Harsh realities when top European clubs come calling

148

Celtic are keen to stamp on speculation for players this summer, including right-back Josip Juranovic. Josip has made no play for a move, he is the model professional, back from injury and ready for the new season.

You and I both know the reality is that even full-backs born into the Celtic family move when the right offer comes along. If, as reported by Sky, Atletico Madrid are interested in Josip, it would be naive to think he would not reciprocate. For Celtic, the question would be about money and backfill. Atletico paid Spurs £20m for right-back Kieran Trippier three years ago. A year earlier, they paid half that to PSV Eindhoven for right-back Santiago Arias.

Atletico are one of Europe’s most successful clubs, not one of their big spenders, so a Trippier-like fee for another right-back may be beyond them and an Arias-like fee would not meet the player’s value to Celtic.

I’m not convinced Atletico have the budget to spend on a right-back to make this happen, but I expect Celtic will be scouting right-backs across several continents right now. We are in for a long two months before the window closes.  Remember, our business model depends on bringing players in, achieving success, selling them on at a significant profit and reinvesting.  These dealings are part of that process.

  1. The comparison with Kieran Trippier is an interesting one. From my recollection Trippier was off form and unwanted when Spurs moved him on, having lost his place in both the Spurs (to Serge Aurier!) and England teams. Plus he was on a premier league salary which Athletico would have to take on (while also relieving Spurs of the same), this would impact the transfer fee. His career was rejuvenated at Athletico.

As per the above Athletico often pay a lower transfer fee to offset the wages they’re taking on, often signing players on inflated wages who are reaching the end of their usefulness (but not their contracts) to other big clubs. Recent examples include Saurez and Greizmann from Barcelona, Morata and Costa from Chelsea.

Interestingly, Athletico paid around 12.5m for Juranovic’s Croatian right-back teammate Sime Vrsaljko in 2019, when the latter was about JJ’s current age. At the time Vrsaljko was a regular for Croatia before suffering a serious injury. Juranovic has been gradually taking ownership of the right-back position over the last 6 months, with Vrsaljko often dropping to 3rd choice behind the highly rated Josip Stanisic of Bayern. Athletico probably consider JJ to be about where Vrsaljko was in 2019.

Round about now somebody posts we should be getting rid of the “deadwood.”

Oh, the Deadwood stage is a-rolling on over Parkhead CSC

A fine set of fixtures Paul, maybe for the first time in a long time we can have a logical and rational pre season.

Central Europe calls, Austria to be exact and the first gig is against Toni Polster´s Weiner Viktoria from Vienna.

Next up the feisty one. Never a man to shy away from anything, Ange reaches out to our 80´s adversaries Rapid Vienna for a wee game. An opportunity to get onto a better footing with this team. They do play in green after all!

I´m personally delighted we are playing a game in the Czech republic for the third match. I would have preferred Slavia Prague but there you go. Our opponents will be Banik Ostrava who have won leagues over there in the past, they were founded in 1922, so it looks like their centenary.

Parkhead for game 4 against Blackburn Rovers and a chance to fondly remember the time we twice rubbed The Beast’s nose in it.

Back to Europe for the most meaningful one. Homage to Artur Boruc in Warsaw against Legia. It doesn´t happen that often nowadays in football that players at big clubs get the send off they deserve and Celtic have a chance to show their appreciation of the great holy goalie. I will always be glad to say I never saw Ronnie Simpson in goals but I saw Artur Boruc…the man was majestic. Now 42 and I hope he enjoys the next phase of his life.

Final game on July 23rd against another Championship team Norwich City , nothing too strenuous we hope.

The last time we organised a pre season so well we ended up playing like this…….

  11. C40 @ 3.14

I fear that you are now a dog with a bone regarding JJ’s weaknesses.

No matter the hair splitting you attempt JJ is worth a lot more than your £10mill.

He is an excellent player in great form and if AM want him they need to pay the going rate.

SofE @ 2.40 would appear to have a lot of detail that you are missing or are failing to mention.

Important stuff that you need to take into account before you have another go at running JJ down.

An off the boil KTr @ 28 and 7/8ths @ £20mill plus add ons would suggest that a 2 years younger JJ with impressive NT — top rank NT / Not England — performances this summer would be a stick on for a similar or even better deal.

Regarding JJ’s potential — if L/pool want another good season in the CL they would do very well to look at JJ as a replacement for TAA who is now a defensive weakness so obvious that it can be seen from space.

    JJ is that good.

