‘HAMPDEN CRITICS SHOULD GET THE BOOT,’ MILLER

JOE MILLER reckons the people who support the move from Hampden to Murrayfield should be BARRED from football.

The former Celtic and Aberdeen winger is in total agreement with his ex-Dons boss Sir Alex Ferguson that it would be sheer folly to leave the national stadium.

Miller, who netted Celtic’s 1989 Scottish Cup-winning goal against Rangers at the ground, said: “Who in their right mind comes up with these suggestions?

“It is the prawn sandwich brigade, as Roy Keane once labelled some fat cats among the Manchester United support?

“Do they genuinely believe the atmosphere will be better in Edinburgh?

“Whoever is behind it, one things is certain – they are not football people. They don’t know the first thing about the history of Hampden and its proud heritage.

“Have they got a clue about the memorable rollicking international encounters and Cup Finals that have been played there over the years?

“Does the fact the fact that Real Madrid won that remarkable European Cup Final after beating Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 in 1960 not mean anything to them?

“Remember, over 135,000 supporters crammed into the stadium on the south side of Glasgow that evening.

“How about the fact Celtic drew a crowd of 136,505 for their second leg of their semi-final in the same tournament against Leeds United in 1970?

“That’s still a record attendance and unlikely to be beaten.

“And, sticking with Europe’s premier tournament, what about Zidine Zidane’s sublime volley that won the trophy 2-1 for Real Madrid when they faced Bayer Leverkusen in 2002?

“The folk who advocate leaving Hampden should be barred from football, they have nothing to contribute.”

Miller added: “I agree 100 per cent with Fergie –  there’s no way we should even contemplate going to the so-called home of rugby after the 2020 Euros.

“He is quite correct when he says this is where our heritage has been formed.

“And, yes, he’s spot on when he insists this has nothing to do with money. You can’t buy history.

“This is Scottish football’s spiritual home and it will never be replicated elsewhere.

“So, let’s put a halt to this utter nonsense, listen to the people who know what they are talking about and get it sorted.”
