Hayes, Koki Mizuno and the right-mid gap

1491

You and I have been doing this long enough to remember this place in meltdown at the prospect of Celtic signing a player from another SPL club. Domestically sourced talent was regarded as unimaginative, cheap, even. Contrast this with the utter joy when we signed Koki Mizuno, who was full-on exotic, but built for finer things then competitive football.

At 29, Aberdeen’s Irish international midfielder, Jonny Hayes is certainly unimaginative, and may be comparatively cheap, but he’s also a low-risk option for Celtic, who will know what they could get (and what they will not get) from the player.

With Patrick Roberts due to report to Manchester City on his return from holiday, Celtic are short of options for right-mid, with the first Champions League qualifier only five weeks away. The manager will view this gap in his squad as an unnecessary risk to next season’s objectives.

  1. Patrick Roberts was back up to James Forrest for the bulk of last season, it was only in the last 6-8 weeks that he became first choice. Maybe we’re just looking to replace James’s back up ;-)

For every success like Leigh, there are loads of Ciftci, Pukki’s, etc and so on

I’d rather we spent that ‘modest’ fee on young McGinn from Hibs. Now that is a young man who has skill and guts and a lot of potential and would cost about the same as Hayes only he is much younger and a huge Celtic supporter to boot.

  5. My own take on it.

Comparisons to when we signed Armstrong and Griffiths are specious nonsense. Both were players of outstanding potential. Hayes will 30 by the time the season starts.

Hes’ squad filler. If he’s being signed as squad filler fine. But as a replacement for Roberts? A player capable of being world class? Re-adjust expectations accordingly.

Because that’s an insult, however it’s dressed up and whoever is doing the dressing.

Cifti to me was a rotund Turk who played liked Kris Boyd only worse if that is at all possible. The only thing I remember of note from him was kicking Scott Brown on the head…. and costing us £1.5 million to rob a supporter of an away ticket and be paid for it too.

  10. BABASONICOS71 on

If we sign Hayes it proves Brendan doesn’t know what he’s doing and should be sacked and replaced with a more knowledgeable footballing sage.Maybe a supporter with an opinion.

It also proves the board are trying to undermine Brendan by signing non-expensive,unexotic,non-foreigny named types.

    Everything is terrible. ;)

Personally,I never had a problem with us signing Leigh.

There’s always room for a maverick in Celtic’s dressing room. The history of our club is littered with them.

The reason we remember them is because of their achievements, due as much to good management as their ability.

NFL and RD successfully managed Leigh,as has BR.

How the hell Jock and Jimmy McGrory coped with Jinky and Charles Patrick-et al!-without tearing their hair out, well, that’s management.

    Yes,players need discipline. But sometimes…

You have to let the thoroughbred have its head.

Which raises the question of just how good a player could Derek Riordan have been?

That lad had everything, but ultimately his role in life was as The Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz.

A genuine shame for him. And also for football.

  12. And if the manager’s been told the budget is £5 million Hayes is the best we’re gonna get.

Like I said, if THIS is the answer to the Roberts question then ALL expectations for the summer need to be starkly re-adjusted. Forget spending decent money. We’re gambling with Champions League qualification, again. Someone above Brendan will have made a judgement call that an unbeaten team doesn’t need big money splashed out on it.

Nobody’s second guessing the manager. It’s those above him I’ll have serious questions about.

Christ almighty, when we punt Dembele for £30 million or some other obscene amount, you want Louis Moult as his replacement?

  13. Taurangabhoy on

A STOR MHA CHROI on 2ND JUNE 2017 12:19 PM You could be completely correct mate. To be honest I haven’t seen enough of Hayes to make any comments other than trust BR judgement . I think we are at a moment in history to go forward , make history, not just hold the line so like you I am hoping for aspirational signings. Yep being a bit disengenious with Lubo he was truly a special talent well before we realised it. Worthy of the price of a ticket to watch him take the ball to the corner flag. a very special player, no comparison.

Is this a collective Ronny Deila hangover?

At least then we might have been able to peek through trembling fingers and groan that he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

If BR decides to sign the very capable Johnny Hayes, than great; he sees something there he can exploit to Celtic’s advantage.

If BR chooses NOT to sign Johnny Hayes; then great, too – he ha sdesigns on someone else to play a role in getting us to the Promised Land.

For JUST ONE SECOND try to wrap your brain cell around why this is underwhelming to some of us.

Patrick Roberts is a genuinely exciting footballer, who could go on to be a world class player.

Jonny Hayes has spent eight years in the SPL.

If someone had said to you that when Roberts leaves we’re signing an SPL player to replace him … you’d have rightly regarded that as someone’s idea of a joke.

Dress it up however you want. It is no less shite with glitter on it.

  19. BMCW – Riordan; now there’s the player we thought would be the Liam Brady/Platini figure to nurture and crown king. Wasted.

