Hard work, fans and Celtic with focus

316

I love Paris, the food, the sights, the people, the atmosphere of the place.  So it came as a surprise when I watched Messi and Neymar booed by their own PSG fans after their elimination from the Champions League.  The greatest of all time and a talented show pony, both the toast of the city recently, as persona non grata.  How can it be?

The short version of events is that PSG were eliminated because neither did enough running around against Real Madrid to prevent their elimination.  This is a bit unfair.  A shark is a shark.  If you swim with one, you should know how it will behave.

When it comes to energy, Messi, for all his exalted status, is more Charlie Nicholas than Frank McGarvey.  His Brazilian protégée, Neymar, was always going to behave like his master.  Maybe Messi’s game would be hampered, if he put in the hard miles, I doubt he ever found out.

I also doubt Leo has seen the best of Paris: the Tower, Montmartre, Sacre Coeur.  No matter how long he stays, he will remain an unknown recluse, inevitably leaving behind fans who wonder what they were initially thinking.  Still, booing your own after a defeat?  It’s not a good look.   A PSG decline, without the prize they really want, seems inevitable.

It hurt when Bodo/Glimt taught us a lesson home and away last month.  Having already eliminated AZ Alkmaar from one European competition this season, we would feel hopeful of doing so again, if we faced them in the Conference League, instead of Bogo/Glimt.

There are compensations, primarily our hunt for the league title.  Instead of journeys to Netherlands, all the focus at Lennoxtown this week is on facing Ross County at Celtic Park on Saturday.  It has been a while since we were this confident.

  1. P&O — Looking like Wapping Mk2.

I wonder how much DP will pay out in PR fees to get the media onside?

The whole thing looks like a private equity ply straight from central casting.

Take out as much cash as you can.

Load up on debt — to your pals at high rates if you are good.

Watch the business slowly implode under the weight of the cash leaving the business.

Shout holy murder and then sack the high paid end of the workforce.

The same thing happened to the nursing homes.

Just a case that they shouted holy murder and demanded bigger fees or granny gets made homeless.

Interesting to see how the public mood responds?

    Casino capitalism at its worst.

    Casino capitalism?

    Doesn’t the casino always win?

  3. Maritime — not quite the wild west some portray it as.

Standards can and are enforced by a number of arrangements.

Just a case that it is global and needs countries to agree.

    Insurance plays a big part.

Rust buckets sink which is bad for business.

  4. For years Messi was part of the Barca high press. At 34 those days are over. Anyone expecting anything else is living on a different planet.

Apparently the huns are getting cold feet over the Sydney Cup – they’re ran by a mob mentality so I was expecting nothing else but their cancellation once news leaked of our larger pay day. Hopefully the organisers take them to court for breaking the contract !

I know who’s in the EU, however a lot of folk who voted leave thought they were going to increase the job chances of Brits (sic)

I was being sarcastic about the whole ‘take back control’ lie – globalisation as you rightly point out.

Still waiting for the Tory in the ointment!

  6. Maritime politics / labour exploitation — the UK and Irish offshore fishing fleet would be a good place to start.

People flown in from low wage developing countries to do long tours offshore for a pittance while the boat owners build the new Ponderosa every couple of years and pull at the heart strings of the public to mooch money from the state.

    Not good.

  7. Although owned by Dubai – P&O ferries is registered in UK, with office in Dover – surely their subject to UK employment law which hasn’t changed since we left the EU.

I also don’t think we will be allowed to win league aa they need the money, thoughhhhhhh they have had chances lately to put the fix in and haven’t which has surprised me.

  9. Leftie………..

    Thurs still time.

And our fears somehow transmit to the park….or is that how it feels?

We are sleekitly cheated, impeded and held up by thems that support the huns.

to win we have to be ten times better then thems,

and it’s too tight for errors.

  10. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

WARNING : The following post likely based far more on sentiment and experience than logic or evidence.

Was about to type “I don’t like PSG” then realised that wasn’t true.

I despise their funding model and what that has done to the game but that’s about it.

