Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

    Fellow Dafties.

I think we should form a club/ clique. Members would proudly wear a huge badge on their chest proclaiming, “Tony Donnelly called me a Daftie”.

  3. My ideal man would be Davie Moyes because he is a proven manager ( we cant risk another “promising manager” appointment) Yes it did nt work out at Man U but I honestly think he never got a chance. Also he would insist on a half decent budget and I dont think he is the type that would let CEOs mess with team signings etc. A decent manager with our resources domestically would win the Title in the next few years without too much trouble IMHO. Where Davie Moyes could really work for us is in Europe. He is the type of manager who when an underdog does well ….and in Europe we are always gonna be under dogs. I could see him making us qualify for champs league more times than not and if we are in Europa Im sure we would give a good account of ourselves. Talk of maybe a “Yogi” type manager worries me . No disrespect to Yogi , love the big guy but any manager ( domestically) would be despereate at the chance of managing Celtic , so desperate in fact that he would probably accept the job with no or very little budget and an interfering board always looking over his shoulder. IF we go down the domestic route Robbie Neilson has impressed me with what he has done at Hearts

I don`t disagree with any of that.

The culpability for our current situation does not lie with any one individual.

BUT the performance on the field is the responsibility of one individual…..The coach

The buck stops there. It seems to be the case in every other club.

    Surely.

Apparently , Ronny will leave at the end of the season.

His failings have been obvious since his arrival and yet he has been permitted to remain at his post for far too long.

I too would like to know why.

Just maybe those are the terms of his contract.

So,whoever is responsible for those terms would have to be called to account.

    Hail Hail

You are nothing but a silly old fool.

You can hardly string a sentence together, yet you are calling me a daftie:)

    You know feck all.

Its like talking to a pile of sawdust.

You are just a puppet with a big mouth.

Im sure the blog will make their own judgement about who is daft.

  6. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Underwhelming. I take this blog as a signal that the only thing that will change in the summer is the patsy in the dug out. Still Lawwell calling all the football strategy shots, which is fair enough given his immense qualifications as a bean counter.

Lawwell’s success criteria are all financial and often personal. That can be the only explanation for the appointment of a desperately weak, yes man of a manager and revolving door of dross signings we’ve increasingly seen over his tenure as CEO.

When he walked in the door MO’N saw him for what he was and walked out. With a few exceptions it has been a downward trajectory for us since. He’s emptied the stadium, eviscerated the turnover, stripped quality out of the team, divided the support and worst of all, given the Hun every possible encouragement to “return to their rightful place as top dogs”. And for this set of ‘achievements’ he is rewarded by a 617% increase in his remuneration. And still some in our support buy the guff that this guy is something special and irreplaceable.

    As if.

  7. TD67

You are lying about Res 12.

You were against it from the start cos you thot the club were against it.

Some of on here actually have a brain and can remember things.

  8. Im sure the blog will make their own judgement about who is daft.

Awe aye, I’m sure they have, my sides are splitting, you think I care about people’s judgement of me on here? That’s how daft you are ya crackpot. Lol

  9. BMCUWP,

You would hope so. However, there must be some for whom that is too late and who have already burnt their boats.

    TOSB,

Good idea although I think those not called a daftie would be in the minority and have formed their own clique, by default!

Thanks for the reply. I think it is too late at this point to relieve Ronny of his duties. It should have been done at one of the points I referred to in my post. However, we have, with 5 games left, a manager who knows that he is leaving whether he wins or loses. He has known this since before the recent game against Hearts when we won 3-1. What a way to run a football operation.

Peter Lawell now to be known as Mr. Bungle.

  11. I can’t help but thinking that any new appointment will either be British or an ex-player as that will be seen as least risky by the board. However I think Lucien Favre would be a great appointment. Was a success in Switzerland winning the league a couple of times with moderate European success before successful times in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin and then taking Borussia Monchengladbach from the threat of relegation to the Champions League.

He is an acclaimed tactician known for his well organised sides that play attractive dynamic, quick and attack-minded football and at 58 he is experienced rather than a prospect learning his trade. He was being spoken about previously as a candidate to replace Guardiola at Bayern and linked with the Liverpool job before Klopp. He’s got a record for working wonders with a limited budget and developing young players so he seems ideal for our needs.

