Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

I think Yogi is the most likely replacement for Ronny too.

I do think that if we go for Yogi that we will see committed players who play decent football BUT Yogi would need a DoF to help him attract players. My worry with Yogi is his career so far draws parallels with Mogga. I hope we get a strong willed experienced manager in who is up for a fight because we have a battle on our hands domestically next season from a few challengers.

    ****************

Euro qualification would be my only worry LIVIBHOY, but we would see the last of the non-triers on a pitch with Yogi watching on.

Just my opinion and i could be miles away from who it’s gonna be -)))

How is it daft? And I am offended by the use of the word hun to describe my view. Maybe you are not hurting as much as me after Sunday? Maybe you are not as worried about us losing the league as much as me. Maybe you don’t love the club as much as me. Offended good. Don’t ever associate the word hun with me.

Many wanted Ronny gone before Sunday. I didn’t. They could say I was wrong. I could have argued going into that game with a new man in charge would have been a disaster. I can’t now.

Y NOT – you must be one of the naive fans that think the title is in the bag.

  3. TT.

Agreed. Superb footballer, decent cove and millionaire. ( Not a manager of Glasgow Celtic)

His name should not be taken in vain.

  4. Please guys stop sayin’ stuff like “Yogi “…………..

I’ve got the yips already and you’re just making things worse.

  5. Davidpoulos – agreed but when you start hearing the likes of Yogi recommended then McGhee’s CV blows him out the water.

McGhee has some excellent credentials on his CV. However he has some spectacular fails. Normally these would outweigh his successes however when we are comparing against other non-CVs he should stack up. Who knows his failures may have made him more rounded and get his best back out of him.

For the record I don’t want McGhee. I’m just saying if we are aiming so low this guy starts to become a contender.

Weeminger – which one do you mean. Many in the list fit that criteria.

    Y not 67,

RD has already been sacked. He may have been told weeks ago. He’s gone. He’s planning his next job. Packing up.

    Do they have a replacement?

Hopefully it’s not yogi , ffs have they gone me ta in here, Yogi? Gimmi a break ffs.

  7. TONYBHOY on 19TH APRIL 2016 12:08 PM

Larsson. There’s nothing about his record that suggests a) he can make players play above themselves – which we need for European games. b) he can identify good, cheap (relatively) players – which we also need,

  8. Gary67 @10.58

I’d be delighted with that arrangement (Clarke – head coach, Strachan – director of football).

  9. TONYBHOY

it’s not good business to through the baby out with the bath water, if you think someone is gonny take charge of the team for the last five games, I’m afraid your Naivete is in over drive, use your head man? It’s just daft, plain daft, aye and Hun media pash.

  10. Dharmabam

    That’s what I was wondering.

If so then the board are more culpable than I first imagined for this season.

It actually would explain a lot. However I cannot believe that would be the case. Criminal if so.

  11. Our last director of football? Remind me on how that worked out please?

The place has gone nuts the inmates have taken over the asylum

  12. Y NOT

Yeah – so lets just keep a man no-one is playing for and throw away the league. Dens Park gave us the indication.

Strachan – DoF? How is his record in that role? Or are we going for another novice again?

  13. Probably putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with something other than 4 but Malky Mackay being interviewed at Hampden pre-match on Sunday got me thinking (always a dangerous thing). Was his extensive interview on Radio Scotland last month the first shots in it becoming acceptable for him to become our manager?

Admission of guilt. Knows it was wrong. Didn’t mean to come out the way it did. Has been for counseling. Would love to manage Celtic one day but they have a manager at present and it would be disrespectful to talk about it. Been away all over Europe in last year observing and learning, particularly in Germany.

Hmmm as they say, makes you think (well makes me think).

  14. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I think the Ronny situation has clouded the view of our team on Sunday they are highly paid so called professionals and yet against Newco a rag bag selection of free transfers and loanees they couldnt cut the mustard now we can blame Ronny all we like but once the players cross the white line it is up to them.I think the full playing staff at Celtic needs to be looked at closely and those who dont have the bottle for the big games (European or league ) even if they are the best players at the club we should get rid of them I believe we the Celtic support were badly let down by these highly paid bottlers. H.H.

Being called a daftie by you is the ultimate in irony. I would wear it like a badge of honour.

  16. Ok. If a director of football isn’t the way to go then Strachan – manager, Clarke – assistant (although I’d be quite happy to have Clarke on his own as gaffer with his own back room staff).

Don’t flatter yourself, your not that important :-P

  18. I roughly count that’s about twenty names in the hat since Sunday, all these guys out there and we took RD, amazing, only names missing are McCoist and McCall, mind you it’s early yet, stick around.

  19. JOE FILIPPIS HAIRCUT on 19TH APRIL 2016 12:19 PM

That’s an issue for me as well. Marvin the Paranoid Android could’ve delivered a monotone team talk. The team should still be up for a semi final.

The tactics were wrong. That’s pretty clear but that doesn’t explain the lack of drive or energy.