Messi is probably my favourite player of this generation but, from the little I’ve seen of him this season?

… plays like a man without a soul or feeling.

    In other news …..

    I love Celtic

I find myself thinking about the club when I should be thinking about other (e.g. work)

    Bodo/Glimt ?

    Conference League level?

    Europa League level?

    IMHO, Yawn.

Why continue the fixation around compareing and contrasting with clubs in the 50-99 ranking?

We’ve an opportunity to make it automatically into the big one (!)

Oversimplification I know but to the question

What maketh a Champions League team?

Surely the answer is just …

    “Playing in the Champions League?”

    🤔🤔🤔

  13. Personally, I never wanted the Oz game against them. Why should we subsidise the scum who hate us, why?

If they pull out, then brilliant

    KINGLuBO

  14. Turning to Saturday, Ross county has won their last 3 games so don’t expect an easy game ,- nor should we. Need a good pacey start to the game.

  15. I wonder what % of those P+O staff voted for brexit and the tories?

To those I would respectfully suggest that karma is a bitch.

When it gets to the sticky end of the season I think you/we could find a case for us to drop points to anyone, its all part of baggage that comes with being a Tim. However if we are genuinely worthy of winning this league we should sweep RC aside with a confident performance.

I’m thinking a confident win by two goals and hopefully no injuries.

On the flip side I hope Red Star kick the animals all over the park in Belgrade tonight. not too much to ask is it? Off the park would be fun too.

  18. Fantastic moment for a young fan, KT taking time out to meet the young man and sign his football top for the kid ❤️👍

    Superstars both of them.

  19. I’ve been on here since the beginning but I’ve never been a prolific poster. I prefer to read.

Regardless of the individuals and the reasons why it is sad that prolific posters like Saint Stivs decide its no longer for them.

I do find a log in way less than I used to and scroll past a lot but thats my choice. In general CQN has more +ves than -ves for me but I can go weeks without logging in so its demise would not be the end of the world.

I worry that a lot of our internationals have to travel so far.

Seems Rogic in particular plays almost every minute for his country.

    Glad Kyogo is not travelling.

  21. Farewell St Stivs,a great poster.I will welcome you to the land of the lurkers.Totally disgusted by the lack of regulation, regards the Numpty with the 5 names.Sweary words, not the worst, will be cracked down on by our new Mod,but not the idiots that infest the blog.

    Vaccine\ Covid deniers,Putin\Russia sympathisers,gibberish talkers,multiple name mockers,who laugh and joke at posters.

I know I am not one of the favourites on the Blog, because I don’t toady and speak shit so everyone will be my friend, not me,but I have been here for numerous years, but now, this is not the wonderful Blog I joined. It has become a travesty.Paul’s fault,no idea, but not right.

Big Jimmy the last straw for me.A disgrace, but this.is the Blog that Paul rules. Many supplicants in Jimmy’s name, ignored, while lunatics play with Blog, unheeded.

I wish the good guys well, the snides,,Chumps, and nutters, not so much.

  22. Go tell the Spartim on

Personally i too think Diego Maradona was the best ever but then even he thought Tomas Felipe Carlovich was better than him (ive only read anecdotal pieces on him, seems like Diego may have been right).

Is anyone surprised at P&O, just another long line of crooks getting away with it.

  23. Ernie

    Re P&O.

It would be interesting to know how much was the ‘molotov’ shareholding? I would suggest there are many conglomerates with large Russian shareholdings that could destabilise as in the P&O example

Any tories or school mates of tories on the board? In which case quite a lot I’d wager.

  25. No league run-in has easy games. (with the possible exception of Dunfermline who took to the field with sun glasses and speedos on Vs Old Rangers in 2003)

    Unless you make them easy.

That takes hard work, talent and mental toughness. It will require defenders to be brave when we are defending a narrow lead late on and attackers to be tough and trust their skill and speed when we are chasing a late winner.

Ange’s team will not be allowed to think that only the Sevco games will be tough. I predict that one or both of the title challengers will drop points in the run-in, outwit the head to head games. It happens in more seasons than it has not occurred.
