Harsh look in the mirror

306

15 years ago we beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.  The team that night was:

Boruc
Caldwell, Kennedy, McManus, Naylor
McGeady, Brown, Hartley, Jarosik
McDonald, Vennegoor of Hesselink

Kennedy and Naylor went off injured in the first half, replaced by Pressley and Donati.  Needing the winner, Gordon Strachan hooked Vennegoor of Hesselink and put on Chris Killen (!).  It is also worth noting the quality of that group.  Top seed Milan were reigning champions, Shakhtar would win the following season’s Uefa Cup and Benfica were no slouches.

Some sides flatter to deceive, Gordon Strachan’s Celtic did not deceive and did not flatter.  They delivered without looking anything other than industrial.  Those European nights were fabulous, domestically, however, it was often a hard watch.

I’m not going to ask you if you would swap what you had then for what we have now, we are enjoying today’s Celtic too much, also recency bias would intervene.  All that would change if we were in second place in Scotland.  Winning is all when you are behind in the race you really want to win.

Ange Postecoglou will also know sentiment is never fixed.  He will have to improve European results with his current expansive style, change styles or eventually endure a drop in sentiment.  Automatic qualification for the Champions League provides shelter.

As long as we win the league and the league winners get to the group stage, we will be able to indulge on the big stage.  That would not be the case if we were to face a qualification round.  Then, winning would be everything, just as it was with Gordon.  If we take a harsh look in the mirror, results in what was an easier Champions League group have been disappointing and the manner in which we were exposed on the counter suggests no learning since Bodo/Glimt earlier this year.  The slide from topping our Europa group in 2019 against Lazio, Rennes and Cluj is all tactical.

My consultant thinks it must be in my genes. My sisters in law who are nurses have always said that I have a very high pain threshold and an excellent immunity system.

  3. Interested in the suggestion that “we’ll learn and get better”

Given the fairly regular turnover of playing and coaching staff, I’m unsure quite how this corporate memory will work.

We haven’t gone down the DoF route, so our approach cycle will probably change every 3 years or so.

  4. VAR debate — late to the party.

Do we know what system we are using for the VAR decisions?

Same system as the EPL / CL or is it a special Larkhall spec system specially made for the SPL?

Is the VAR system part of the existing camera / recording / broadcast suite or is it an add on to the existing broadcast system?

As has any info been given out regarding its quality standards — frames per second / pixels per square inch / graphics engine / geometry used?

The visuals that I have seen from Saturday looked as if they had come from an “Etch a Sketch” machine — all done to different standards and only hours late in the case of the LA disallowed goal.

    Not good and getting worse.

Spot on , Our efforts on goal are mainly aimed at where the keeper is standing . Kyogo on Tuesday an example , he tried to batter it through him but he isn’t the only guilty party . Don’t get me wrong I think we are playing some great stuff , but someone to convert the chances we are making by the barrow load would be a great help . HH

    ——————-

Legendary Port Glasgow coach through the 70s, 80s, 90s, Joe O’Hagan, used to say in these situations that the goalkeeper had not made a save, but in fact, you as an attacker had hit the ball off him.

That ability to place the ball beyond a starfish jumping goalkeeper is a skill in itself.

How often did the Great Henrik, defly chip or place a ball beyond a keeper with precision and not power, Boavista goal, klos made to look like a primary school goalkeeper in a giant goal goal, cup finals and hun skelpings,

Kyogo as the ability to do it, he has shown us this, it alluded him with that big chance on tuesday.

Fine margins ………… well and world class goalscorers.

Yep, can’t afford CL quality players or they won’t come to Scotland.

So spend 3 years developing CL level players only for them to leave because they are now too good for Scotland.

    Harsh environment the CL.

I’m interested to hear from anyone???

Especially those that have dealt with the prostate issues .But of course i understand that it’s personal…

So no worries if no info available….As long there are survivors to carry on with their lifes business..then it’s all good.

