Has this been our most successful transfer window ever?

288

It is not like Celtic to have no one to parade on deadline day, just as it is not like Celtic to have us glowing with contentment at the business they did early in the window.  Reo Hatate (24), Daizen Maeda (24) and Yosuke Ideguchi (25) arrived from Japan, where today Daizen made a 68th minute appearance from the substitutes bench in a World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia.

Matt O’Riley (21) arrived from MK Dons, in the third tier of English football.  Matt has played one year of first team football, clearly a productive one.  His early Celtic performances reinforce the encouraging signs we heard from EFL watchers.  Johnny Kenny (18) arrived from Sligo Rovers as a development prospect.

Maeda scored within minutes of his debut, then watched Hatate steal the show and deservedly grab the Man of the Match award.  Ideguchi came on as a late sub against Hibs before being brutally injured at Alloa.  The early form of all three is encouraging, especially as they cope with living on a new continent, among new coaches and teammates.

We retained all first-choice players, with some on the fringes going out on loan.  The major disappointment was that none of our well-paid bench sitters left.  Has this been our most successful transfer window ever?  Stay tuned to find out.

All the noise in town yesterday came from across the city, where Newco acquired a midfielder who has made seven 90-minute league appearances since August 2017 (only one since going to Italy in 2019).   A friend suggested this was a classic Hail Mary move, although I’m sure that is not how they look at it at Ibrox.  Not all intercessions happen.

Later this month we face Raith Rovers in a Scottish Cup tie.  As things stand, they will field David Goodwillie, whom they signed last night.  Goodwillie was found to have raped a woman at a civil trial in 2017.  Fair play to Rovers fans for their overwhelming opposition to the signing.  They have a fight on their hands for the character of their club.

The Japan – Saudi Arabia game is due to finish around 12:10 UK time.  Hopefully by the time you finish reading this Daizen is in a taxi on his way to the airport.  There will be a good hour in his legs tomorrow night.

Good news RC, the thoughts on here will have absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the result tomorrow night, it will all be down to the players

I got the nerves this morning.

Not in the all consuming way when we played the original huns, but enough of the big game coming nerves.

We have ourselves in a good position, I want them bhoys to run themselves into the ground and get the result that Ange deserves.

I meant in terms of performance, they were both class acts, in my opinion of course.

Remember Craig Bellamy scoring some great goals when he played for the Hoops particularly a fabulous strike against old Rangers cutting in from the left and finishing with a tremendous shot to the net for a great victory.

Perhaps Jota can do the same tomorrow night.

  14. Re CALMAC…

I have always thought that those players who wear a ” Mask” are really wasting their time thinking that wearing a ” Mask” is going to prevent any further damage IF those players were to suffer another Face Injury.

speaking from my own experience some years ago of when I started to play organised Fitba again very soon after my Cheekbone had been broken during a game, I had NO FEAR in going for Headers etc, but I suppose its up to the individual concerned….. to be fair ?

In fact some of my Team Mates at the time were telling me that since my cheekbone Injury and recovery, claimed that I had become ” Even BETTER in the Air” than previously ?

I dont know IF that was true, but I deal ” FEEL” somewhat ” Indestructible” and I had NO hesitation in going for Ariel challenges. I can remember ” Feeling” that I had been thru the ” Worse” with the Cheekbone Injury, and that nothing as bad as that was going to happen again ?

I probably was a BIT DAFT back in those Days !

    HH.

  15. Raith Rovers are in some mess, the animal is toxic, had plenty good days out there, and played a part in us in Wim’s league title

  16. A statement …

As announced on our website last night, Raith Rovers FC can confirm that we have signed David Goodwillie from Clyde FC.

David is a proven goal scorer, and this will be his second stint with the club, having previously played for us on loan from Dundee United during season 2007-08.

As with all new signings, the club has carefully considered our position as a Community Club and we completely respect the differing views among fans and stakeholders, many of whom we have spoken to directly in the past 24 hours and are continuing to engage with.

As David has previously played for Raith Rovers earlier in his career, we consider him to be part of Raith Rovers Football Club. The management team is familiar with David’s career and background and – in particular – his footballing ability. That is our foremost consideration, and we believe that he will strengthen the Raith Rovers playing squad.

Please be assured that as a community football club we fully acknowledge this signing has divided opinion amongst our loyal fans and commercial stakeholders; We aim to rebuild that trust.

While acknowledging the gravity of what happened ten years ago, as a club we fully support and encourage rehabilitation, and many factors influenced our signing.

First and foremost, this was a football related decision.

    ——————–

    FACT CHECK.

