Hartson’s anti-analysis

563

You’ve got to love John Hartson, a subscriber to the ‘All we need is three new players’ belief structure.  This is a common sort of anti-analysis which crops up regularly in place of any actual thought.

There are three outfield areas of a team, defence, midfield and attack, and if you can only improve each area, you’ll have a better team.  Go figure.  Hartson told us we need “a central defender; a creative midfield player and a striker”.  It’s as though the reality hasn’t occurred that any team in the world wouldn’t improve with the addition of a better player in each area of the field.

Yes, we need a central defender, but we need a right back too.  We need a striker, but, I could argue two strikers would be handy.  I’ve no idea how Brendan Rodgers is planning to play tactically so we might need a midfielder.  Or two.

Pretty much every team in Europe will be having the same conversation right now.  John could usefully reflect that it’s not actual headcount we need, we have the numbers, it’s players able to improve the team we need.  That’s the magic ingredient everyone in the game hopes for.

Lincoln Red Imps captain, Roy Chipolina, is well within his rights to talk up their chances of knocking Celtic out of the Champions League.  They hold the lead and it will take three goals to settle nerves among the home support tomorrow.  It could be a tense occasion…….

  1. Rangers are nothing to worry about? It’s this kind of arrogance that has lead us to where we are. Rangers strolled the league last year and the way Hearts adapted suggested the step up isn’t too big. They have a decent manager and have brought in a couple of experienced players. They beat us last time they played us and will probably improve.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think they’re a great side – far from it and we have brought in a decent manager ourselves and if he’s given the right tools, we’ll take the title with room to spare.

However, let’s get our own house in order before we start to mock….we’ve had egg on our faces too many times from average Rangers sides but with the head start we’ve had, this one would hurt most.

  2. Lidl — Small limited supermarket with a jumble sale down the middle.

Most of their exotic offers are available elsewhere on the high street if you look long enough.

However I have yet to find a unicycle which they had on offer a couple of years ago.

That is only half the story — they sold out in Kil’toon.

Yet to see anyone cycle up the Main Street in one but they sold out.

Could have been a passing circus mind you.

We have just lost first leg C/L qualifier to a semi pro team, as you say head down!! for Brendan et al lots of hard work to be done on the training ground coupled with some quality transfer signings, lets see were we are at Christmas

  4. A couple of very good back-to-back articles from JohnJames……worth checking them out. Reminds us of what we are and have been up against. Of course we cannot rewrite history apropos ( to use a Phil word) the disgraceful Murray/Masterton/BOS connection and history will doubtless judge the diabolic conduct of those involved.

However we can influence the future so we should remain alert to roofing issues/Glasgow City Council/PFI’s and general potential misappropriation of precious public monies. Lets face it no one else will. The MSM are no more than a collection of powderfuff lap-dogs . That’s especially true of Jackson who is nothing more than a figure of ridicule but lacks the intellect to realise it.

As I say, have a swatch at JJ.

Yes. and in the same speech she mentioned that Britain would survive Brexitt because its Great Britain.

Usual guff, and I wouldn’t mind so much if she didn’t have a degree in geography and would therefore presumably know where the term Great Britain comes from.

There again Cameron didn’t know what Magna Carta meant.

And for those who don’t know, the term Unionist in referring to the Conservative Party refers to Ireland.

Though nowadays all us non Brexitters are Unionists, and should embrace both the term, and the concept.

It’s what sets us aside from (and above) the narrow minded, introverted, flag waiving nationalists.

  6. FOXY on 19TH JULY 2016 5:53 PM

So that’s me, Billy McNeil and Bertie Auld in one camp, and you, Christine Graham and Brian Souter in the other.

    I’m happy with that.

  7. Read James Forrest article and thought it a great post, then read comments and saw some calling our ceo “Liewell” and accusing him of claiming we would spend £15m this transfer window.

I seem to remember these figures were bandied about by people in the so called “know”. The same ones who told us that Dermot Desmond had taken the gloves off because of the huns over exuberance at the final whistle.

I do not think I have ever heard anyone at Celtic ever publicly announce our transfer budget, however this “fact” will not interfere with those who prefer the “truth” Which gives then a chance to have a go at Celtic.

It was the same with Neil Lennon’s answer to a journalist, sic, who asked if £6m would be too rich for us. When he said we could afford that price if it was a deal which was right for Celtic. This comment grew arms and legs, fuelled by the SMSM, into Celtic will spend £6m on a player and all the gullibles accused Celtic of lying to the support again.

It seems smsm can undermine Celtic at every turn but for some the real enemy are our Board, and they have the cheek to accuse those who disagree with them of being fools, deluded or sheep. Strange that.

Ernie our new PM gave a precise unequivocal definition of being a Unionist, i understand your pain which causes you to deflect deny and spin

English nationalism will destroy the union due to its narrow minded limited approach to the government of the UK

    Very funny reply Ernie

Away and read some history about where the term Unionist came from in British politics.

Or you could maybe just accept the version trotted out by the Tories, tartan and otherwise.

Should we start a list of things you agree with Theresa May on?

    How about

    1. the meaning of term Unionist in the British political lexicon

2 it’s important to keep income tax rates as low as possible. In no circumstances, no matter how much public expenditure has to be cut, should you consider raising income tax levels.