And in came LG, and surprised everyone.

Lesson? You never know what you’re really getting. So much disparity between perception created by onfield promise and off-field shenanigans.

Threfore, I’m surprised at the amout of distressed fortune tellers that have sprung up due to our first major transfer story of the summer.

  20. Short of options for mid right with Paddy returning to Man City. Emmm haven’t we known for a long time that he would be leaving! Totally uninspired by J. Hayes. He is a good SPFL standard player but I had hoped that our player signing ambitions would have been a wee bit higher than pursuing a 29 year old from Aberdeen especially at a reported a reported £1 mill plus extras.

Anyway Brendan obviously can see a role for Johnny so who am I to argue. As long as this isn’t another ‘Willo window’ :-)

We are now at a stage where past losses have been written off against recent profits;we either use or lose our income to the taxman.

And our income is more than £5m.

  23. Has it occurred to anyone that Paddy Roberts might be the reason we haven’t/can’t sign Paddy Roberts?

  24. SANDMAN:

Brother, the ONE PLACE I dreaded reading a positive spin on Jonny Hayes being signed was on this site.

If you don’t recognise expectation management by now … I dunno my man, I dunno what to say.

I might as well start writing my extremely low-key “welcome” article right now. Cause this is a done deal.

  25. A Stor Mha Chroi on

    TAURANGABHOY:

He is an okay player, a good player, but he is not a No. 10. His signing would not be indicative of European ambition on behalf of the Celtic board and would fly in the face of Brendan Rodgers vaunt to promote youth when he already has a talent like Ryan Christie on the books and a player like John McGinn at Hibs who’d walk to Parkhead to play for the Celtic, and might just play for no wages too. (maybe)

  26. SANDMAN

I posted that a while back. It will be up to Paddy a Is think Man City will deal. He fancies a crack in the EPL he’ll go, if he fancies another crack at the CL he’ll stay..

I think we’ll pony up in Brendan wants him..

    Over to you Paddy Bhoy

  27. Let’s face it Johnny Hayes is underwhelming. A cynic might say that this season’s success means we don’t need to try too hard for next season’s season ticket sales (which seem to be going swimmingly). But I am not that cynic – no, not I.

If BR can exploit JH’s strengths to maximum effect then great. But as GARY67 and I have said today and yesterday, Forrest just had his best season for Celtic and we have all forgotten about it because of the wonderful displays by Roberts in the closing stages of the season. Robertsmania. I think Forrest is a better player than Hayes, so I am struggling to get my head round this one.

At the end of the day, if this is what BR wants then I’m all on board. However, if James Forrest (CQN) is right and this is what BR can AFFORD…then it’s pitchfork time…well not quite…but…you know…

I’m not sure I had a point here, I did when I started typing.

    Anyway…as you were…

  28. Oh dear.

Sorry, James, it would appear I’m just a thick Tim unable to read the situation correctly.

And here was me prepared to trust in the judgement of that charlatan Brendan Rodgers.

What’s he ever done for Celtic?

Pah, thanks for setting me straight.

  29. We’re gonna kick on they said.

Couple of bits of quality they said.

    Champions league focus they said.

Nobody said anything about a journeyman joining.

Promote Johnston and Miller and use the money on a CH or AM..

Baffling ? But Brendan has a history of baffling signings. Lose Suarez buy Ballotelli….

  30. A STOR MHA CHROI @ 12:31 PM,

Well here’s my take on Ciftci, unlike Boyd he couldn’t score goals.

He could play the one up front role, RD needed that, we had no one close to being able to play that in our 1324.

The Team had much better shape when Ciftci played but he couldn’t bring midfield into play and didn’t convert his chances.

    Just not good enough.

Of Course Griff on the othet hand did the opposite, lots of assists and goals but couldn’t play the one up front role.

This was fundamental to Ronny’s demise and IMO why Dembele was so important to Brendan.

THE GREEN MAN @ 12:21 PM,

See this would be my point.

JH is not Ciftci, Pukki, Boerrigter (sic) etc…

He’s a Player who will do well in the SPL week in, week out and will not hide.

I’ve seen him having bad games against us but for me it was because he was trying too hard and things weren’t working for him.

Brendan will sort that out I’m sure.

We need someone who can slot in the way Izzy does when Tierney isn’t available or needs a rest.

To me that’s Jonny’s role and I’m confident he will deliver.

    Hail Hail

  31. IF Brendan has been told he only has a paltry £5 mill ‘war chest’ how long do you think he will stick around for? How can you plan to make a go of European competition with a 5mill transfer budget. I guess if it is true then any chance of securing Paddy’s services are out the window.

  32. DAVIDOPOULOS:

For the record brother, I just wanna correct a misconception; I am not suggesting the transfer budget is £5 million. Not at all. But if we’re already talking “cheap” “risk free” options then it’s in line with what I would expect it to be. As I said, I recognise expectation management now.
