15 years ago we beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. The team that night was:
Boruc
Caldwell, Kennedy, McManus, Naylor
McGeady, Brown, Hartley, Jarosik
McDonald, Vennegoor of Hesselink
Kennedy and Naylor went off injured in the first half, replaced by Pressley and Donati. Needing the winner, Gordon Strachan hooked Vennegoor of Hesselink and put on Chris Killen (!). It is also worth noting the quality of that group. Top seed Milan were reigning champions, Shakhtar would win the following season’s Uefa Cup and Benfica were no slouches.
Some sides flatter to deceive, Gordon Strachan’s Celtic did not deceive and did not flatter. They delivered without looking anything other than industrial. Those European nights were fabulous, domestically, however, it was often a hard watch.
I’m not going to ask you if you would swap what you had then for what we have now, we are enjoying today’s Celtic too much, also recency bias would intervene. All that would change if we were in second place in Scotland. Winning is all when you are behind in the race you really want to win.
Ange Postecoglou will also know sentiment is never fixed. He will have to improve European results with his current expansive style, change styles or eventually endure a drop in sentiment. Automatic qualification for the Champions League provides shelter.
As long as we win the league and the league winners get to the group stage, we will be able to indulge on the big stage. That would not be the case if we were to face a qualification round. Then, winning would be everything, just as it was with Gordon. If we take a harsh look in the mirror, results in what was an easier Champions League group have been disappointing and the manner in which we were exposed on the counter suggests no learning since Bodo/Glimt earlier this year. The slide from topping our Europa group in 2019 against Lazio, Rennes and Cluj is all tactical.

!!BADA BING!! on 27TH OCTOBER 2022 5:43 PM
Thanks.
According to the Uefa stats only two teams have covered more distance than us in the groups, and both of them only just. Suggests something about our fitness
https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/statistics/players/
Greg Taylor is fourth in the distance covered lists and one of only two defenders in the top 10. There were doubts about his fitness when he first came to Celtic. What a season he’s having.

Those CL stats are really informative.
5 CL games, 68 attempts on goal , at that level did we every think we could be in so much of a game. 88% passing accuracy.
we aint all that bad.
3 off the woodwork, how much them going in would have changed it.
also off top of the head i can think of 6 sitters missed, thats the fine margins right there,
ta for posting

Thanks for the reply — tricky topic to me.
Not sure how the current NT would have handled quality like our CL group — just a case that their efforts would have been different from our own.
They do seem to have a group confidence and they have battled away to get a result — things that we still have to learn in the CL.
Worth a question — many different opinions that is for sure.

Very snidery — making up quotes to suit your agenda.
Please read what I did write — it may be an education to you.

In 2007 a majority of the crowd had memories of Club 18/30 holidays.
Now too many have a taste in women that only extends to a couple of criteria — can they push a wheelchair and do they look good in black?
RE..Wee Greig Taylor early doors last season i happened to comment ..That the much malinged Greig
at least left it all out there on the park….great attitude….Another poster said he was thinking the same thing….
So myself and The gent Corkceltic …..are hereby claiming: “The spot the genuine article award” lol
Aff oot. homework time.
celtic40me- Greg Taylor been outstanding since January, most improved player under Ange for me.
How the heck did PSV lose to the newclub – currently leading arsenal 1-0
Make that 2 – goalkeeper howler
Tom McLaughlin – Very thoughtful and considerate of you to share your story. Very well done!
CL stats app — the gems hidden within.
Our MF — main two players this season — tackles won / lost.
MO’R = 3 tackles won vs 11 tackles lost.
RH = zero tackles won vs 5 tackles lost.
Ties in with my view of Thursday — at times we seemed to be playing touch football.
Lots of movement but very little tackling.
The lack of physicality is hurting us over and over again.
Tuesday — SD = 4 yellow cards / we had none.
In a must win game I think we are currently just too nice.
Thursday = grey moment.
Should have been Tuesday.
Should have been 3
Evening all.

I am one of the fortunate ones in regards to serious illnesses. Prior to Christmas 2019 I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, only symptoms, tiredness and breathlessness.
Long story short a 4 month stay in Ward 16, Monkland’s Hospital (I can’t praise all the staff high enough, ANGELS). with intense chemotherapy, I was told I was in remission, I’m so blessed and appreciate every day.
Prayers, faith, family support and I feel, a positive attitude helped me immensely.
A huge change in my outlook after my positive news, encouraged by my wife and son was to attend a ‘hoot in McChuil’s. I was never comfortable being in new company, however I decided to go along, one of the best things I’ve ever done.
As a consequence I have met some terrific people, people that I consider friends for life.
As my buddy, BRRB often posts ‘you can never have enough good times’.
As I said right at the start, I am one of the most fortunate people alive and I remind myself on a daily basis.
I am so blessed.

Mod,
That level of snidery and comment is OK?
A horrid comment, but when you have anonymity
It’s par for the course on cqn to satisfy all attention seeking whims.
They are not inclusive of Celtic values or the values of Celtic foundation.
I wish you well,

Yes, Bhoys Mad Mitch is a blight on the site, However as Bankie said earlier the trick is not to engage, let him talk to himself.
He got a week’s suspension, made a pathetic effort to dip his toe in Sentinel Celts was welcomed but shat it,
A lot of well-intentioned Poster’s will come out with the various mantras, Celtic is a Broad Church, Open to Everyone, Attack the Post not the Poster, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
All this is of course true when you are dealing with an upfront Celtic Supporter however when you are dealing with a Troll all normal discussion goes out the window.
Trolls post to try and annoy people and if you get angry with them, they win,
So, ignore and they will try harder & get more controversial to elicit a response and eventually will fall foul of the Moderator or self-combust like our friend last night.
