postecoglou stuck to his game plan.  Teams on their way out of a cup invariably go Route One in the final minutes, not so this time.

I am sure none of us had Champions League expectations; we are not at PSV Eindhoven level, but Europa League group stage qualification is crucial for financial, competitive, coefficient and recruitment reasons.  That would have been achieved with a win last night.  Two qualification rounds now have to be negotiated, you have more fraught evenings ahead.

I remain hopeful the squad we have on 1 September will be significantly better that that available last night.  Whether that will be sufficient to take the Champions League bounty available to this season’s Premiership winners is another story.

EKBHOY, that’s not very nice, suggesting trafficking some of those less-than-bright Celtic supporters and season-ticket holders, or ‘mugs’ as they are sometimes referred to by the less than charitable.

  3. Still getting people, like every year, saying wait till end of transfer window. Celtics transfer window should close before first champions league game.. We could easily be out of Europa league in 2 weeks and out of league before window closes. same every year. the years we made CL we got there by the skin of our teeth, seel Eddy now. free players who manager doesn’t want . no one will buy them Bolingoli. Ntcham etc. LG. we could have played youngsters from Januar7y onwards las t year but instead played Scott Brown and loanees who were not going to be here.

We WILL be back, the only question is when. I say 23/24 at the earliest…….unless there is an unprecedented, unexpected & massive investment on the near horizon.

We are nearing the very bottom rung of the European ladder – we probably will just hold on to the second-top step domestically, but only because this is Scottish football.

No doubt there are many in the football world wondering why Celtic, with no particular financial worries in recent times, have fallen so fast and so quickly and appear to be locked-in to this trajectory.

I wish I knew the answers – skimping on the players’ wage-bill has not been one of them.

  6. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Judea have taken an early lead in the “let’s call the other lot out, blame them for the loss of the league and proclaim ourselves as the righteous holders of the Timdom legacy”, after the latest disastrous result.

A couple of good early league results and an adverse one for Sevco will allow the currently maligned Front for the Popular Liberation of Judea, to mount a counter attack and proclaim themselves as Uber Tims wile the PFLJ are allocated the role of greenhuns.

Fun for all the family, so it is.

  11. Do we write off any potential transfer for Eduoard ?. I fear we must. He is playing rubbish and no team will be interested in him on this form. He is a man short when he has this attitude and we must not play him again. I know about shop windows but his performances are poor. As a single striker he is our focal point but he doesn’t work and doesn;t care. He treats the club with distain.

He has no belief in Ange and affects others in the team.

Him and a few others have been ruined by last season when they punished the club with poor performances

He needs to go or rot in the stand. He can take N’tcham, Boli and Julien with him. They clearly don’t want to play for the club. He can take Bitton and Griffiths with the rest of them

After Lenny and John kennedy I had hoped that a new manager would regenerate. It appears only the youngsters McGregor and Turnball have responded. The others dont give a monkeys.

I think Pep wouldn’t get a tune out of these players.

Sell the lot except McGregor, Turnball, Soro and give the new signings and youngsters the game time

    Try these steps

“Once you register to play – choose the Tournaments icon and choose football then choose Scottish Premiership.

You will then get the option of Start a Pool, Join a pool or do Last Season’s Pool- you must choose the Join a Pool option.

Once selected you get a search button- type in CQN Sentinels and it will take you there with the password prompt- roomuser.

You will then have to wait a few minutes till I get around to approving applicants but you can start making predictions. As well as CQN Sentinels, you may be allocated to a generic group table, such as Celtic fans, if you have identified as such. You don’t have to bother with 2 sets of predictions, one will do and they will be counted up in both leagues.

Let me know how you get on

The sleeping giant will never awaken until the people running the club want what we , the supporters , want .

There is obviously a clear distinction and direction between the two at the moment . The PLC holds sway over the fc and the board are there to make sure it stays that way .

  14. For a commercial organisation to complete its workforce recruitment as late as September for a programme of work that begins in July as akin to manager not fielding a full team on the pitch until half way through the first half.

Corporate negligence on a multi-£M, multi-year basis. We gloated that the huns watched their club die and walked away. We’re watching our club die a different death, but still buying season books.

Surely we can disagree – take a different view on football, or, anything else, and still be Tims to the core?
