Have yourself a troubled night in Glasgow

1188

With Lionel Messi and Barcelona focussed on winning their final group game against Benfica tomorrow night Celtic must achieve a better result against Spartak Moscow than Benfica manage at the Camp Nou to progress to the latter stages of the Champions League.

Aiden McGeady has suffered a recurrence of a pennate muscle tendon injury and is doubtful.  Georgian creative midfielder, Jano Ananidze, is also out injured, while coach Valery Karpin is under pressure to axe Argentine defenders Juan Insaurralde and Nicolas Pareja after both picked up red cards on Friday night against Zenit.  The Russian media have also turned on Dutch midfielder Demy De Zeeuw, who was at least partially culpable for the Zenit defeat.  Celtic could face a more cohesive Russian team tomorrow, although perhaps without some of their more talented players. Who this troubles most remains to be seen.

Reading (and writing) Celtic Quick News you learn of the thousands of actions Celtic fans take in order to assist others or alleviate pain and distress.  In aggregate these actions can and do move mountains.

Yesterday it was announced that one of our family, Rod Stewart, is donating proceeds of his new single, Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas, to the Celtic Charity Fund and Teenage Cancer Trust to fight this horrible disease and assist those afflicted by it.

The single will be available for download from this Sunday, 9 December.  It offers you and me the opportunity to raise awareness – and funds – on a level we would otherwise never be able to achieve.  Charity is part of your job as a Celtic fan.  On this occasion, on aggregate, we can have an enormous impact.

Still looking for tickets for tomorrow night?

You can email an auction bid for two Wee Oscar Write Bands, each comes with a free ticket to Celtic v Spartak Moscow.  Send an email with your bid to weeoscar4life@gmail.com.  Competition closes at 20:00 GMT tonight.

We’ll pick up on the SFA president once the more important matters are out of the way.

  1. Steinreignedsupreme,

I kinda agree about whats going on in Spain.

But I think that tomorrow night out of all nights we can allow ourselves a wee flick over to our preferred live score website to see whats happening.

Like it or not, the other game will go a long way to decide our post Xmas tourney.

I feel quite famous now, being qouted on a Russian web site.

“Gordon_J backing Neil Lennon надеется на лучшее:

Будем надеяться, что нестабильность «Спартака» никуда не денется. Новые тренеры, как правило, могут приподнять боевой дух команды.”

Not too sure what I said though …

I think we have to concentrate on taking care of our own business – and I am certain Celtic will do that – as we can do nothing about the outcome of the other match … unless we win of course.

Still, we would all have settled for this scenario when the draw was made.

So leaving out four of our top players is your way forward?

In a game as important as this one?

Blinkin’ flip, any team needs continuity of personnel to improve, subject to the occasional injury or loss of form.

Dropping four players, bringing in new faces, everyone having to adapt to a new system as a result,is a quick way to the poor-house.

hat last line,at least, should strike a chord with you.

There may be a bit of fine-tuning required. I agree with you there. But no more than that.

    I agree too.

Packed SPL defences are happy to sit tight as long as we pass the ball around in front of them.

We need someone like Paddy or Dylan to beat a few men in the final third, which induces panic in packed defences, leading to lapses in concentration and mistakes.

  9. Kojo, earlier on you were banging on about going for goals in case both ourselves & Benefica both win. I trust that the mighty Kojo knows that all the goals in the world will do us no good if Benefica win.

  10. Ernie, a show trial before a selection of the craziest Internet Bampots would be a good way to proceed.

Dylan was really successful last season in the Under-20s team in the NewGen competition – playing in central midfield. He’s now been shunted to the wing, like Naka and Aidan. Surely your most creative player should be involved as much as possible – in midfield rather than on the flanks.

The four you wish to omit have largely been first picks this season.

Tomorrow is not the occasion for buggering about wi selections just because you have been touting the names of possible replacements on your school satchel.

  18. Yep Gene, that is the team I’d expect Lenny to name. A possibility that Izzy might get the nod over Matthews if Lenny considers him ready for the game. We can’t go gung ho tomorrow either. Spartak are good on the counter attack and if they grab one early it will change the entire dynamic of the night. We need to start cautiously and sound out what they are bringing to the table. There will be time enough for throwing the kitchen sink at them later in the game, if needs be.