    Proposed SPL entry

The financial collapse of Rangers resulted in a great deal of discussion within Scottish football. Initially it was proposed by the Scottish Premier League (SPL) that Rangers should be allowed to play in the SPL, despite the failure of the CVA. This failure meant that Rangers’ membership share in the SPL had to be transferred to the new company, along with its other assets, and that transaction required the approval of a two-thirds majority of the 12 SPL clubs.[93] Kilmarnock chairman Michael Johnson had stated that it was likely that he would vote in favour of re-entry,[94] but after consultation with their fans he decided to abstain.[95] The chairmen of Aberdeen, Hearts, Dundee United,[93] Hibernian,[96] Inverness CT[97] and St Mirren[98] all publicly stated that they were likely to vote against. St Johnstone chairman Steve Brown declared that he would in principle oppose an automatic re-entry depending on the extent of the sanctions and conditions,[99] while Motherwell chose to vote on the basis of fan and shareholder opinion.[100] Newly promoted Ross County were relatively quiet on the issue, claiming that they would take into consideration the views of other clubs before making their decision.[101]

When the vote on the share transfer was held on 4 July, it was rejected by a 10–1 majority.[102] Only the old Rangers company voted in favour, and Kilmarnock abstained. Celtic were the only SPL club not to announce their voting intentions prior to the ballot taking place, but later released a statement confirming their “no” vote and stating that “the integrity of the game was of paramount importance” and that the “decision to refuse access into the SPL was an overwhelming one and demonstrates the depth of feeling amongst everyone involved in Scottish football”.[103]

  20. SAINT STIVS on 1ST FEBRUARY 2022 7:10 PM

You expect the Board to be candid and upfront about their position on The Old Firm business model.

    Why?

  21. Celtic PLC, voted against an “old-firm” business model.

    FACT.

The Celtic statement said: “Today’s decision to refuse access into the SPL was an overwhelming one and demonstrates the depth of feeling amongst everyone involved in Scottish football.

“Fundamentally, the Celtic board has also been very mindful of the need to take what it believes to be the correct course of action in protecting the integrity of the game in Scotland.

“Throughout the whole sequence of events leading up to today’s decision the Celtic board has been of the singular view that the integrity of the game in Scotland is of paramount importance.”

Celtic – whose odds on winning the SPL in the coming season were slashed by bookmakers to 1/33 in the wake of the vote – have maintained throughout the Rangers fiasco they are not financially reliant on the Old Firm clashes.

The statement added: “Whilst the financial implications of today’s vote for Celtic and for the Scottish game as a whole will be very significant, we have already stated that Celtic has a business plan and strategy independent of any other club.”

  27. Regarding the Ramsay affordability angle:

The Ticketus mentality prevails. Pay for today with tomorrows money, what’s the worst that can happen?

    Nobody dies.

My point is there is nothing in Scottish Football rules like Article 12 of UEFA FFP to deter Rangers from acting as they do. The insolvency rules introduced by SFA/SPFL post 2012 removed the death penalty.

To add to the trustworthiness of Celtic Board on Res12 discussion:

It was ALL shareholders that were lied to at the 2019 AGM, both on knowledge of 5WA and UEFA 2011 Licence on which enough evidence was provided to approach The City of London Police if approaching UEFA was ruled out, an option in the Res that PL ignored in his response. He can search the length and breadth of the Clyde for the water biscuit he thought some shareholders sailed in, it doesn’t exist.

The 5WA knowledge denial was simply a lie to the floor.

That Agreement removed the protection against financial recklessness that is the purpose of Article 12 of UEFA FFP.

The response at same AGM focussed on an interpretation of UEFA FFP that was only possible by ignoring the evidence provided of fraud when licence was granted in April 201.

Do not forget in response to questions in this blog https://philmacgiollabhain.ie/2021/03/11/uefa-were-not-told-of-the-5-way-agreement/

UEFA said they had not seen the 5WA!

    disingenuous

    [ˌdɪsɪnˈdʒɛnjʊəs]

    ADJECTIVE

not candid or sincere, typically by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does.

That applies for sure but for a club with a Catholic supporting tradition being disingenuous is classed as a sin.

    ACTUAL SIN

Any thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to God’s eternal law. All actual sins are classified on the basis of this division, where sinful thoughts are essentially desires, the words may either be spoken or otherwise articulated, the deeds involve some external manifestation, and omissions are failures to do what should have been done by a person in a given set of circumstances.

The final words describe PL and Celtic to a T.

It is no coincidence that after he has gone our recruitment policy has put footballing needs on at least the same footing as commercial ones. The decision to strengthen in January with a view to CL qualification in the summer is one noticeable by its absence under PL.

One of my favourite sayings is ” infinite patience produces immediate results” and after years of watching Celtic in decline under PL his departure as produced results that are immediate in a footballing context.

Resolution 12 was patient and persistent.

Lets hope lessons have been learned and Celtic become the great European club they can be free of the shackles of Ibrox financial shenanigan’s which are the greatest risk to Celtic becoming all we can be, NOT their football but their inability to play fair.
