Harsh lesson that Celtic need to improve

344

It pains me to say it, but Newco’s run in Europe this season has been exceptional.  We can make whatever excuses we like about the merits of Braga and Red Star, but this didn’t matter to us in 2003 when we eliminated Boavista, then 10th in the Portuguese league, and it should not matter now.

For much of the game last night, Leipzig looked ordinary; unable to get into the Newco box, never mind create a chance.  The goal came from a low percentage shot by a left back who moments before mis-controlled the ball to let it run out of play.

Leipzig, though, are anything but ordinary.  Defeat to two late goals by Union Berlin on Saturday was their only reversal in 17 outings, a run that includes wins away over Atalanta, Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad. They remain favourites to progress to the final, but the game did not go to plan for the Germans and their place in the final is not assured.

Four years ago today we beat Newco 5-0 to win the league on our way to being the first Scottish team to retain the treble.  That day, that season, was enormous fun, but it was one in a long line of seasons when Celtic were not pushed.  Strategically, that treble did less for us than I hope the Scottish Cup semi-final defeat two weeks ago will do.  You and I now know we need to improve for next season.

To win this league we will need to better a team who reached a European semi-final.  If we do, it would be a remarkable achievement for a new manager and overwhelmingly new playing squad.  For the remainder of this season and almost certainly next season, we face-off against a very competitive outfit for a Champions League bounty that would be transformational to whoever wins.

Good morning from a grey and damp Village.

Sitting primed and ready for my 8am pick-up. Took me ages to get to sleep last night. I remember as a wee 11 year-old being unable to sleep the night before the 1965 Cup Final v Dunfermline. And here I am 57 years later still counting sheep on the eve of a massive game.

Carlo Ancelotti has now won the league title in Spain, France, Italy, England and Germany. That is some achievement.

  16. Interesting to see what changes from the semi final Ange makes to the midfield and to our approach to the game today.

  17. onenightinlisbon on

High intensity right from the start Celtic, early goal and then blow them away.

Ensure that Beaton has no influence on the outcome.

God bless Ange and the Bhoys, stay safe lads.

  18. Saint Stivs on

changes in personnel aye mibbies, , but formation and system same again.

trust the players to do what they are best at, fast accurate one/two touch passes and shoot low and hard,

only lesson needed from hampden is dont let them get close enough to foul you (given or not they were fouls), if you turn into space, tom, rio, maeda, kyogo, dont try accelerating away, just pass the ball into the big space and let jota or whoever chase it down.

watched a ref blogger describe lunstum as commiting 6 fouling offenses, 3 of which were at least yellow cards, and he should have been off the park within a half hour.

the huns didnt beat us, the ref did.

and again, if mcgregor is in goal , shoot fast, hard and low to his left, if it opens up compose yourself and shoot there,

in the weirdest of ways, i dont get nerves for this game anymore, i dont dwell on it or worry about it, or fret on what could go wrong, its just another game, 3 point and a league title are there for the taking.

i dohave one wish and that is mcgregor to get humiliated, either in a hun skelping or with a hun howler.

he deserves it at his legacy.

    here we go again ………

    clap clap

Right! 2.9 miles from stadium. Average walking speed for 70-79 year old = 2.53 to 2.82. So, I’ll be there in an hour. COYBIG…

  20. JHB Agents are bunch of con men and women,I’ve always said that your club is your employer not agents ,why should players be paid over the top wages when the ordinary fan is treated as a customer,Football clubs should pay decent money to there players, but fans should be treated with good facilities better viewing in the stadium,no restricted views were Celtic a Park is terrible at 2 ends of the main stand ,so seating for everyone should be a priority, not how much you have in your pocket, also outlets like Mc Donald’s ,KFC and other good outlets should be made available around the stadium, and these misers that run our club just remember the working class Celtic Supporter has pumped more money into the club rather than the Billionaires and Millionaires on the Celtic Board.

  21. We had a poor season but straight away, I was thinking: ‘We need to put this right’. That was my motivation. I love this club, I’ve committed my future here and I took it personally. If we win, I’m the happiest guy in the world and if we lose, I won’t speak for three days.

“There was never a point where I was going to take the easy option and leave. I wanted to come back and put the record straight. I wanted to show people that it was a one-off and that we could go again.

    Not Fade Away

“In this single parish (Geevagh, Co.Sligo) comprising a population of 1,000 souls, no less than eighty-seven persons have actually died of starvation within the last twelve days. Many are buried without coffins. This fact is indisputable and as I feel convinced that numbers will have to be interred with no other covering but the rags they wore when living.’’

Team is more than capable of doing the job. Huns have Davis and Arfield in the middle. Surely we can compete with thos two?

‘Martin, known as “Kano” to his friends, was a regular contributor to the Celtic Quick News forum. When other members of the forum found out about his situation they quickly kicked off a fundraising effort to raise £60,000 to pay for modifications to his house to get him home for Christmas with his family, after spending a year in hospital. One fundraising event was a bucket collection outside Celtic Park on a match-day. The overall campaign exceeded the target and it was decided to use some of the extra money to take a group of children, who had volunteered at the bucket collection, to a match at Celtic Park. The idea for The KANO Foundation was born.’