After raised PSA count and biopsy, I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer (PC) in 2013 whilst living in Australia.

I was advised that PC is generally very slow to develop and in most cases, sufferers die from old age with PC rather than because of PC. However, the biopsy revealed that I had a highly aggressive form of pc with a high Gleason score of 9. The consultant recommended a Radical Prostatectomy – surgical removal of the Prostate. I underwent surgery on 9th September 2013 and 3 months later I was given the all-clear after a blood test showed PSA undetectable. I continued with the PSA blood test every 3 months.

In June 2014 I returned permanently to Scotland. My doctor gave me a folder of my complete medical history which I passed on to my new doctor in Edinburgh.

I continued to receive quarterly blood tests which were soon changed to 6-monthly in 2015. So far so good.

Then in April 2017 a test showed raised PSA count. The PC had returned. This can happen because before or during my surgery, the cancer had spread microscopically and had taken the 4 years to make itself known.

I was immediately given a bone scan which thankfully was negative. PC typically spreads to the bones and if it does, it is fatal. So they then scanned all my organs and found nothing. The diagnosis was that the cancer was located in the area where my Prostrate was. This time the Consultant recommended 4 weeks of Radiotherapy and 2 years of Hormone treatment.

I attended at the Western General for Radiotherapy Monday to Friday for 4 weeks while working. I drove there and back every day. Absolutely zero side-effects.

PC feeds on the male hormone Testosterone. The Hormone treatment is a 6-monthly injection which suppresses the hormone, thereby starving PC cells of sustenance. Side-effects can be severe, both mental and physical. Again I was lucky. I did develop slight man-boobs. I was never skinny so not really noticeable except to me. I lost most of my body hair. I was mostly bald on top anyway but for others reading this, it doesn’t affect head hair – females have lots of hair on top. Mainly chest, arms, legs etc. No big deal. Mentally it can be unsettling – like women going through the menopause. I wasn’t really aware of mental side-effects but my good lady later assured me I was sometimes a crabbit git. Most CQNers will recignise that 👍

3 months after Radiotherapy I had another PSA blood test. Undetectable. All-clear again. I have had 6-monthly blood tests since and still clear.

It is 9 years since my original diagnosis and all good. I try to look after myself.

Drambowiecelt – A lot of detail there, but I am conscious that there may well be others on CQN who have Prostate issues which may or may not be PC and I hope this can allay some of their fears and also encourage others to get the test if there are concerns. PC is very much treatable and survivable if caught in time.

PC is also noted for being symptomless, so even if you’re at the doctor for a routine visit and are over 50, ask for the Prostate finger test. It’s worth it if it catches a problem and most of the time Prostate issues are NOT cancer.

Good luck Drambowiecelt and keep us posted.

    Hope this helps.

I could still throw that horrible wee gargoyle further than a javelin. 😂😂

  10. In modern football you need a few subtle changes to your style of play to fox the opposition. Your team are watched consistently looking for gaps in your armour. People say they don’t hear alternatives but for a start, try changing the formation, go 4-4-2 or 5-3-2 do something unexpected, put someone unexpected up front, just try to confuse. Go long for 20 minutes but do something. Playing an obvious game at the top level is no use unless you have unlimited spending power then you don’t care. There are a million shades of grey between Angeball and bus parking. For a start we could try practicing free kicks or corners. If anyone wants to tell me we are practicing these then I would hate to see them not practiced. Small margins we say? well there is someplace we could improve the small margins. Even on throw ins we are rubbish, nothing inventive at all.

Mention earlier about the Huns getting to the Europa Final playing a stickier game but look at them now. They had 6 different players in that final to the game last night. Big difference.

  11. Took yon fella 2 days after his ban expires to start the insults again.

I enjoyed mostly that period when he was not on.

If you engage with him , its your own fault.

