Hassan is a genuinely exciting prospect

I stay away from YouTube videos of new Celtic signings or prospective signings, they are about as reliable as a TK Maxx original price ticket, it is always more informative to wait and see how the player settles in green and white hoops.

But the World Cup was on.  And Celtic target Haissem Hassan played for Egypt against Argentina, so I watched.  He was outstanding.  So much so, that I suspected Ally McCoist’s eulogising about him was a tactic to entice English clubs to compete with Celtic for his signature.  I felt sure the exposure would take him out of our reach.  My interest in the player receded.

He spent last season at Real Oviedo finishing bottom of La Liga.  The club scored 26 goals in 36 league games, even the second worst side in the league scored 50% more.  You may remember our conversations about Patrick Roberts?  Patrick needs to be in a side who have lots of possession.  Teams who defend 90% of the season invariably employ agricultural wingers, to bolster their defensive cover.  The creative types have no outlet for their fruits.

Perhaps as a consequence, Haissem had an unproductive term, curtailing competition for Celtic this summer.  Reports that he is a medical away from signing for Celtic are genuinely exciting.

    Com’on TT thats a bit much to be accusing MO’N of holding up the transfer business TBH not convinced that MO’N beyond declaring that a player is desirable and is considered quality for the 1st team squad would be too much more involved in transfer business That would be left for the Legal eagle CEO and our Financial whizz CFO to do all the final ironing out BTW Shaun still has nice dip and swerve away from difficult opponents, that was lovely body swerve Equally your defence of our CEO is to be commended, don’t know if Celtic do some sort of medals for facing the enemy on CQN Have a good Friday

     

     

    *I NEVER accused MON of holding up the transfer business but did refer to him, or whoever the manager is, of suggesting the positions we needed filled and then left that up to the scouts to find them, then as you said let the CEO and CFO get on with the business of determining how much we could afford, going back to the Manager and getting his buy in before going into negotiations with the player, his agent and the hopefully selling club and that’s IMHO where the much maligned PL came into his zenith, and of course DD to sign the cheques.

    *The rest snipped but you must have read my mind as that’s what I was thinking as well, just didnae get around tae putting it intae words, there was also the elephant in the room, petrie or as I call him putrid who kept raising the fee and NOT just tae benefit his club but as a preventive on having tae sell tae us, Hibs have for years complained about us “stealing” their best players yet they have no qualms about letting their players leave for the huns while their city rivals deal with us, both in buying and selling, willingly.

     

     

    Also you mentioned the players we had in his position at the time, the likes of Scott Brown, Olivier Ntcham, Callum McGregor, and Tom Rogic, and the question on most of our lips was “who were we going to drop to accommodate him as he was still a prospect and no the “Super John McGinn” that he would develop intae at Villa Park, he has done well considering the manager who signed him with the prospect of first team football getting the sugar lump within weeks of him joining them.

    Watched Shaun and Austons’ media briefings; we’re fortunate to have such lucid and likeable ambassadors.

     

    Clever, credible and no-BS types. I’m super-impressed with them both.

     

     

    Re possibly losing AJ or Arne, I’d be more feart over CCV, Auston or Scalesy leaving; all great – not perfect – defenders.

    25 years this was when our club had ambition and went all out to qualify for the CL.

     

     

    In more recent times whem we have faced far smaller and inferior sides 7 failures from 9 we all know how and why and it is simply not acceptable get us back to were we belong.

    Wow the 🐛🪱 were doing a sterling job of defending the indefensible last night, well done chaps Peter will be proud.

     

     

    In the meantime I’m looking forward to Ralston at right back and big Scales at left back it’s definitely the way forward for us to qualify for European football. Why were we worried when the players we needed were already in place?

    Not only have we sorted the first eleven over night but we’ve also found out that we have a fantastic CEO!!

    On young player development, it is certainly not easy when we need to win every game or protests erupt, but we need to do better. I am slightly worried that having bought two strikers, Osmand is now going to find game time very difficult to get.

     

     

    And the B league is hopeless. A few years ago there was much talk about Owen Moffat, a young striker. I went to a couple of B games v Civil Service Strollers and Spartans to take a look. He struck me as too small and slight, and very easily dispossessed. A large, very Celtic-minded family were there supporting him, so I was sorry he never made it – he’s at Morton now I think.

     

     

    But I got a surprise watching a strong, fast winger (like Yang with better end product). It was Rocco Vata. Given how weak we were at right wing at the time (JF very hit and miss) I was amazed he couldn’t get in the team. BR was being cautious with him (and BR knows a lot more about football than I do, so no criticism there). But he really struck me as first team material.

     

     

    Anyway, he’s at Watford and hasn’t really set the sky alight. The transition from playing against amateur teams and then stepping up to play Premier League and European football, or English football, is massive. One answer seems to be loan them out to Scottish Premier League teams for a season, if we can. Some clubs object to this (Aberdeen fans rebelled after Scales and Christie were loaned and taken back as better players), but others will surely take our good players such as Donovan, McArdle etc. There was an option for Murray this season of course.

     

     

    Just some musings. It’s not just Celtic of course; all teams facing European football struggle to bring forward young players. There is also the issue that the really good ones get cherry-picked at 15/16 by Liverpool etc.; and they get to rot in their academies rather than ours.

     

     

    But the point remains that we need to offer these kids some kind of road map to the first team. That was why we brought Shaun back in the first place. If we can’t, we are wasting their time, and also wasting the club’s resources on an academy with no real end product.
