Have no part of Ibrox farce

305

A constituency within Newco had enough of Celtic fans turning Ibrox into a party venue.  They decided an arrangement, that has been in place when Celtic visit Ibrox for longer than the host club has been in existence, had to stop, and convinced Newco to do their bidding.  Celtic were offered 700 tickets, an arrangement they reciprocated.

This is a farce, it is inherently unsafe, it incurs disproportionate police costs and Celtic should have no part of it.  Tell them the normal allocation of 7,500 tickets for visiting fans should be issued, or there should be no visiting fans whatsoever.

Celtic have an open invitiation to accomodate 7,500 fans or to reciprocate at a lower number.  In effect, this is a passive stance, ceeding the decision to one of Newco’s pressure groups.  It is time to take control, either there should be no visiting fans or a safe and appropriate number.  We cannot allow Scottish football to be ragdoll-ed by an angry fringe any longer.  I would be happy if we never saw them inside Celtic Park again.

Whit bit am a no getting ? It’s easier to police 7500 bigots than 700 ?

    ==================================

I think it is more of the scale of the police presence, and scale of associated disruption, required to only enable 700 to attend.

Last few times we went to Ibrox, the police operation / segregation they were able to put – in part because we had the whole end – was easier because they could channel all Huns fans away from the full Broomloan Road end of the ground. Going in and out of the stadium you could hardly see a Hun fan, other than across the police cordon (vans, horses, large crowd-control barriers) that went all the way down Edmiston Drive and Shieldhall Road.

With smaller numbers, the Huns need to get access to most of the turnstiles in the Broomloan Road end, so it is, logistically, much, much more difficult to put in the necessary cordons to keep the two groups of fans separate. That’s why they are doing the ‘away fans need to arrive 1-2 hours before the game’ arrangement – segregation before the game would be virtually impossible.

I’m assuming that’s the same issue down at the Sprinfield end at Celtic Park, but I’m in the Jock Stein, so haven’t seen it myself.

It might have been a bit more apropos Paul to have written this particular thought for the day this time last week but then again that could have been interpreted as having been critical of the Board. Speech is silver and aw that as Rabbie was never wont to say. And as An Tearmann and others have already pointed out the policy was initiated by Dave King as a means of getting more money up front from the angry hordes than about about the Bhoys celebrating at Ayebrokes. Of course you could always argue for an 18 club SPL with just two ‘Old Firm’ (intellectual property rights intact) which would reduce the problem by half overnight, but that would not go down too well either. On a golf course far away….

    Keep them out.

Have nothing to do with them at all.

As fans we get zero benefit from any association with them, they hate our very being, football has very little to do with their lanutic fanbase. (not all of them)

  7. There is time to get this situation sorted. I’m sure Michael Nicholson is ‘on the case’. He will be waiting for the conclusion of reports into incidents at both grounds and feedback from the police and the football authorities. There must be a change in direction now, lest we allow regular trouble to again be the norm inside stadia.

If both Celtic/TRFC make it to CL Groups, Celtic earn roughly £5m more (depends on performance)

Add £5m season ticket capacity advantage and far superior commercials, and you are looking at a £10m+ revenue advantage for Celtic, minimum, next season

    That’s best case for TRFC

I don’t think we will move on that many players.

still in development;- Scales, Welsh, Uroghide, Robertson

    —-

Thanks fella but don’t see it with Scales – 24 at the start of next season. Will be 3rd in line behind back-up LB Taylor and a new LB.

Welsh, as shown in cup semi, is just too wee and not trusted for Ange’s system of play. Will get pushed further back with a CH purchased in summer.

Uroghide has all the athleticism but a poor footballer. Like Shaw, not an Ange pick.

Robertson is a maybe but not convinced.

Forrest as a RW? Big signs of regression (I loved the guy) but wingers at 31 years old. No chance. Aberdeen player this time next year. Julien I liked but don’t feel Ange shares the love.

McCarthy is just a bad joke of a signing. We’ll pick up his wages as he plays out his last days at Hibs.

I think we’ll see big changes again. Exciting and no time for sentimentality.

There is no ‘strict liability’ in Scottish Football, the clubs voted against it hence the behavioural differences. There is no direct punishment handed down to clubs. Sadly only a fatality on one of these occasions will prompt strong and immediate action from the police & others.

We have problems with elements of our support, mostly at away matches, but also at times in Celtic Park. This will always be used to ‘even up’ the debate – the “one’s as bad as the other” is the starting point for all authority & media involvement. Holyrood also used the ‘evening up’ excuse(slanted firmly against us) as the basis of the now discredited Offensive Behaviour legislation.

Finally, supposing we get to the stage where opposing fans are banned solely from Celtic vs Rangers matches alone – how will this look to UEFA, and will they do anything in response? That’s why a negotiated settlement is the best option. The fact that both clubs have a high percentage of their grounds sold out to season tickets is a good starting point, and gives cover to move to home supporters exclusivity at these derby matches. Unilateral action by Celtic is not the answer here.

  12. See Big Craig Gordon got the writers player of year..good goalie but had a habit of dragging rest of team into it when he made a howler..

  13. Ban away fans for safety reasons for the Derby games. Tell Sevco that we dont want tickets for the safety of our fans

That must be code for a cell of sleeper agents to do their worst.

Not sure for / against whom — but it must be a signal for something.

You need to have read the book.

  15. Unsavoury incidents may happen at other football grounds in the UK, however what we’re again experiencing here in Scotland is the direct result of a

societal disfunction that never goes away. A deep-rooted sectarian/racist open-wound that has been festering for one hundred and sixty years.

Let’s not kid ourselves that this is a football problem.

  16. I don’t know what the answer is. I’m too old to deal with the hatred at ibrox these days and I could do without being hit by coins or have to watch them behave like animals around my kids when they come to ours. But if I was younger man I wouldn’t want to miss out seeing us beat them in their midden, we all have vivid memories of famous victories there. I think a total ban makes a return to decent allocations less likely. But I understand that’s because of how unreasonable the Huns are these days.

This isn’t without precedent. The big 3 clubs in Istanbul banned away fans for derbies for 5 years. It took a show of solidarity against an attempted coup to bring an end to it. Not likely anytime soon in Glasgow

  21. Tom McLaughlin on

The SPFL rules state that clubs must allow admission to a “reasonable” number of away supporters as agreed between the two clubs.

If Celtic and Rangers were to agree that no away fans will be allowed at either stadium, would that cover the existing rule?

    My guess would be yes.

    Worth a try surely.

In 1977 the Socialist Worker produced a special edition of the paper for the silver jubilee. The entire front page was given over to the words…

    STUFF THE JUBILEE

…in huge red & blue letters on a white background under the usual red masthead.

I had the pleasure of selling it in pubs in Motherwell Town Centre, including what was then The Crown where I was told to fornicate off a few times before selling one to a lady who didn’t have time to pay me before I was manhandled out the door. Happily I had time to tell her to keep the paper free of charge.

I still bear a grudge. I was doing my final exams at Strathclyde Uni and living in a flat in Ralston. I arrived in plenty of time for my 9 a.m. exam start only to find that the police were blocking anyone from crossing George Square because she was due to arrive sometime soon, apparently. I came close to being arrested for telling the cops I had an exam to sit, but was eventually let through and for the first time in my life, I was late for an exam. I might not have been let in to sit it except they had heard the same story from so many arriving late. I think we were even allowed an extension to the 3 hours to compensate.

Anyway, I have hated jubilees ever since- hope this is the last one. Charles should be dead before he ever gets a 25th Jubilee and I’ll be died before the next guy gets one, if we haven’t seen Republican sense by then.
