Halcyon days to falling on the ball

214

I was told during the week that whenever I preview an opponent they seem to be on a run of good form.  So I’m delighted to share the information that Morton have not won any of their five Championship or Challenge Cup games played since November.  They even lost on Saturday, when bottom club Hamilton arrested a seven game losing streak in the league.

After a storied wander across Scotland since leaving Celtic, which took him to Hibs, Livingston, St Johnstone and Dunfermline, Efe Ambrose (34) settled in Greenock earlier this season and is expected to make a return to the Celtic Park pitch tomorrow.

His mind will no doubt drift back to halcyon days – beating Barcelona, included.  Let me take you back to another Efe occasion, though, just 10 months after that Barcelona win.  Morton visited Celtic Park on League Cup while they were bottom of the Championship.  The visitors knew they were onto a hiding if they dared lose concentration, so wilfully stuck to their task.

The game went to extra time when Efe fell on the ball inside the Celtic penalty area.  Current Morton manager, Dougie Imrie, scored with the resultant spot kick and apparent no-hopers knocked the champions out of the League Cup.  We started the game slow, Morton got into a defensive rhythm and no amount of effort could change the outcome.

No chance of that happening tomorrow.  Right?

  1. An Dun – Surely 2 players valued at 25 million each on a free would entice clubs. 🤣🤣🤣

  6. Two hours to KO and very quiet on here. Does that indicate a lack of interest in today`s game or is everyone otherwise occupied in travelling to the game?

The obvious prediction for today is about 5 or 6 nil but Cup games occasionally throw up surprises. I am not sure what to expect in either score or team selection.

    ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

One of the most important games in Celtic’s history.

  8. Well- I’ll be heading to the match shortly- hope I’m not on my own there.

I am sad to see Josip go. He is a top class full back and was particularly good in starting fast counter attacks. The new guy has good qualities but has not yet reached Josip’s technical levels. Still we got our purported £10m , albeit maybe only 3/4 of that up front, so we move on.

Josip’s best legacy might be in persuading Jota to return and sign for us. Josip is one of the few departing Celts that I genuinely wish well for. Might even take an interest in the team he signed for

  9. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    £7.5m rising to £10m ?

Still less than I personally think he is worth.

But, then again, up to £3m more than recently quoted.

If it happens – good luck JJ and all the best.

  10. Having no luck at all….. having given up my ticket to daughter as she had arranged an Airbnb break for us at a lighthouse in deepest Galloway – at least I could watch the game on telly……Nae chance. BBC NI at the lighthouse!

    Back to CQN, then.

Film note for WBC: the lighthouse is the location where The Vanishing ( Gerald Butler/Peter Mullen) was filmed.

  11. Its never good seeing good player leave the hoops, good luck JJ, it’s been a pleasure. 7.5 raising to 10 million is good money for celtic. Hope scott robertson kicks on at fleetwood.

I would be comfortable seeing jenz and welsh leave this window. Neither are convincing imh. We have 3 centrebacks who are already ahead of them and we have johnston and iwati who are also able to play at centeback before even looking at the b team. I like big GG but if he wants to go, cheerio so long as we can get another forward in the door.

If we can cut loose hazard, Gucci, mccarthy and the Danish loanee etc that should be done, best for them and us. It’s crazy to think we have so many players that don’t/ can’t contribute before even looking at the many others already out on loan. Also need to look at getting turnbull on a long term deal or selling him.

Recruitment that focuses on better quality players who are versatile trumps having lots more players who rarely if ever play. A reduction in squad size should go hand in hand with the best youth players training with the first team squad to help accelerate their development. That can form part of the pathway folk always talk about👍
