Hayes, Koki Mizuno and the right-mid gap

1491

You and I have been doing this long enough to remember this place in meltdown at the prospect of Celtic signing a player from another SPL club. Domestically sourced talent was regarded as unimaginative, cheap, even. Contrast this with the utter joy when we signed Koki Mizuno, who was full-on exotic, but built for finer things then competitive football.

At 29, Aberdeen’s Irish international midfielder, Jonny Hayes is certainly unimaginative, and may be comparatively cheap, but he’s also a low-risk option for Celtic, who will know what they could get (and what they will not get) from the player.

With Patrick Roberts due to report to Manchester City on his return from holiday, Celtic are short of options for right-mid, with the first Champions League qualifier only five weeks away. The manager will view this gap in his squad as an unnecessary risk to next season’s objectives.

Yeah because coming on here isn’t taking up any of my day that I could be spending, you know, actually writing it :) And I think most people here are already aware of the blog :)

Interesting way of trying to boost numbers … not working and chatting to the readers!

As I said mate, the one place I didn’t want to read affirmation of that story was here.

And that’s the subject of the thread.

Which kinda has me convinced there was more to it than I had hoped.

  4. Anyone ever remember Hayes putting anything on Twitter which would have negative consequences for his signing for us?

Whatever else I might be slightly concerned about, I don’t care what he puts up there and can never remember anybody who was upset by any of it.

If he’s had a go at us on there on occasion, big deal. As an Aberdeen player he was fully entitled to.

What the Hell is he deleting it all for?

Hayes alternates between left and right wings at Pittodrie usually 50-50 during games. He’s effectively on both wings and has both excellent break away and recovery pace.

  6. CULTSBHOY – BELIEVES IN BRENDAN:

Then it’s not outside the realms of possibility that he’s been signed as someone who can come in on those days when squad rotation requires us leaving Sinclair out.

And that most of us would fully understand.

    Every little helps though, eh?

Anyway – why not just wait until something actually happens before setting off the fire alarm?

  8. I actually thought Paul was talking about Martin Hayes.

I’m not surprised we are getting linked with Jonnie Hayes. BR sought him out after every game against Aberdeen this season and had a conversation with him. If BR and Chris Davies think he can offer us something in the back up department (I actually see him replacing GMS not Paddy) then we can’t argue.

BR has earned the right to be trusted.

  9. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

It wont matter anyway bhoys. When we sell the transformed Galactico Stuart Armstrong to Burnley for 3 Trillion Euros, we can buy Paddy…and Johnny Hayes:)

Ive heard Stuart has told the Burnley manager, that next season he will play four positions at once, and score a hat-trick every week.

Amazing what you can do in one season eh:)

Anyone who has been attending matches during by the past 5 years will know that Hayes has been a thorn in our side. He must have scored around 10 goals against us. He is undoubtedly Aberdeen’s best player. Given that we played them in two cup finals last season, the fact is we can weaken them significantly for the sake of £1m and at the same time recruit a proven player in our League. It seems like a low risk move. I hope this is also a fail safe with regards to our intentions to sign Patrick Roberts. We neee someone to fill the gap in the meantime as any deal for Roberts may not materialise until August. I would rather sign someone better than Hayes but at the same time I can honestly say when he got the ball against us while playing for Aberdeen, it was a concern.

I doubt Hayes gets in to that carry on in his twitter posts. As I said earlier by all accounts from a close source he’s a clever fella..i guess he’s just managing risks.

I think we’ll get a season or two out of him and some money back. Brendan knows him well. Minimal risk. He may form part of the senior player cohort there to guide younger guys. See Toure for example – he seems to have significant influence on the team despite infrequent appearances.

  15. CULTSBHOY – BELIEVES IN BRENDAN:

I didn’t think he was that kind of guy. I never remember anyone saying anything negative about stuff he’d put up there. It seems like over-kill, but it does speak to his professionalism in a good way.

If we’re going into Champions League qualifiers with Jonny Hayes wide-right, then there’s a profound disconnect SOMEWHERE between what the manager wants, what Desmond says the club wants, and all the bits that are supposed to join up in between.

If we are going into the CL qualifiers with Hayes wide right, it means that the hopped James Forrest is injured. Simples. James Forrest will be first pick all day long; he was for most of the season even when Patrick Roberts was here

WhenIf Patrick Roberts signs it will be later in the window; spending £1M on a backup to our only functioning wide right player to secure a £30M CL qualification is a smart business move.

  18. I’m happy to trust the management team who brought us a treble and smashed a number of records to sign whoever they see fit.

If none of it works out then we can always fall back on Plan B of signing Big McGhee who has the “cuteness” required to negate the SFA and will not be Peter Lawwell’s puppet. Unlike Brendan who clearly doffs his cap and simply spends the £5m Peter tosses his way…

  19. Just had a look at Hayes stats there. So far, no one, ever has paid any money for him. all frees and loans. Interesting.

  25. CultsBhoy - Believes in Brendan on

Johnny Hayes will displace James Forrest in my opinion. He’s almost as fast.. Equally technical but much more consistent with less Iinjuries.

Its interesting reading opinions of Hayes on cqn…for once I have the benefit of having seen more of a player than most of the posters and by my reckoning he will be a welcome surprise to a few folk after they watch him.. I’d have liked him better at 27 but he’s not lost pace.. So maybe he’s got more seasons in him.
