Hayes, the opposite of a project, but still gave value

151

Jonny Hayes was the opposite of a ‘project’ when he signed as a 29-year-old for £1.3m from Aberdeen three years ago.  We paid a premium and knew we would never turn a profit on the player, but even as a squad player, he was value for money.

For the rest of his life he will answer questions about his length-of-the-pitch run and goal at Ibrox early this season.  For all the medals he collected in his three years at Celtic, that goal is a special memory.

At 32 he is young and good enough to perform at a level above most of our Premiership rivals, he will have no problem getting fixed up.

Best of luck, Jonny.

  1. Celtic are absolutely correct to allow fringe, bitpart and young players etc. to move on if we dont see a future in the team for them It is the fair thing to do. Same applies to the loan players. Lots of players will likely follow those already away. Its harsh but at least these boys have had a good wage for years some others in the spfl will likely be collecting much less.

Apologies if this has been covered – I haven’t looked on here in a few weeks – but the first tranche of season ticket money was.meant to come out on Friday.

It didnt and I was wondering if there is a new date for those who pay in 4 instalments for the first instalment to come out?

If there is would be good to know the new date – is it the revised deadline of 30th June – or has it still to be decided, subject to new season fixtures, etc being announced?

Was reading that the An Gorta Mor memorial is being planned to be placed in the church grounds in the Calton. With all due respect to the church im wondering why it isn’t being placed in a more central position in the city centre ?

Has the council refused planning permission or could it be more sinister that it’s feared that the best city in the world has Glaswegians that might attack the memorial ?

  7. Any suggestions re how to connect non-application for ST refund with Celtic saying something, officially, re Res 12?

Currently, I can only think of informing John -Paul Taylor ( Supporters Liaison Officer) but I don`t feel that would be very effective.

We spent several years at loggerheads with GCC regarding a suitable, appropriate and fitting site for the memorial. Suffice to say that every obstacle was put in our way to have it at the first choice which would have been on the banks of the Clyde where the diaspora first landed.

St Mary’s in the Calton was always an option and consequently we believe now that it will provide a wonderful setting for future generations to visit.

Scotland and Britain is not particularly good at facing up to its past inhumane actions and the fall out that has come. The empire is only happy to celebrate/ remembering the great war. Triumphalism over reflection and pride before pain. Only once the empire is willing to accept it’s wrong doings will this island and her people be able to move away from the racist hateful shite just about all migrants face from the locals.

    I completely agree.

Anti Irish racism and anti Catholic bigotry have been long standing issues which have held Scottish culture back for decades Since 1845 their lack of understanding and any attempt at empathy and understanding of what the Irish diaspora and their descendants have endured have created an hostility which is long standing and deeply embedded.

This fantastic song by Christy Moore provides a great background to the reality but is sadly unknown by our own and simply ignored by our aggressors.

I could not agree more. That’s why I find it baffling why so many Celtic fans buy into this Scottish Government notion of Scotland being somehow morally superior, and a country where everyone is welcome. It is quite clear to me that is not the case.

I also found the Scottish Goverment’s way of dealing with anti-Catholic bigotry quite baffling. They simply announced that (a) it no longer exists or (b) when it does rear its head the answer is to say one side is as bad as the other.

When the U.K has had a Catholic Prime Minister, and Scotland has had a Catholic First Minister, then I might believe they are serious. Personally I think neither will be happening any time soon. No doubt people will say there is no barrier to either, and technically there isn’t, but de-facto there clearly is. There has been much celebration over the years of women holding both positions, and the fact is was so difficult for women to attain such heights in the past is also plain wrong, but it is one that has been righted. Yet the institutionalised anti-Catholic bigotry within both Parliaments clearly remains, covert or not.

It’s difficult to argue against MON’s assertion today that his team lit the fuse for Celtic in the 21st century.

It could be argued maybe that in achieving success while posting annual profits, Strachan was the foundation builder of the modern Celtic. O’Neill’s successes came at a substantial cost.

However, MON will always be the man that put an end to Murray’s Rangers. Everything else flowed from that. Second only to Stein for me.

  14. Unfortunately that Hayes’ comments have allowed the usual suspects to start suggesting that our Cheif Executive is signing players etc.

Hayes, speaking to talkSPORT, admitted: “I spoke to Neil Lennon a couple of days before the Rangers game back in December. He was aware I was out of contract in six months and said he’d like me to stay.

I wouldn’t call Johnny Hayes a liar by any means but we aren’t getting the full story here. At 32 was he looking for a 3 year deal or a 1 year deal?

It’s the same as Lustig… he wanted a 3 year deal on the same money. Celtic would only offer a 2 year deal on reduced terms. His game was in decline.

He went off, signed for Genk on a 3 year deal (who want rid of him after 1 year) and told everybody he wanted to stay.

At the start of the season we had everyone from PhilMac to Frank McAvennie suggesting that Jullien & Boli weren’t signed by Lenny. Now Jullien has had a player of the season type campaign we are back to just Boli.

    Good players = Manager

    Bad players = Lawwell

  15. There is institutionalised anti Catholicism embedded at every level of the British state. It’s rowdiest offspring is the Orange order, which poisons the culture of both Scotland and the North of Ireland.

Celtic FC is the cultural icon for the victims of this bigotry, and the establishment hate our success.

Whilst many Catholics have attained high positions in Scottish civic society and business, there are many public bodies that clearly promote an anti Irish/catholic/Celtic agenda. The BBC is a prime example. The Great Hunger memorial shenanigans with GCC are a case in point. However, the bigotry is visible in all Scottish political parties. It’s by no stretch only in the SNP.

In my view, Scotland’s institutions have a far better prospect of beneficial change when freed of the shackles of “Great” Britain.

My BT TV Sport package is about to expire and I am not sure it is worth renewing.

Does anyone have any opinion wrt Now TV “passes” as an alternative?

The way I read it, BT Sport is not accessible via a Now TV pass – only Sky Sports can be accessed – is that correct?

  17. glendalystonsils on

Martin O’Neill was a very smart fella . One of his early remarks was ” Rangers are the benchmark” , suggesting that was the level we should be aiming at . Of course he had no intention of simply matching them , he was planning to obliterate them.

  18. As regards anti-Catholic Scotland.

It seems to me that the main population in most countries needs someone to hate.It makes them feel better about themselves ,keeps them distracted and stops them looking at the true cause of injustices imposed by an unfair political system. ie distribution of wealth.

  19. 15 Players, Craig Levein and Healy have all left Hearts as they clear the decks.

Good chance Hickey will make it 16.

  20. 2 players I would sign from Motherwell Declan Gallagher( centre back) and Allan Campbell ( midfielder in the broonie mould) , 3 million and they would bite your hand off this day and age.

I must say I haven’t come across anti Catholic sentiment in England and I’ve lived here for nearly 50 years. You will always get the odd exception but you’re never asked ‘ what school did you go to ?’
