Harsh lesson that Celtic need to improve

344

It pains me to say it, but Newco’s run in Europe this season has been exceptional.  We can make whatever excuses we like about the merits of Braga and Red Star, but this didn’t matter to us in 2003 when we eliminated Boavista, then 10th in the Portuguese league, and it should not matter now.

For much of the game last night, Leipzig looked ordinary; unable to get into the Newco box, never mind create a chance.  The goal came from a low percentage shot by a left back who moments before mis-controlled the ball to let it run out of play.

Leipzig, though, are anything but ordinary.  Defeat to two late goals by Union Berlin on Saturday was their only reversal in 17 outings, a run that includes wins away over Atalanta, Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad. They remain favourites to progress to the final, but the game did not go to plan for the Germans and their place in the final is not assured.

Four years ago today we beat Newco 5-0 to win the league on our way to being the first Scottish team to retain the treble.  That day, that season, was enormous fun, but it was one in a long line of seasons when Celtic were not pushed.  Strategically, that treble did less for us than I hope the Scottish Cup semi-final defeat two weeks ago will do.  You and I now know we need to improve for next season.

To win this league we will need to better a team who reached a European semi-final.  If we do, it would be a remarkable achievement for a new manager and overwhelmingly new playing squad.  For the remainder of this season and almost certainly next season, we face-off against a very competitive outfit for a Champions League bounty that would be transformational to whoever wins.

  2. the IC in the English toon — used to be walk in for our games.

Not sure if CoViD19 will have changed things.

Growth Agenda — the CFC Bars site is a very useful asset.

My thoughts are that it would be worthwhile for the club to support it.

The more locations there are on the list the bigger our profile will become.

Brum vs Cov shows the difference CFC bars makes to our place in the community.

Brum is a bit of a CFC wasteland while Cov has quite a few busy bars.

Even Rugby has some supporters in the pub trade although their IC is a bit lazy although the 7-0 Hertz Sunday was some day.

Never made it to Sunny Nunny — the land that time really has forgotten.

At least you will never be pulled up for being too political …

Moon howling / GGG hatred / virtue signalling / spouting Forger’s Gazette headlines — all yes but no politics.

  18. without making comment in a political sense, someone bangs on all the time about “identity politics”

i am sorting out a weeks worth of post that comes in the front door.

A multitude of local election leaflets.

Our Renfrewshire council ward is what could be called as traditional Tory blue. The delighted Annabel (copyright AGCR) being an MP/MSP for many many years.

However, the huge residential development has forever changed the demographics of the area, young professional families moving in, social housing also being provided, its incredible the amount of celtic tops seen on any given weekend, kids and adults alike, and even a suppoters bus being established.

    Changed days indeed.

The biggest issues being raised have been schooling and medical centre.

A new non-dom primary has been established, hundreds of kids moving to it, relieving the pressure on the oold school. Its very notiecable the school busses leaving the are for the local out of town non-dom high school, and indeed the catholic primaries, and the catholic high schoolers going out as well.

so what is the hot topics for the local issues,

still schooling, what is needed next ? well a non-dom high school obviously.

who is presenting the argument the most ?

2 conservative and unionist candidates, i would guess early 30s, i dont know them, never encountered them, but schools , litter and parking makes up their priorities.

their leaflets have lovely pictures, i am really simplistic on these, i see what it presents on the tin.

the two gents are respledent in their Blue puffas, with orange lining in the hoods. One is better dressed than the other, nice trousers with brown shoes and belt, the other has trackies and trainers presenting a sporty look.

sometime that identity politics is quite easy to interprept.

The lod locals complain about many things, seeming to dislike intensely incomers and the youth.

  19. TOM MCLAUGHLIN on 30TH APRIL 2022 1:31 PM

    O’Sullivan 15-9 Higgins mid-session interval.

First to 17 goes into tomorrow’s final.

    John needs a miracle. 🙈

    —-

I’m sorry to say, yes it’s not looking good. I think he had to get to at least two behind, in the last session. He had his chance, but not scoring enough and missing a few, with Ronnie clearing up. I thought Trump would win the championship but Williams has made an incredible comeback. Fingers crossed, John can do likewise.

  20. Looking forward to being in Paradise tomorrow for the Glasgow derby. Early start so will take it easy tonight. Or at least, that’s the plan.

  21. Big week in Ireland when the Shinners take it over.Bobby Sands would have been proud.

    Anyway,

Sutton on substance abuse I think, saying Gio should start before Kyogo.Really?.

Like saying Henryk should have been dropped for, whoever.Absolute nonsense. When you have a genius, play him.Drop Maeda,FFS.

  22. Never did teams playing with a target man any harm before.Keegan,Toshak,Henryk,Sutton,Hartson, etc, people saying it might be old fashioned.Play it against the best defences now and they will shit themselves.

Gio up front helping at the back as well, set pieces, then up combining with Kyogo,Jota, that’s what we need.

Leave goals on the bench, you will suffer for it.

  23. Purely on points and goal difference, Livingston would lie 4th in the league, instead of 7th. Must puzzle foreign observers unaware of the split arrangement.

  24. Fraserburgh pull one back in play off semi final. Ahead 1-0 vs Bonnyrigg, but down 2-3 on aggregate. Don’t know if away goals count.

  25. IniquitoisIV – We never had him! That’s Hearts on loan Euan Henderson, not Celtics Ewan Henderson.

  26. your getting your hendersons mixed up.

Euan henderson at alloa is on loan from hearts.

Ewan henderson at hibs is on loan from celitc
