Harsh realities when top European clubs come calling

148

Celtic are keen to stamp on speculation for players this summer, including right-back Josip Juranovic. Josip has made no play for a move, he is the model professional, back from injury and ready for the new season.

You and I both know the reality is that even full-backs born into the Celtic family move when the right offer comes along. If, as reported by Sky, Atletico Madrid are interested in Josip, it would be naive to think he would not reciprocate. For Celtic, the question would be about money and backfill. Atletico paid Spurs £20m for right-back Kieran Trippier three years ago. A year earlier, they paid half that to PSV Eindhoven for right-back Santiago Arias.

Atletico are one of Europe’s most successful clubs, not one of their big spenders, so a Trippier-like fee for another right-back may be beyond them and an Arias-like fee would not meet the player’s value to Celtic.

I’m not convinced Atletico have the budget to spend on a right-back to make this happen, but I expect Celtic will be scouting right-backs across several continents right now. We are in for a long two months before the window closes.  Remember, our business model depends on bringing players in, achieving success, selling them on at a significant profit and reinvesting.  These dealings are part of that process.

So the same guys who don’t give any credence to possible arrivals/ departures (yes we do actually sell players),actually believe quotes from the same rags, from a player …..a cracking 2 months of the Transfer Window left…👍

Oh and we would also comment publicly about players, who are not contracted to us…..honestly some of the bollox on here….

Regarding AP — I don’t think you have been paying attention over the past 12 months.

June 2021 — AP was the cheap / available / willing option for the job.

Our esteemed board had totally mucked it up and EH was not a goer.

We were reduced to looking for Hail Mary plays from a very small list.

    So we got very lucky.

AP is much bigger personality than PL’s crib sheet had him down for.

He is much more strategic / grand scale than PL can even begin to dream.

If PL / the board had realised AP’s appetite / ambition / drive then they would have ran a mile.

The AP we have found is not the AP that we thought we were hiring.

That is what the last 12 months have told us about the guy.

He knows no bounds — he just keeps wanting to move forward.

He doesn’t know that the CL is not for the likes of us — history or no history.

He just wants to keep moving forward / he doesn’t want to stop.

It is his mantra not a cheap slogan.

At some point the elastic will snap but he is willing to give it his all.

He is not BR polishing / padding his CV for return to the EPL or a big pay packet in China.

Failure — eventually — is almost guaranteed but we might be a much bigger / better club when it happens.

We found a very willing / able guy ready for the challenge at the drop of a hat.

We have found a 56 year old bloke with huge ambitions / horizons. and loads of energy.

Still learning / still wanting to learn / still fighting / still wanting more.

PL / the board have totally underestimated his capacity to transform the club.

They have also underestimated his desire to transform the club.

He is not the yes man they thought they had hired.

He just has bided his time and is now making the changes that he soon knew he would have to make — new coach brought in and a new attitude for the youths and the B team.

High School Musical / Glee Club no more.

And he has found a club on the right side of the world with the potential to achieve them at at least put on a good show in the attempt.

AP is still learning as a coach.

Very raw at times but moving forward fast.

He is 56 but he wants to go far.

Hopefully that is with us over the medium term.

That is what I have learned over the past 12 months.

    What have you learned?

  7. Chicken Licken @ 5.16

Loving all the nonsense about the economic headwinds out there less than a week after the club had to out out a statement to the SE to announce that we were trading far ahead of the comments / projections we had put out earlier in the financial year.

Talk about not being able to read a room / SE statement.

  8. SFTB @ 11.35

June 2021 — AP was the cheap / easy option.

Are you suggesting we could / would have went lower regarding wages?

  9. MM

That is an angel on pins question.

Of course we could have gone lower. There are millions of coaches out there. Some would work for next to nothing.

And- there are coaches who have had previous success in leagues who would have been willing to come to Celtic for less than we were paying Ange.

The point I am making is that Ange was met with a lot of football snobbery- and he understands why and has told us repeatedly he understands it- but that does to excuse the snobbery just cos its widespread. My own view was merely cautious- I would and did judge hm on what he did for us not on what I expected him to do for us- not to pre-judge.

