Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

They are even brazening out a Sevco defeat, whilst the Celtic support stews.

    Nothing changed regarding Ronny’s plight.

They took the gamble a while back, and they are seeing it through with an eight point

lead in the league, and we’re favourites to win.

Do you think Lawwell or Bankier will have enough of a brass neck to give a speech on Flag day next season? (If we actually manage to collapse over the finishing line in 1st place)

If something doesn’t happen to unite our support between now and then, and to build bridges between the support and the club,it will be like giving a speech on flag day in Aberdeen.

    The place will be empty.

I guess my (almost Project Fear-esque) point is that you need to be careful what you wish for.

It also makes me inclined to just try and remove myself from worrying about anything beyond who the 11 are on a match day and how they play. There’s so little the ordinary fan can do to influence what goes on. Even if we had fan reps on the board you’re still left hoping that they do what you would, and that’s not always going to be true.

In summary, perhaps ignorance really is bliss.

  9. I sincerely hope the board are looking far wider than the obvious choices of the Coyle’s, Keane’s & Mackay’s. As I posted earlier Lucien Favre would be on my shortlist but the likes of Ivan Jovanovic would also be worth looking at. He performed wonders with APOEL taking them through the CL qualifiers for the first time and even as far as the CL quarter finals. He’s currently managing in Dubai but is out of contract in the summer.

Personally,I respect your right to defend your opinions about how the club is run. Even though I vehemently disagree with them.

I respect also how strong those opinions are.

Canny help thinking that the board are in a bad place when it’s left to you, mind. No offence.

  13. Popped in earlier commented on the good quality & tone of the Blog before going off gardening. Took a break from gardening and had a peep, to see The Green Man & Tony Donnelly giving every 6 yr old kid in Scotland a good run for their money. Apart from fact that Paul will yellow card ye both if he scrolls back, just remember thousands of people worldwide are reading your posts. FFS get a grip both of ye.

  14. Some more thoughts;

    – maybe Ronny isn’t being sacked but re-deployed

    – despite me blaming the players on Sunday more than Ronny (although ultimately I agree he has to go….and if so it should have been straight away) could it not be down to lack of desire or tactics etc and more a case of nerves and lack of confidence. Would explain a lot. But why……..?

    – Moyes has success at one club which circumstances and surroundings could have been a major factor. No guarantee to success.

    – Robbie Neilson? Worst suggestion on here and that’s before you take into account he’s a zombie.

  15. Bmcw

Take offence on what? You sitting there making an arse of yourself tossing in Snyd Wee jibes? I wouldent have thought anything less of you, it’s what you do best,.

I don’t believe you mate. I’ve never met you but for years we’ve both been friends on here. I have your passion, I have your love and I have your concerns. I can’t be substituted on the terracings’ of Parkhead with a soulless blow up supporter… AND NEITHER CAN YOU. And neither can any other supporter.

  17. Day 2 after that embarrassment on Sunday.

Apparently Ronny leaving at the end of the season.

Yet the silence from Celtic park is deafening.

2 options, back him or sack him.

At least let the fans know.

  18. CORKCELT

away back in your garden if your not happy, or start a convo. Yourself, like Bmcw no one was talking to you two, was between the green man and me, if there was a PM system in here we would use that, but there isn’t, so I’m afraid you either deal with it or scroll past, I do it every day in here whe the great political debates are on, I suggest you try that, no offence, but it is what it is.

  19. No to Keane, Coyle, WGS, Lenny, Lambert, Rogers, Moyes or any other UK-based manager.

Yes to an established European with a pedigree for bringing through talent, having a system, punching above his weight and who’ll tell the CEO where to go if he interferes in football matters.

I suspect in the eternal pendulum swing we’ll turn against the Euro experiment and go for some blood and snotters merchant with a ‘connection’ to Celtic.

64.53% of the support will hate him by month 3.

In month 4 will be the phrase…”well at least with Ronny,…….”

  26. KITALBA on 19TH APRIL 2016 1:59 PM

Of course I won’t. I tried to stop coming here for a while, Not possible.

However, I do have a certain amount of jealousy for those that can simply support the team and leave it there.

As a club if we inspire to get even close to where we were we’re praying for one of several things to happen:

    a) tv rights to suddenly become 10% of the EPL deal (reflecting the population) – unlikely

    b) an invite to the English set up – really unlikely

    c) access to whatever competition the ‘big’ European clubs are plotting – unlikely

    d) If (c) happens and some notable names are excluded – I’m thinking the Dutch, Portuguese, Belgian giants – then we might see some move to a trans-national competition that might be well paid for.

Our domestic revenue is stagnant though and without a boost from somewhere the fall will continue.

I genuinely could do with a couple of years away from all this stuff tbh. The boys have just had their 1st full season as ST holders and they’re not massively enthusiastic about it all. So we’ll see what happens come renewal time.
