Head coach model outperforms managers

85
  • The model: Director of Football, Technical Director and Head Coach will outperform the legacy model, with a king-like manager running the football operation.

Absolute monarchs are fine when they are brilliant and in top of their game. But that window closes, (in football) they are sacked, or leave taking all the good support talent with them, then the club and fans are left with scorched earth.

The football industry is unique in allowing such a lack of control over performance.  There are other ways it’s unique. King-like personalities cope better with the intense public scrutiny the head coach/manager endures.

Russell Martin’s sacking at Southampton was outrageous, whatever talent he had would never be enough to change that club’s outcome.  Southampton succumbed to intense public scrutiny.

A manager’s fate can be decided in 90 minutes.  Expectations of Champions League qualification are surely low, but when Celtic come calling in September, Martin’s fate is on the line.  Beat him, Brendan.

  1. Hey, buddy do you got the time?

No I don’t got a watch can you spare a dime,

But I got two olives and a couple of limes,

Guessin’ that means it’s martini time.

  2. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Has he been asked about “the gap” to the team they finished closest to last season? Surely they can’t expect Hibs to have anywhere near the poor start they had last year.

  3. Intresting appointment. In theory, the Moneyball approach makes perfect sense. However, the toxic environment at Ibrox likely means only one thing: he won’t be given the time or patience needed to come close to succeeding.

I also suspect the new owners will run a much tighter ship, with the days of marquee signings consigned to the past. Additionally, they’ll undoubtedly need to confront the vile poison from sections of the fanbase if they hope to maximise commercial opportunities.

In conclusion, the “Peepul” are in for a serious re-education. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

  4. Will have to try and catch Mr Martins press conference / unveiling, but will be interested to see if any of our beloved and very brave 4th estate ask the following;

    1. How does it feel to know there were two other candidates for the job and does it matter to you that you were at least third-choice for the role?

    2. How do Rangers feel about being ‘snubbed’ by both Gerard and young Ancelotti in their quest for a new Head Coach

    \o/

  5. If Martin sets the Huns up to play like Aberdeen SCF 2025 vs Brendan, then Brendan immediately resembles Scooby Do!

If a Boxer can`t get over him/herself and learn lessons then they soon stop being a Boxer.

If a football Manager can`t learn how to get round a low block, parked bus, then how long before every team in the league plays this way vs that Manager?

If a Manager styles himself on the Guardiola Way and most other SPL teams play like Aberdeen did at Hampden then how long until that Manager becomes BTM2?

Potential strikers are leaving because the Manager always plays with one striker AND they have seen Idah being driven to drink because of this imho.

What if Russel Martin plays the Aberdeen way, or even the wee Barry way vs Brendan?

If wee sleekit Naisy is RM’s assistant and RM turns out to be another Pedros barking caravan, and wee Naisy becomes the emergency stand in AND plays the Aberdeen way vs Brendan then all of a sudden it’ll be “Rangers Have Found Their New Walter” type of headlines?

What do Celtic fans do then?

“Oh We Have To Bring in, Broony, John McGlyne, Lenny3+Big-Vic-67, etc, etc.”????

The Guardiola way has been sussed out in the Epl, and in European leagues, how long before it is completely blocked in Spl?

  6. JE SUIS

Martin O’Neill upon his appointment as Celtic manager said he didn’t care if he was not the first choice.

Don’t think Martin will be fazed by that question, if it’s ever asked.

  7. The Battered Bunnet on

It’s all about talent in the first place.

    Is Russell Martin a talent?

He may well be, but there’s limited evidence of it.

Bit like when Celtic appointed Ronny Deila, I suppose.

Greenpinata Just me but I feel there will be no credible youth development system till we have a proper youth league/reserve league structure.

*well we all know why that is, as we were nearing our very own reserve NIAR naesurname pulled the plug on it at the behest of steptoe, the person who killed off Scottish football for nothing short of greed

  9. Paul 67,

Russell Martin’s spackling was not a disgrace.

He never learned lessons and very nearly ended up with the worst record ever in the EPL.

    Southampton had to act.

    HH.

  10. Happy Friday eve all!

    Act accordingly BRRB.

Also, this random time to post the article is messing with my morning routine.

