CALLUM McGREGOR must have sensed a hint of deja vu against Motherwell yesterday.
The Celtic captain danced a jig of joy as he celebrated goals from Luis Palma and Matt O’Riley that gave the champions a crucial 2-1 victory at Fir Park.
And McGregor may have remembered an afternoon from December 2016 when he also revelled on the same spot at the same venue when Tom Rogic was the Hoops’ late matchwinner.
DECEMBER 3 2016…Callum McGregor celebrates his goal that sparked the fightback at Fir Park.
SEPTEMBER 30 2023…Callum McGregor shows his delight at Luis Palma’s goal to set up an amazing finale.
The midfielder had replaced Honduran left-back Emilio Izaguirre on the half-hour mark with the hosts leading 1-0 with a strike from Louis Moult. Five minutes later, the frontman doubled his side’s advantage.
However, McGregor inspired a mighty second-half comeback when he rifled the first past Craig Samson and Patrick Roberts headed in the equaliser in the 70th minute. Amazingly, Well went ahead again within a minute with a drive from Lionel Ainsworth that left Craig Gordon helpless.
Brendan Rodgers’ side’s response was instantaneous with Stuart Armstrong whipping in the equaliser a minute later which set the scene for Wizard of Oz Rogic to take the headlines with a wonderful angled drive low into the far corner.
Happy daze, Callum!