  12. MadMitch’s growth agenda is just a fantasy of an everlasting bear market .

All our buys will become stars and our team will improve and the results and achievements are just certain.

Whilst operating in an unrated league with a small market interest we remain a potentially big club enslaved and limited by the unfair distribution of money in a gerrymandered market.

Ah! but that is just excuse making Scottish cringe, wee thinking and a failure to grasp obvious opportunities.

All we need is to buy only good players for whatever it takes to buy them and pay them whatever they want to be paid and get rid of all the others even if we take a bath on our investments and even if they refuse to go. Build a bigger stadium and more will definitely come because we will be constantly winning with this win Guaranteed , business speak jargon, Seize the day, blue sky thinking, big swinging dick philosophy, the business will wash its own face, give 110% and make hay while the sun shines.

We will become Real, Bayern and Man U by pretending we are Bayern, Man U and Real. we will become Anna Delvey, fur coat and nae knickers, spending like Viv Nicholson on a shop assistant’s income. All the results will be positive, all the stadiums full (The reserve one and the women team one and probably the one for the basketball team, the rugby club one and the one for the Transgender Polo and Croquet club who will be all conquering too) .

It’s not a plan, it’s a dream of a constant bear market of growth and good results and no setbacks. And you can believe it to be true because no one is going to let you near implementing it. All those small minds that live in real worlds will prevent you from becoming the Marketing & Trading maestro that you know you could and should become if it wasn’t for all those pesky kids with their Scottish Cringe and their Lawwell like surnames

Pretty accurate considering I’m in Mother India Cafe on a late lunch.

The secret is buying the right players from ‘the wantaways ‘ proceeds. Meet the valuations and off they pop.

AP has done a great job so far, the club is in rude health financially, I’d expect at least three more players in this window.

Never mind that the world is moving on and changing at an increasing pace — we need to hunker down and do what we always have done.

No desire / no confidence / no progress — just listen to the long standing PL mantra and everything will be OK.

The T/O number will be £70mill if we are lucky / £50mill if we are unlucky forever more — What could possibly go wrong?

Just back from 4 great days at Centre Parcs near Penrith. Fantastic family gathering for this old man’s 72nd birthday – should have gone 2 years ago.

Lots of Scottish accents around and by far the most popular top was the new Celtic away.

Not one Hun top and only one or two EPL ones.

As far as Bernabei is concerned I’m sure it’s been mentioned that if we wait till Thursday he will have served his 2 match suspension.

I’m hoping Jota has got an arrangement to turn up late for training.

  18. SONSOFERIN on 27TH JUNE 2022 2:40 PM

The comparison with Kieran Trippier is an interesting one. From my recollection Trippier was off form and unwanted when Spurs moved him on, having lost his place in both the Spurs (to Serge Aurier!) and England teams.

Spurs had been trying to move him on for a few months, but he was still first choice – he started in the champions league knockouts and was starting in the EPL when he wasn’t injured or rested ahead of cl games.

He was picked to play in a European qualifier for England shortly after his move to Atletico Madrid

He said his form had dipped a bit but he had a top class pedigree when he moved on. it was a strange move but the fee, which was reported to be 12m at the time seemed a bit low. I remember it being a bit of a strange business. I live in a spurs supporting house with spurs in-laws, they werent happy they were left with Aurier and Foyth was a disaster.

Vrsaljko was 24 with 3 seasons in serie a on his cv and 25-odd international appearances when he moved to Atletico. A similar transfer fee, or even less sounds more likely than a player with Trippiers CV

  19. Perhaps Bernabei will be signed as a winger not as a fullback, I suppose come Thursday things will be clearer on Jota, if he is signing or not.

  20. People still on about JJ leaving????.Where’s the story? Where is the proof?.A rumour without any backup from some Italian. If the Record had written it,it would be blown out of the water. The only ones keeping this non story going, are Celtic Blogs.Get a grip.

  28. Angelball needs a settled squad with players who have become accustomed to it and who know each others game intuitively.

A constant churn of players at every transfer window just switches the meter back to zero each time.

  29. Tripper is a better full back than JJ.Dont be ridiculous.Guy has done it at top level.Like KT,a dream of a fullback.

PL was in place for 18 years yet our transfer strategy changed with the seasons and for every gem that we uncovered during that time we had a lot more duds to get rid off as the accounts would testify year after year with the value thrown away and the copious amounts of GTF money laid out for everyone to see.

Our transfer success was variable and transient.

PL’s bonus just kept getting bigger and bigger.

    Strange that.