  11. Celtic didnt lose the cup final match

they lost the tie on penalties.

low block opposition beat us only twice in truly meaningful domestic games.

i listened to several podcasts they last few days

    everybody over thinks everything.

    in brendan i trust

  12. SS,

Of course we lost, otherwise it would be our name etched on the cup and the sheep would not have had a winners parade in Sheepland.

    If only.

    HH.

  13. the match finished with a 1-1 scoreline .

we did not retain the cup as we lost a penalty shootout.

    thems the facts mam

  14. Russel Martin has a style of play which he used in his 3 manager Jobs. There is no guarantee that he will not change his philosophy or adapt it. He may decide that he doesn’t have the players to play it out from the back and decides to go long. I noticed both Inter and PSG went long at bye kicks.

It may be that Martin will try and create a team to beat Celtic by good football. Then he will need the players to play his way. This current squad couldn’t dominate possession against Celtic but maybe against the other SPFL teams. If Brendan leaves at the end of next season then we have to find a new manager and Martin could have settled in the job with 3 transfer windows happened.

If Brendan signs a new contract then its unlikely that Martin can produce a side that can out football Celtic. He has a limited squad, limited transfer money and new DOF and Technical Directors.

Sports Investors in the US sports tend to not be focussed on winning but on pleasing their Fans and making money. They dont seem to do Derby matches.Maybe the Yanks in charge are happy to have Martin playing attractive football and getting the fans onside and finishing second in League but winning cups in the short term. Brendan is 52 Martin is 39.

Perhaps in the Medium term they can catch us.

However, the Bears will be revolting. They will not accept Celtic as top dogs. There will be trouble ahead

  15. but i thought every Celtic supporter knows that

our name is on the cup but expired rangers is not

  16. American sports bore me to tears

attended ice hockey. baseball and basketball.

the sport iself was a side show to all the other entertainment and gorging themselves .

i looked up 49ers. huge commercial revenues but definitely not serial trophy winners.

it is all about the jazz.

that the due diligence didnt reveal the most demanding and delusional supporters seems strange.

    unless that was the aim

gpt find me the most gullible fanbase who keep spending regardless of results

  17. Too much thinking indeed.Every game we play, apart from them,to an extent,we face 11 man defence. Our record speaks for itself.Always the chance of an off day, keeper having the game of his life, sheer bad luck, shocking Ref.A lot can go wrong on the day.

    A lot of worry also,what ifs, about them.You having a laugh?.Nuff said.

  18. The past few weeks cqn has been all about 49ers investing in that mob across the city ,today it’s the guy Martin. Dear God. If the 49ers catch up with celtic it will be because lawell, Nicholson and the rest of the merry men allow it to happen . Over an estimated 100 million in the bank and some are worried

They are about to get there rightful place in scottish football back. We will see shortly how our custodians are going to go ..If Brendan doesn’t get the quality players he wants and the team needs then it may well be 49ers time right enough. HH

We shall thrash the hun next season. Eazy Peazy. The Brendan fella will have another napper to put in his trophy room. I’ve lost count how many. 🤔

*why, taking the huff since 1872: Vale of Leven were awarded the 1879 Scottish Cup after rankers refused to play a replay following a 1-1 draw, because of a disallowed goal in the first game.

  21. bigrailroadblues on

Enjoy the good times to come. I was fortunate to escape the hun cheating and thieving their trophies because I lived abroad. We have won every trophy by hard work and skill. The hun can’t do that. They are disgusting, lowlife racist vermin who should have been consigned to the shite pit of history. I know this is Mark 2 of these manky, criminal canutes. I hope they die as newclub and never come back.

  22. Weebobbycollins on

Well, the new man is now in Govan and though I can’t find it within myself to wish him good luck, I do hope he and the new board have the strength to stand up to their terracing scum. He talked of his admiration for Ange Postecoglou and that for me is a slight concern. If he gets his recruitment right, and I don’t believe it will require billions, we could be in for a real title fight. It might sound demeaning but I doubt Aberdeen, Hibs or Hearts will be capable of getting second place and therefore it could all come down to our own recruitment process. I could be wrong, of course I could…we are still in pole position but it makes the summer very interesting.
