Having Scott Brown in your corner

395

Over the weekend, Erik Sviatchenko spoke about Scott Brown as Celtic’s “fine minister” as the captain had authority to fine players who broke discipline.  In Erik’s instance, it was lateness.  Scott Brown has been Celtic’s first line of discipline since Neil Lennon’s first period in charge.  Young players were led by example, as more experienced players were given clear guidance of what was expected from them as a Celtic player.

Reprimanding a player for hitching a ride on a buggy intended for an injured colleague, as I once witnessed, requires oceans of respect from players and coaches alike.  This takes pressure off the manager, who can ration his use of discipline for more select matters, when its rarity has more effect.

Controlling a squad of several dozen well-paid athletes is a challenge when results are not going your way and there are campaigns against the manager.  Players cultivate all the wrong feelings when reading social media and pester their agents.  At these times, the manager’s voice can lose effect.  Scott Brown could not prevent our collapse this season but you do not need to think too hard to figure how heavily Neil Lennon and John Kennedy have relied on him.  Not that you will hear any of this from Scott.  I would have him in my corner before anyone else in football.

Agreed but I think we’ve also been failed by the lack of fitness and professionalism shown by Griff. At least Eddie can get himself on the field to play 90 minutes, even if he hasn’t been at his best.

Griff is arguably the best natural finisher we’ve had since Larsson left and towards the end of last season formed a great partnership with Eddie.

How different would our games have turned out if we’d had a fit Griff that could play 90 minutes most weeks? Hard to say but the season was showing early signs of unraveling when he turned up unfit and overweight.

Very true and in a season where fitness was going to be key, how many on here thought that our squad would be the deciding factor?

I certainly thought going into the season that there wasn’t much between us and Sevco’s first eleven but that our depth would see us through. How wrong could someone be?

  3. I hope the new manager gives Karamoko a chance.

The lad is 18 and looks a wonderful talent but he needs games to progress, imo.

I wonder how Isalm Feruz would have faired if he’d stayed with us.

Is he on the scrap heap?

  4. Play me or else! – Conor Hazard.

Surely the tail wagging the dog?

    Beat it son.

  5. Deniabhoy,

I often wondered if the long break affected is more, much like having a hectic week at work and you are non stop and don’t have time to rest and it’s only at the weekend that you realise how gubbed you are.

My other train of thought is that the pre season wasn’t tailored properly. Previous pre seasons would have been “topping up” current high fitness levels due to the short break. Players and managers talk about getting the pre-season training done then all the training through the season is just helping you “tick over”. If our pre-season regime didn’t get us to peak level we’d have struggled to get the levels up during the season.

To be fair I’ve not heard a physio discuss this so it’s just some thoughts.

  6. Whèther you agree or not about going to Dubai (sactioned by the government) we all expected to kick on as in previous years and take the fight to Sevco International.

We returned to 13 players in isolation due to seating arrangements changed mid flight. No postponements like before when Aberdeen and us broke the rules but contineu with depleted squad.

Mob from Ayebrokes have 2 Covid parties, first one commended by the government and second acted on around 6 weeks later

I hope our new CEO has all this info stored away and is ready for the fight.

Start the cup defence Sunday 02:00 so is it eariy night or stay up drinkińg?

I like the look of the new home jerseys leaked online but I’d be much more interested in seeing who is going to be inside them .

If stories are to be believed big Jock will be drinking a pint of orange juice and you will have ONE pint and then home by 9!

  9. McPhail Bhoy,

I’ll maybe take Bertie Auld in his place then :)

I’d love to hear him and MON give me their thoughts on football and their thoughts in the lead up to European finals.

Broonie would be able to talk me through the 9 in a row and tell me what the f&@£ happened this season. Hopefully he would stay out late with me too having a good few more than a pint 🍺