Proven big bucks managers CAN mess up teams- Mourinho did at Man U

and managers with lesser reps can win things- and become big names in the doing of that.

and, sometimes the “right” manager doesn’t fit with the wrong club at the wrong time.

Both Ronny Deila and Neil Lennon have demonstrated that the common perception that they were cheap option hopeless duds, was woefully wrong and are now rehabilitated. Further on down their managerial careers they will fail again and they will be reviled and criticised but they both know they can make a fist of this management game, despite the conclusions of the uninformed..

When Brendan came and when Ange came, I expected our defensive record to suffer; it didn’t. When we had the pragmatic WGS, I expected our defence to be strong but it wasn’t noticeably stronger as it conceded as many as MON’s team did but scored less often. Sometimes the reasonable and informed predictions don’t come true. BUT ….. it did for Leeds with Bielsa, who was and remains loved by their fans despite being unable to stop the sieve. They replaced him with a Bielsa clone who has done little to rectify that but they provide for high energy riveting excitement.

There is no doubt that most fans would vote for a successful Wattenaccio over an unsuccessful Bielsa team but they would not be as entertained. We got the best of both last season but the bar has been raised. I cannot see us having a significant CL run but some promising results, even creditable losing performances are possible and would be an improvement. An uninspiring Sevco team under GvB came within a Ryan Kent feck-up of winning the Europa last season so anything is possible, but you’ll get long odds against Celtic doing it.

We are currently 8/11 to win next season’s SPFL but Sevco are available at a mere 5/4. It is still a close 2 horse field. Hearts, despite some good recruiting are rated 80/1 and that reflects the reality that it is now 37 years since any other Scottish team won. There are 23 teams higher rated to win the CL and we are 500/1 alongside 6 other clubs, including Sevco, with only 5 teams rated at longer odds than us- Copenhagen, Malmo, Donetsk, Trabzonspor and Union Gilloise,

Many Celtic fans have high hopes for next season and there are good grounds for expecting further league progress and a widening of the gap with the Ibrox club. But there is also a widespread optimism that Ange can change our Euro standings. I believe he can improve us but will be highly unlikely to get us near any final. I don’t expect too much of a step up from last season. I do expect I will be entertained and delighted

A few legends possibly playing their last Wimbledon on center court this week and a few of the new guard making a statement too. Changing of the guard time.

Wimbledon has fond memories for me as it was as I was leaving 5 years ago we had the famous Luxembourg hedge story emerging for dear old Sevco. Just when they thought they had suffered enough.

Huge credit to you for taking the time and having patience to debate and use logic on your exchanges with those who appear to lack any sense of reality.

A similar domestic season as last and not finishing a distant 4th in our CL group would be a great result for me this year. It so much depends on the draw though.

    Stop being so sanctimonious.

When an article about a footballer’s interview includes quotation marks around the player’s words, I tend to accept it at face value, BECAUSE IT’S IN QUOTES.

It’s much more reliable than speculatiin about a player “set to leave Celtic”. (My quotes).

But you already knew all that.

Just above the scoreboard? Hope you dont have the same tickets for St Andrews next month.

Maybe I’m amazed just to see Andy Murray back out on the centre court again, barring injuries I think he would have added a couple or more majors to his record. He does have a good record against big John Isner, 8-0, but all probably a while back, fact is though if he can return the serve he still has all the shots to win games. Hope he can stay fit and make it to the second week. Anyways enjoy your couple of days be some good tennis played.

Have a great day in SW17. I was there 3 years in a row in the 80s when I lived in the Big Smoke. It became something of an annual office pilgrimage. I had a pre-tournament bet @ 20/1 on Boris Becker, courtesy of a German friend who was in the know.

Spent many an evening in the bars of Southfields as Wimbledon (the village) was dry in those days. Wall-to-wall Scandinavian girls. A Swedish girl asked how long I had lived in London. I said 6 months. “Oh my good,” she replied. “Your English is so good.”
