Halcyon days to falling on the ball

214

I was told during the week that whenever I preview an opponent they seem to be on a run of good form.  So I’m delighted to share the information that Morton have not won any of their five Championship or Challenge Cup games played since November.  They even lost on Saturday, when bottom club Hamilton arrested a seven game losing streak in the league.

After a storied wander across Scotland since leaving Celtic, which took him to Hibs, Livingston, St Johnstone and Dunfermline, Efe Ambrose (34) settled in Greenock earlier this season and is expected to make a return to the Celtic Park pitch tomorrow.

His mind will no doubt drift back to halcyon days – beating Barcelona, included.  Let me take you back to another Efe occasion, though, just 10 months after that Barcelona win.  Morton visited Celtic Park on League Cup while they were bottom of the Championship.  The visitors knew they were onto a hiding if they dared lose concentration, so wilfully stuck to their task.

The game went to extra time when Efe fell on the ball inside the Celtic penalty area.  Current Morton manager, Dougie Imrie, scored with the resultant spot kick and apparent no-hopers knocked the champions out of the League Cup.  We started the game slow, Morton got into a defensive rhythm and no amount of effort could change the outcome.

No chance of that happening tomorrow.  Right?

  2. If St Johnstone turn up tomorrow, which,to be fair, they regularly do against them, they could get something. They played,120 minute slog on a Tattle field, then on the plastic hell, now onto another heavy pitch tomorrow. All in 6 days.Hammys will be tight as Banjo strings,+ some have been playing with niggling injuries.

The April 1968 penultimate league game of the season against Morton must have been one of the most outstanding matches to attend during the first 9-in-a-row.

We were level on points with the Deidclub who were leading 2-1 at Kilmarnock, while we were drawing 1-1 at home.

They were celebrating at full time, thinking the title was now in their control with a home match against Aberdeen to come as they attempted to go through the league unbeaten that season.

Up steps the great Bobby Lennox in the dying seconds with a winner, leaving us still ahead on goal average as it was back then I think, with an away match against Dunfermline to play. Mayhem ensued.

As it turns out, they blew it in their last game, losing 2-3, the best result Big Jock had ever heard at Hampden he claimed. He was attending the Scottish Cup final between Hearts and Dunfermline that day, hence Celtic playing their final match after the Deidclub’s.

We went on to win at a packed -out East end Park anyway, no calculators required, 3-in-a-row and plenty tae go.

So basically a few years back, Aguerooooooo had his Bobby Lennox moment.

  4. Ange hinting about ins and outs in the next few days in the press conference. Plural on both.

Iwata will be in the squad tomorrow but won’t start and no rush as hasn’t played for a while.

BSR – indeed. SMSM know the league is ours for the taking and now pushing a treble narrative aggressively. If we don’t win one they can portray the season as a failure.

  12. “Cantwell now looks as though he will be joining, and Beale looks as though he will be getting the MAESTRO,he has been chasing.”

‘Hooded Men’: Ex-Army head Mike Jackson questions torture claims

A former professional head of the Army has questioned whether the treatment of 14 men interned during the Troubles amounted to torture.

The men, known as the Hooded Men, were interned without trial in 1971.

Gen Sir Mike Jackson made the remarks in a BBC documentary detailing the men’s experience.

In 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that the methods used “would be characterised today” as torture.

During their Army detention, the men said they were forced to listen to constant loud static noise, deprived of sleep, food and water, forced to stand in a stress position and beaten if they fell.

They also said they were hooded and thrown from helicopters a short distance off the ground, having been told they were hundreds of feet in the air.

Sir Mike, who was a captain with 1 Para from 1970 to 1973, said: “As to whether or not, in extremis, physical violence on a prisoner of war or a detainee is ever acceptable is a very important question.

“Torture is illegal. [There is] a very clear convention on the matter.

“Whether depriving somebody of sleep for two nights, should or should not be illegal, I’m a bit more uncertain.”

Sir Mike claimed he was not in a position to argue with the “perception” of the 14 men and how they felt about their treatment.

He said: “This question, can non-violent ill-treatment equal torture, is very philosophical as well as legal.”

“You might be better asking a bishop on such matters.”

Don’t care if the SMSM push the 3-trophy narrative, as long as they never get the chance to salivate over any Cockney Treble.

  15. Scullybhoy,

One of me ma’s relatives sat and told me years ago at a family funeral in Belfast about being thrown out of a helicopter with a hood on, told he was 500 feet in the air. He was completely traumatised.

At that time this was just one of many of the things we were told by the state didn’t happen and we were paranoid. Pleased to see they are getting justice but we weren’t paranoid enough.

    Dirty War indeed.