Nice spin, as I posted earlier, the club where all over this and looking into it before the shareholders got res12 together, and I said that at the time, and said that the resolutioners should leave it to the club, but they didn’t, that’s what I was against, not the resolution, the people in charge of it, I’v been posting this for nearly three years, and every year that goes bye people like yourself and the brain dead green man keep trying to spin it, nice try but.

Wait and see. The season ticket renewal forms are not out yet.

I would say that 35000 renewals would mean no change other than manager.

20000 renewals and Peter Lawell is toast.

“The brain dead green man” at least suggests HIS brain was alive at one point.

  16. Has anyone thrown Paul Clement’s name into the ring yet? Thought he was very unfairly treated by Derby after getting them into the playoff places of the Championship after only 7 months in charge. He understands the pressure of working at the highest level after being Assistant Manager under Ancellotti at Real Madrid. He has a great coaching pedigree and I think he would understand our club.

That said, would also like Steve Clarke to be considered or Moyes. Any one of these three I believe could drag us out of the mess we are in right now.

    It could happen.

As for Ronny Deila. Is his whingeing about how rough the press and fans are in Scotland not all the evidence we would ever need that this guy was temperamentally unsuited to the job? Too late to grow a pair Ronny, but c’mon son, how about some balls?

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I would like a manager who is not the players pal a manager who is not scared to kick the players butt when they deserve it a leader who sorts out problems behind closed doors not in the media.A manager who has had good results in Europe a man who will not accept players being signed without his agreement.Who is this man I dont know but if we dont look for him we will never find him. Some of the names being mentioned on here are shocking Hartley Hughes Mc Intyre McGhee Coyle McCarthy hardly anything won by all of them we should be raising our sights much higher if that lot is our level we would in my opinion be better of keeping Ronny. H.H.

  19. TD67

    It’s not spin.

You can’t get out of things by saying I am spinning things.

For once grow a pair and admit you are wrong, you were against it cos you thot the club were against it.

The proof is there for all to see, it even got you a yellow card, or is that spin, mmmmm

  20. No Bobby Does It Petta on

Henrik Larsson would be a huge mistake. Love the King, favourite Celt ever, but not for manager; he simply doesn’t have the credentials. And for spotting a player, see Mo Bangura (if the talk was indeed true). Having said that, he would sell season tickets and perhaps this will be PL’s biggest consideration for next season.

To those of you lobbing forward names like Hiddink, Simeone, Moyes, Rogers – with respect, you’re deluded. There’s not a chance in hell of guys with their pedigree and ambition coming to the footballing backwater of Scotland, never mind the paltry salary and tiny budget. It will need to be another “project” coach from the Continent, or a cheap option from Scotland.

And whilst I’m on, and if anyone is still reading, the boy Scviatchenko should be the starting point for next season. That is a player, and a leader. Give him the armband, and a pacey reliable partner, then build a team from there.

I changed my seat this season,my youngest didn’t want to go,bored senseless. Early in the summer I got a phone call. Lady on the phone introduced herself and then said “What a season eh? How good was that? Just a quick call because we’ve noticed you haven’t renewed your season ticket.” I informed her that I had moved seat, she apologised and thanked me for my time. I hope that Lady hasn’t booked her summer holidays yet got the feeling she’ll be a tad busy this summer.

Post your proof? Or for ever hold your tongue, anyone can accuse anyone of anything proving it is another thing, yellow card for speaking against res12, never, talking standing my ground with the clown who was giving it tight to me yes, hands up, res12 was always a good thing any Tim will tell you that, I was against who the ball carriers where, everyone knows that but keep spinning.

  24. TOSB

    Good show.

We’ve made a mess of the last three appointments to a differing degree including defaulting to Neil Lennon

    and Peter Lawwell’s road shows.

What (self respecting) ‘big name’ manager would roll up at Celtic Park on Sunday and start taking Ronny’s team and title over the line?

None, – hence Paul67’s caretaker quote.

They like shortlists at Celtic and ‘ chance meetings on the race course ’ ‘ and punts ’ .

Our season ticket renewal letter will be postponed, that next chapter is a cliffhanger, whether

Ronny should have gone at one of the points you mention is our history.
