15 years ago we beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. The team that night was:
Boruc
Caldwell, Kennedy, McManus, Naylor
McGeady, Brown, Hartley, Jarosik
McDonald, Vennegoor of Hesselink
Kennedy and Naylor went off injured in the first half, replaced by Pressley and Donati. Needing the winner, Gordon Strachan hooked Vennegoor of Hesselink and put on Chris Killen (!). It is also worth noting the quality of that group. Top seed Milan were reigning champions, Shakhtar would win the following season’s Uefa Cup and Benfica were no slouches.
Some sides flatter to deceive, Gordon Strachan’s Celtic did not deceive and did not flatter. They delivered without looking anything other than industrial. Those European nights were fabulous, domestically, however, it was often a hard watch.
I’m not going to ask you if you would swap what you had then for what we have now, we are enjoying today’s Celtic too much, also recency bias would intervene. All that would change if we were in second place in Scotland. Winning is all when you are behind in the race you really want to win.
Ange Postecoglou will also know sentiment is never fixed. He will have to improve European results with his current expansive style, change styles or eventually endure a drop in sentiment. Automatic qualification for the Champions League provides shelter.
As long as we win the league and the league winners get to the group stage, we will be able to indulge on the big stage. That would not be the case if we were to face a qualification round. Then, winning would be everything, just as it was with Gordon. If we take a harsh look in the mirror, results in what was an easier Champions League group have been disappointing and the manner in which we were exposed on the counter suggests no learning since Bodo/Glimt earlier this year. The slide from topping our Europa group in 2019 against Lazio, Rennes and Cluj is all tactical.

I was immediately given a bone scan which thankfully was negative. PC typically spreads to the bones and if it does, it is fatal. So they then scanned all my organs and found nothing. The diagnosis was that the cancer was located in the area where my Prostrate was. This time the Consultant recommended 4 weeks of Radiotherapy and 2 years of Hormone treatment.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Not often I would disagree with you Tom, but I was originally diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2018 (aged 60) after serious suspicions and a biopsy that found nothing (2012). I had 6 months of hormone treatment and a month of radiotherapy.
For the last 4 years my PSA remained raised and indeed fluctuated. I had three different bone scans – all of which did not detect any issues. Then this summer, my PSA score went crazy, and I was red flagged. I had another MRI of my prostate, and it was fine. Unfortunately, that was actually bad news. They immediately booked me for 2 different types of bone scan, and I was told last Thursday that the Prostate Cancer has appeared in my sixth rib. Whilst I was told there is now no hope of being cured, they are pretty confident that the latest drugs can contain it. I have restarted hormone therapy and will now be on it for life.
I only posted this to inform others and, for once Tom, I hope you are wrong – you better be! I have lots of Celtic matches and good times still to look forward to.
Best wishes to others on a similar journey and if this is not too patronizing go to the doctor and get your PSA checked.

, deployed deeper than usual, became MoM
UEFA’s Technical Observer: “He was excellent in central midfield as a playmaker in distributing passes. O’Riley was also defensively balanced, winning back possession and stopping counterattacks.”
BTW I received my latest news by a phone call whilst sitting on a bus on the Falls Road.

It may well be that medical advancements have improved over the last 10 years. All I can say is that when my Prostate Cancer was diagnosed, I asked why I was getting a bone scan and was told that there was a slight chance it had spread to the bones and if so, “It would then be a matter of palliative care.”
That was the consultant honestly answering my questions.
Apologies if I alarmed you, but that is precisely what I was told although as I said, that was more than 9 years ago.

You are OK, I know you meant no harm. They did say that there was no cure, but were confident that there are new drugs available to contain the cancer. Unfortunately, it entails having the injected form as a gateway to the stronger drugs. I don’t know if you had the injection into your stomach muscle, but it is worse than a home defeat to The Rangers. I will have to get the injection every three months for the foreseeable future.
Right, my wife
St Stivs I gie up stevie. Tynecastle!

You are correct in that lhe treatments try to manage the existing bone cancer as much as possible so that the cancer does not travel to the vital organs which is how you die.
BelmontBrian- Dont go the now you will miss the night shift show.
Get yer popcorn here, spearmint chewing gum and macaroon as well, as well as a stale roll and cheese.

no offense intended, that read poorly on my part, apoligies.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to cause offence.
A very humbling read back today.
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has had or is dealing with a serious health issue.
I really do hope for and wish you all the best.
And…………………if any of you could make the Shipbank tomorrow who have not already committed, well that would be awesome!
And as BRRB is on the bell for the first 3 rounds, it will be a great day.
God bless you all.
Anfield 1966?
Whit?
Oh and I can only stay for a couple of pints, mibbe three!
Canny wait.
I shall not be on the bell tomorrow. It will probably take me to 2024 to pay for Dublin. I’m an impoverished pensioner living on limited means.
OK, three.
BRRB
Awright, I’ll get you a pint!
