Having Scott Brown in your corner

395

Over the weekend, Erik Sviatchenko spoke about Scott Brown as Celtic’s “fine minister” as the captain had authority to fine players who broke discipline.  In Erik’s instance, it was lateness.  Scott Brown has been Celtic’s first line of discipline since Neil Lennon’s first period in charge.  Young players were led by example, as more experienced players were given clear guidance of what was expected from them as a Celtic player.

Reprimanding a player for hitching a ride on a buggy intended for an injured colleague, as I once witnessed, requires oceans of respect from players and coaches alike.  This takes pressure off the manager, who can ration his use of discipline for more select matters, when its rarity has more effect.

Controlling a squad of several dozen well-paid athletes is a challenge when results are not going your way and there are campaigns against the manager.  Players cultivate all the wrong feelings when reading social media and pester their agents.  At these times, the manager’s voice can lose effect.  Scott Brown could not prevent our collapse this season but you do not need to think too hard to figure how heavily Neil Lennon and John Kennedy have relied on him.  Not that you will hear any of this from Scott.  I would have him in my corner before anyone else in football.

According to Celtic folklore, all of the successful ones were BR signings of course, and the fails somebody else’s fault..

Very true and that’s why I avoid folklore. In terms of Shved, I was just going by Rodgers’ very telling comments after he signed.

  3. Etims say it’s Roy Keane?

That’s a relief. We can rule out Roy Keane then :)

  6. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers does not “know a great deal” about winger Maryan Shved, but has confirmed that the club are in talks to sign the Ukrainian.

Rodgers said Shved, 21, would “probably benefit the club in the future” and would likely be loaned out as Celtic already have “about a million wingers”.

Shved is in his second spell with Karpaty Lviv in his homeland after a stint with Sevilla Atletico in Spain.

“I think they will look to get the deal done,” Rodgers said.

“It is something that has come to the club through circumstance and he has been watched. I can’t say I know a great deal about him.

“We’ve got about a million wingers, we don’t need another. But what I have seen he will probably benefit the club in the future.”

  7. This ‘rebuild couldn’t have come at a worse possible time.

With the European Championship not finishing until 11th of July many of the players participating not currently playing in the top 5 leagues will be holding off until the very last day of the Transfer window (probably the last day in August) in the hope of s life changing offer.

With the likes of Sheffield Uniteds Aaron Ramsdale earning £43,000 p/w this dwarfs what Celtic can offer.

Our first Champions League qualifier will be 25th/26th of August we may not have a squad at all capable to qualify never mind have a squad in place drilled by our new manager in preparation for that qualifier.

    Worrying times

  8. People dismissing Roy Keane

Would we take a management team of say Keane, Damien duff ?

Like I say no idea about Sevco.

But if Rainjurz were their role model and given they’ve lost more money than them each season since their inception in 2012 I wouldn’t be putting money on them to pass the seeded sides to get into the CL, never mind the longer term.

  12. Heard tonight of someone who managed to receive 20 years’ worth of dividends from his Celtic shares purchased in the McCann takeover, through following the help and advice given on Celtic trust, he got checks to the value of £330. Celtic Trust through David Low and Celtic FC have provided help and information, could be worth your while, won’t cost you anything to check it out, details in the link

IMO Roy Keane has a lot to offer as a manager but despite bookie odds he is not the next Celtic manager.

  13. Go tell the Spartim on

Kennedy needs to leave to get better, he’s hanging about like a bad smell.

Not Keane on Roy but we’ll see what tomorrow brings and if it’s him, let’s see who he brings with him, Butt and Duff would be a good start

  14. Keane, Kennedy and Duff. Not a proven managerial CV between the three of them.

No thank you, but it’s all about opinions and I have been totally wrong before.

    Cheers and HH.

Agreed so many challenges over the summer, New CEO, New Structure, New management Personnel, New Captain, New players, that’s a lot of people, systems which have to gel, get an understanding, be operational quickly, will the Celtic support be patient and give it all time, if Sevco hit the ground running again early next season, the pressures will be enormous, it will be a tumultuous summer

  16. Forget the name and just imagine a manager who had a good season at Sunderland in 2007 followed by a bad one. Then sacked by Ipswich after a disastrous time and hadn’t managed a club for a decade.

Would this be the kind of CV that would convince you this is good enough for Celtic at such a vital time and with a big rebuild needed?

Good ex-players don’t necessarily make good managers. Tough-talking men don’t necessarily make good managers. Roy Keane’s CV is worse than Paul Lambert’s and I’m pretty sure nobody would want him.

The only ones slightly taken in by the idea, usually suggest he’s backed by assistant X or assistant Y – already an admission that the guy in himself is nowhere near good enough. If Celtic don’t appoint him, who else will?

Nobody has touched him with a barge-pole for ten years and neither should we.

Kenny was great for us but I was referring to his later choices – wasn’t he an ambassador or the like for oldclub

  18. PAULOANTONY on 29TH MARCH 2021 8:41 PM

No, I wouldn’t. If we were doing that, why not just give it to Duff and let him pick his own staff?

I’m not advocating the idea of Duff at all but why does Keane need to be in the equation? Any equation?

  19. News At Ten. As those that take the knee outside the courthouse, should assimilated racists in the UK be ashamed of themselves?

I think you are right but imagine if they had taken him as a player and Danny as well – all of which was very close to happening! Doesn’t bear thinking about – two of my all-time Celts.