Surprised Hartson had anything to say about Celtic , after my last time in the same room as the guy who nearly signed for Deadclub.

    Winning Captains…Are you reading?

I asked you to get back to me on this after you’d told me that BBJ didn’t take too kindly to people questioning his Celtic ‘Credentials’…..yawnnnnnn…..still waiting

The guy did a ‘Sportsmans Evening’ at Pelsall Cricket Club and never once mentioned Henke in the reminiscences of his career

All he spoke about all night was playing alongside Denis Bergkamp and how he was the greatest player he’d ever played in the same team with….not one mention of Celtic or Henke….

His audience were EPL Midlanders ….it would have been nice to doff the cap at least once to Celtic who saved his career

An Evening with Pat Nevin would have had more mentions of Celtic and he aint no Hoops fan neither…

John Hartson…….file under EPL misfit who didn’t appreciate what MON and Celtic did for him

Paul 67 is bang on about Hartson’s lack of intelligence

Intercinine warfare between Paul 67 and Winning Captains?……..Lol

  12. The ‘Ronaldo nearly signed for Rangers’ story is just one of many we will see whenever it’s EC or Europa cup week. With the new Rangers not involved in Europe this season the MSM will still feel thy have to relate long ago tales of the dead Rangers when in Europe.

    Hello from the Azores.

Can’t remember who referred to a Midatlantic accent yesterday, but as I am currently in the middle of the Atlantic, I can say without fear of contradiction, that the accent is spoken in Portuguese and not English ;)

Today’s weather has more than compensated for yesterday’s rather drab offering. Brilliant sunshine reflecting off the deep blue Atlantic. From our balcony in Madalena do Pico, the verdant island of Faial, stands out like a green emerald in the azure sea. Getting carried away but this place is truly beautiful.

There is some sort of Festival starting today on Pico, and visitor numbers off of the ferries seem to be up. The place has a much livelier vibe than the previous five days.

Tomorrow we fly to the Island of Terceira, and will spend three nights in the capital Angra do Heroismo. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site so looking forward to that. Terceira will be our fourth Azorian Island, and so far they have all offered something different.

Then it will be back to Lisbon for three nights before heading home.

Will be reliant on live updates on CQN tomorrow so thanks in advance for updates.

Brexit means Brexit according to UK Prime Munter…..

Has there ever been a more disproportionate representation of the public as party leaders ….EVER?

  20. It’s not about what John Hartson says.My point is why we need so many players to improve the first team with a squad that most accept is far too big?

  21. Speaking to a lad from Serbia today who asked how many titles they had won. I said none they are a new team. He did know something of what had happened and as he is still a Gretna supporter from Serbia: he questioned why a different rule was applied to his team and not to them. They should have started again in the lowest league in all of Scotland he said. Interesting that someone from Serbia can understand how rules should apply and the SFA, the media, and them cannot apply the same reasoning.

Ouch touched a raw nerve there Ernie, no need for historical research Ernie the PM speaks for the Union, now her definition may be causing you a great deal of discomfort as we can see by your reply involving deny and deflect tactics, with your usual personal derogatory inferences, you shared the same political platform as Theresa May at the Scottish referendum accept it

I take it that’s what James Connolly meant when he said “hold onto your rifles / keep the guns well oiled”?

  24. Good God, I’vehadtochangemyname, There’s not much chance of anyone giving us 3 players if that is how you are going to respond.

  25. The conundrum for any Celtic manager is to find some way of reconciling the idea that we can attract world class players to a European backwater league. We also are expected to pay top dollar wages whilst not “fleecing” our support by selling expensive tickets/merchandise/concession stand food etc.

Celtic’s total turnover is less than the relegated EPL teams parachute payments, never mind TV revenue for the season they get relegated. But many on here complain that the millionaire Peter Lawwell hasn’t spent enough of other people’s money making millionaire footballers even richer.

  26. Owen…..

I appreciate that we can’t compete with EPL and even some Championship clubs. Those who think we can are deluded and in a tiny minority (if they even exist).

However, expecting the Scottish champions to be able to put out a side that can beat Lincoln Red Imps, Maribor and Malmo isn’t unrealistic or asking too much.

  27. RUDICANTFAIL, was there not a Q and A session and did you not have the opportunity to ask him about his time at Celtic?

It’s not so bad. Give it time. In due course you’ll come to accept that nationalism is a reactionary and destructive notion that belongs in the 19th Century.

  30. I will trust in Brendan’s selection the mora night.

That said….if it were up to me, there is one definite team selection that makes sense.

    —-P.Roberts. Griffiths. M.Doumbele—

Some will site Lustig’s inclusion as madness….but naw.

Knocks and sprains aside, Lustig is a naturally fit guy. Lean as you like, and doesn’t carry weight.

At 29 yr old, and with 40+ caps for Sweden, he has all the necessary experience to play centre half tmoro with his eyes shut.

  31. Good point Owen, the MSM will try to undermine us, remember the 10M lost a season due to Rangers going bust, total nonsense.

That said I prefer to reserve my criticism for things like leaving us with one functioning centre forward after the window shutting, then panicking and signing Cole, Kazim Richards.

Zero hour contracts, poor support for Res12, leaving Ronny in position when he should have been replaced.

Allowing a dead club to claim 54 titles, that sort of thing. HH