  12. BOURNESOUPRECIPE on 27TH OCTOBER 2022 3:22 PM

I was at the game on Tuesday so I noticed them going crazy on the final whistle. I thought that and the way they approached both games against us showed a lot of respect. Very happy with 2 draws from 2 games.

The strategy and tactics to get a pot 4 team with limited resources to second or even third in the Champions League are well beyond the likes of me. Analysis is easy. I think Ange has the intelligence and ambition to achieve something at Celtic while doing something different and unorthodox. We could do what everyone else does, but we shouldn’t expect better outcomes. I’d rather we do it our way, I’m happy that we have someone who seems to have ideas about how we could and how it can work.

Someone far more intelligent than me once told me that if you have a plan and change it before you give it time to work then you dont have a plan at all. Thankfully, it looks like he’ll be given as much time as he wants

  13. garygillespieshamstring on

I enjoyed the game on Tuesday. Went hoping to win but not expecting it.

A good game between two good teams and, in my opinion, we held our own and played well. With a bit more luck or better finishing and we could have edged it. By the same token, so could they do a draw was a fair result at the end.

Happy to see the whole team give 100% for the whole 93 minutes. I can’t ask for any more than that. Every guy in the team working for his team mates and no prima donnas in the squad.

  14. Nothing the matter with Anges plan.

His players let him down… It happens, take the chances and we’re through.

If he brings in better quality or the squad improves well happy days indeed.

    Just beat livi please.

  15. I was pretty decent at placing corners into areas that our big players got on the end of. I hit a few every game. I actually scored a few on the smaller pitches, direct from the corner, it wasnt that hard really.

I was really good at free kicks, scored loads , all left footed, accurate top corners, it was all in the uplift and curl of the flight path. From the left side of the box i became quite good at the outside of the left foot curl into the side the keeper was on, but its so unexpected they were often just flat footed and the ball went in.

I was a really good crosser of the ball, not just the high floaty ones, but the alan thompson from the left sweeping low curved ball to an onrushing player at the edge of the box , no mans land, just get in there first, like henrik did,

A particular favourite wee tacti of mines, done in every game, make a run as the shy is taken down the line, go chase it , just be the fastest……….

I belive i wasnt really that good, but the organisation of the other team, their height, their not siwtched on ness, their lack of fitness, and often their cowardice, meant i was scoring lots of goals often.

But that under 13s fitba for ye.

I dont think i could do any of that in a champions league at celtic park undr the disco lights against well organsied, well drilled, international players who are over 6ft tall and can jupm aother 3 feet.

then again i will be 57 in march.

    Thanks for your kind words.

I had zero symptoms. My doctor in Australia was giving me a routine annual health check. I had just turned 60,so he asked if I would mind if he checked my Prostate. I agreed.

He said it felt enlarged and sent me to the nurse for a PSA blood test which was 14. That resulted in me being sent for a biopsy.

To anyone reading this – an enlarged Prostate DOES NOT necessarily mean cancer. Nor does a raised PSA count.

My point is, I had no symptoms. I wasn’t feeling ill or lethargic etc. I swam 3 mornings a week before work and walked for miles other mornings.

It’s not Anges style of football, that got us knocked out,it was the catalogue of missed chances that Angeball created that was our downfall. We all watched it.To say different is a nonsense.

    ———-

Absolutely spot on. I have said the very same.

Creating chances is most welcome and a positive, but we must take these chances, or at least a better ratio.. One goal at home . The stastictics are disapointing to say the least.

This is not Hindsight. These sentiments were expressed even after our 9 goal thriller against Dundee Utd.

Football is fundamentally a simple game. Score more goals than the opposition and you win the game.

We have created enough good chances in CL games to win matches. We have not taken them.

Angeball is not the problem. It is a welcome entertaining brand of football.

I hope we change our shooting boots for our next European adventure. How about swapping them for “Predator “type boots in Madrid.

Change our shooting boots not the philosophy.