  20. The fear about not appointing an interim is that there is no-one running the team. The players know he’s gone and that is very clear.

Do we hope that they just get it together themselves and start playing for RD? Or does someone come in and let them know that they they are playing for their careers and start preparing the ground for next season?

Only those in the know and at Lennoxtown can tell us what is going on there.

  21. Tonybhoy,

I had doubts as soon as I posted my last comment, as I’m sure a previous Dermot Desmond quote was along the lines of job contracts being more an agreement of what happens/how much is paid WHEN the employment is broken not IF, and In that case, I would have thought that Ronny would have been paid off immediately, whether he resigned or whether he was sacked.

Still, I don’t think Paul67 would have mentioned it of it wasn’t in some way relevant.

Weeminger. It has happened a few times this season that the players have looked like rabbits in a cars headlights. There seems very little pride in there performance where is the we are playing in a cup semi -final I would run through a brick wall to get to the final ? H.H.

Great to see you back on the blog and good to hear that your career move is keeping you very busy!

I feel sorry for Ronny who I think Celtic did well to identify and bring to the club. However we wasted it by giving him the wrong job and also also by ensuring that there has been no-one with any football knowledge from inside the game above a 40 year old rookie manager at the club.

I first saw Ronny over in Ireland at the supporters rally in Dublin just a day or so after his appointment. He looked a little shell shocked that night and didn’t speak that well – certainly he has talked a good game ever since.

That night I thought that the Celtic job was going to be too big for him but obviously I hoped I would be wrong.

Continually I have posted on here about a director of football and suggested Davie Hay for the job. Davie has an eye for a player and for these last two years could have helped Ronny in so many ways – while preventing the type of Carlton Cole signing.

I cannot believe that Ronny wanted Cole so if not him, who did?

It tells you all you need to know about Ronny’s fettered role at the club.

Someone above him, fighting for the football department, would have been helpful and could have prevented the mess we now find ourselves in.

I know a few of the guys behind the scenes in the development level and below and the feedback i have had is that Ronny has taken a great interest in all areas of the footballing department, making many improvements etc. In comparison to Neil Lennon it is night and day.

So Ronny has been doing this work, within his own vision for the club, while managing the first team with a squad of players that are not all of his own choosing. He was also given two strangers to work with as his assistants.

A receipt for failure if ever there was one.

Ronny’s departure, when it comes, will be a loss to Celtic, the club that gave him the wrong job.

On Sunday, I have found it too painful to comment. I gave my ticket away so watch the first half on my phone and listened to the second half whilst driving.

Thomson clearly avenged the biggest honest mistake to go against the old Rangers when he allowed Rangers to take a Celtic throw-in. There was no doubt about that on the radio. Joe Miller’s winner in the 1989 Scottish Cup Final has been avenged.

Danny Wilson was devastated last summer when we walked away from our interest in him. He had walked out on Hearts on a promise but the availability of Dedryck Boyata became available. He tried to go back to Hearts before accepting his lot in the Championship.

Their support celebrations reminded me of the night we beat Barca and is a measure of where they are. Lou Macari took us to Ibrox just after getting the job and we have a great afternoon there winning 2-1. All was well with us for a few hours at least. Sunday’s result will be one of the few they will achieve against us for the foreseeable in my view.

Who to replace Ronny when he goes? I would go for Paul Lambert and Yogi Hughes as his assistant. Both know what Celtic are about, both want to play football the way we want, Yogi won’t accept chancers and Lambert has European experience. I have friends who support Aston Villa who rated him higher than MON.

Warburton’s remarks yesterday called out King who made all the right noises. The proof will be in the pudding though and if the London based manager isn’t given the backing he has now been promised he may go elsewhere.

I switched off my mobile at half time because that scumbag Judas appeared. His decision was a massive blow to us and set us back for at least five years. Imagine being bold enough to offer a London based Englishman the chance to lead a side with a decent budget into the Champions League?

The players shoooorly realise that their performances this season will impact on their future under a new manager. I’d hope that they’d be busting a gut from here on in.

Not holding my breath, mind. Not on how they’ve played this year to date.

  28. TOSB

With redoubled respect, I think Celtic are doing the right thing and abiding by a decision that has already been taken.

I didn’t envisage defeat to Sevco and said beforehand it was unthinkable, even though in technical terms a good Sevco beat a poor Celtic side on penalties, which shouldn’t come as a surprise given some of the mistakes we’ve made in the transfer market and Sevco’s desire a la desperation.

The defeat to Sevco sadly is another first for Celtic beaten in an important game

by a new club at the second time of asking. The board have shown restraint and denied the opposition, the satisfaction of compounding their win by giving them

cudos, and the head of Ronny Deila.

Remarkable restraint because the decision to part with Ronny was taken some time ago.

That said a week is a long time in football and I’m highly unlikely to have forgiven the players (with the odd exception ) come Sunday, and no more damage can occur whilst the transfer window is closed.

There will be a quorum of the support, who’ll do that even grudgingly.

The next chapter of Celtic starts very soon.
