Headcount and the left back slot

240

Headcount is still a thing in football.  When fit last season, Greg Taylor, was first choice left back.  During his several injured periods, Josip Juranovic moved across from the right to cover.  In the early weeks of Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, before the arrival of Josip, Adam Montgomery (then 18) was used.  You knew when illness was really affecting Celtic on the three occasions Boli Bolingoli made the squad.

Bolingoli will remain the choice only when there is absolutely no alternative, although he will hopefully depart this window.  Until this morning, that left Celtic with Greg and Adam.  The latter has now joined St Johnstone on loan.

If we follow the headcount rule, we can be confident that Argentinian left back, Alexandro Bernabei (21) came through his medical without issue and will be confirmed shortly.  I cannot see Adam Montgomery being allowed to leave otherwise.

  8. I think Ange is that strange mixture of someone with burning ambition but at the same time a pragmatist. He won’t be at Celtic for ever because he’ll want bigger and better-resourced challenges but he gives the impression, much like Rodgers, that he was destined to manage Celtic and wouldn’t mind being there forever. I don’t think Ange will do a Rodgers disappearing act and his exit will be much more orderly and respectful of Celtic.

His pragmatism was also obvious in giving James McCarthy and Liam Scales some “opportunities”. These were clearly Dermot Desmond’s choices. They are not yet ready for first team outings at Celtic and not sure they will ever suit Ange’s style of play. But Ange knows DD has power and didn’t simply dismiss DD’s choices. I think Ange bends a little in the wind to prevent breaking but ultimately goes ahead with his own plan.

While our club let Afolabi, Coffey, Connell, Dembele, Doohan, Mullen, McInroy and Paterson quietly slip out the back door, most fans wonder why we kept them around so long given they were a mix of fleeting promise, low-budget gambles and rarely listed anywhere within sniff of the first team squad.

What’s the point of a 2nd string if it doesn’t develop contenders who can challenge the firsts for a starting slot?

And while Vasilis Barkas pronounces that he wouldn’t recommend a goalkeeper sign for Celtic, there are at least 60,000 Celtic fans who wouldn’t recommend any club sign such a skittish and unconvincing glovesman.

    2.5 working days and counting.

So Big Julienne seems to be for the off, he is posting pictures on social media of him on a plane to somewhere.

    Who gives a flying duck.

Whilst I though Julienne had something about him he definitely has a superiority complex thinking he is better at this point than what he actually is. So do not let the door hit yer arse on the way oot big man.

Let’s get Jota signed and if he thinks at this point he is better than he actually is then the same as Julienne….Adeus

I only want players who want to play for our club. We should never be a last resort. Give prospective players ultimatums, timelines for signing.

We should have learned by the Eddie Howe debacle. Oh and our board are still there, get shot of everyone of them.

    Have a good day yall.

I think Celtic may be waiting till July to announce and sign up

Jota as their permanent player as it would go into the second

    half of the year accounts

I am half expecting a signing announcement anytime after

    Friday which is 1st July

Our hun friendly would have had numerous rumours circulating

of potential other clubs being in for Jota if there was even an iota

    of substance to thaat

Jota will be a tim by the weekend is my opinion

What evidence do you have that Chris Jullien thinks he’s better than he really is? Because he was on a plane, presumably on his way to another club? If he is leaving, it is presumably with Celtic’s agreement and probably even encouragement and collusion.

Chris sustained a very serious injury playing for Celtic. I think he might be deserving of a little more respect instead of being traduced by a Celtic supporter who knows absolutely nothing about him or his situation.

    CELTICFOREVER

I think you’re right about the timing of Celtic’s signings, except that Friday is the start of a NEW financial year rather than the second half of the year, which runs from 1st July to 30th June.

Transfer fee expenditure held over until Friday makes fiscal sense as in next year’s accounts it can be offset against transfer fees received for player sales between Friday and the end of the transfer window, thereby increasing profit.

Joe Ledley was pictured leaving Celtic Park after signing talks in early June 2010. The Celtic support were mystified at weeks of silence from the club, until his acquisition was announced on 1st July.

There is also the added bonus that a Friday announcement allows Bernabei to join Celtic having already served his 2-game suspension.

  15. Don’t get all this excuse that signings are being delayed until July 1st for accounting reasons.

Pre season started on Monday. Get them signed.

Joe Ledley was a free transfer.

So how would that affect accounts.

  16. Personally, I’ll be very disappointed if Julienne is for the off. I feel he deserves at least respect from the support, as he has suffered a lot in his career trying to stop a goal being scored against us.

Ange has confirmed that Liam Scales to Aberdeen is strictly a loan and not a loan-to-buy deal after some news outlets were talking about a bright future at Pittodrie.

He obviously sees a future for the young Irishman at Celtic which is good to know.

So how would that affect accounts.

I didn’t say Joe Ledley’s delay was for financial reasons.

I cited him as an example of a player holding signing talks weeks before his signing was announced on 1st July.

  19. Tom,

Or he could be trying to maximise the payout we get from Aberdeen when the time comes.

I have just spotted your post from yesterday. Thanks for your concern.

I am happy to report that I am alive and well.

The doctors have managed to stop any spread of cancer in my bones and I am as I was when first diagnosed 3 years ago. I have had 6 sessions of chemo since March with 4 to go, final one planned for end of August. I have tolerated it very well and have had no adverse reactions. All of my blood scores are excellent, my PSA score is dropping by 5 or 6 each time and is now down to 21, so on track for possible zero as happened at end of my chemo 2 years ago. The docs did say that the PSA score would probably rise again over time anyway and that I would need chemo every 2 or 3 years which I am happy to go with.

I admit not to posting since we won the league. It’s the close season and not much happening other than rumours and paper talk.

Great to see you back and delighted you are making good progress.

Wee prayer said for a full recovery.

    Tale care and God bless.

  22. Ron, good to hear your treatment is progressing well

Fingers crossed that it works like the last time

  23. Chris Julien going is a huge pity. Hampered by long term injury that seemed to challenge the idea of him being a fearty and unable to break into the CH pairing last season Ange rightfuly didn’t want to to break up, I wish him well.

Ridiculously villified by some for allegedly failing to adapt to the Livingston shag carpet and one trick pony Dykes, we did miss his potency up front a la Lazio and his winning game in the Frazer Forster League Cup final kept the run going against the odds.

Big Chris got a huge ovation from the fans when he came on as a sub against Raith Rovers in the cup in February.

Another thing I noticed from that game was how uncertain Liam Scales and Stephen Welsh were in defence that day , wasn’t surprised that Ange didn’t really play them again. To be fair it was a low key affair and Liam scored a cracking goal.

So the new League Cup pot has been increased to £2.16m for the coming season, Gareth Bale got that last month for doing hee haw!, and we have to pay Premier Sports (Setanta) for the privelige, fucking mental…🤬
