Hearts first of 5 big games left

586

Fixtures between now and the end of the season fall into two categories: games between Celtic, Aberdeen and Hearts, and the rest. Aberdeen and Celtic each have to play Hearts home and away, while the only remaining fixture between the top two will take place at Celtic Park.

Despite the last minute turn-around and Aberdeen’s collapse two weeks ago, we are still very much in a title race which a reversal tomorrow would illustrate. Aberdeen don’t play until Sunday, so, as with two weeks ago, they will have to sit on wait on Celtic’s result. Derek McInnes will have marked this game out weeks ago as one he needs Celtic to drop points in.

Celtic have a settled look about the side. The goalkeeper and defenders have settled into good form, while a fully fit Brown and Bitton anchor the midfield. With Leigh Griffiths up front it’s the three places behind the striker Ronny Deila has to make decisions for.

Kris Commons enjoys playing against Hearts and has not been exerted by international football, he should play. Unlike Tom Rogic, who will surely sit out after his trip to Australia. Your guess is as good as mine as to who will play on the flanks.

Looking at the last couple of games, Ronny switched from his signature 4-2-3-1 formation to what was listed as 4-3-3 on Celtic’s twitter account, but looked more like a 4-2-1-3, with McGregor playing ahead of Brown and Bitton, the two wide men tucking in and all three forwards, especially Commons and Griffiths, interchanging in an attempt to unsettle the opposition defence.

This hasn’t really worked so far. It was abandoned in the 2nd half v Kilmarnock, when the introduction of Roberts meant a switch to a more orthodox 4-4-2/4-2-4, while we looked stodgy in the Thistle game.

It also put more pressure on the two central midfielders to stay back and defend. Neither Brown nor Bitton (especially the latter) adapted well to the change.

For that reason, today’s game may see a return to 4-2-3-1. Both the significance of the title run-in and the standard of the opponent will put pressure on Ronny to opt for tried and tested.

The problem here is that, for the likely centre-back partnership of Sviatchenko and Mulgrew, 4-2-3-1 will be new to them (unless you count the Morton game as a stiff enough test, which, being a sane, objective, handsome individual, you don’t). The new formation didn’t exactly thrill, but it gave the defence the benefit of having two midfielders helping out most of the time.

Decisions, decisions. My feeling is Ronny will persist with what I’m calling 4-2-1-3, in the hope he can coax Hearts to come out a bit more. If this happens, I think he’ll make a change the attacking three, as the last two games saw little incisive play in the final third.

  12. QUONNO on 2ND APRIL 2016 9:38 AM

Presumably you would vote to leave the EU, so that you are independent of Europe.

But I suspect that when people say they want to be ‘independent’ what they really mean is that they want to sever any ties with England. They don’t really want to be ‘independent’ at all, because the notion of ‘independence’ in today’s world is a nonsense.

Now, why anyone would want to sever ties with England, but wish to maintain and even increase economic and political ties with other countries, make me wonder just what they’re all about.

And the notion that anyone believes if we’d voted yes we would be now be anticipating a Labour government here, presumably because the nats had disbanded their party, is just ridiculous.

Just how they would have dealt with the £15 billion deficit, with much worse to come next year, when the fall in north sea income really starts to bite, would have been interesting though.

  16. Think RD will stick with 4-3-3 but hope he plays McGregor and Johansen either side of Brown and not Bitton. Bitton would be better as the sitting central player in this formation but the captain won’t be dropped and struggles to get up and down the pitch like he used to. The main problem with this formation v Killie was the immobility of Commons and Richards, worked a lot better when GMS played at Firhill. Commons will keep his place despite having ab awful season as he is a goal threat and has a great scoring record v Hearts.

Ronny doesn’t like Izaguirre, and didn’t from an early stage, he’s wrong to have excluded him from

  23. I’m reading the exchanges between, Kill Ultra/Big Nan on one side & Auldheid, BRTH & Canamalar on the other with a degree of incredulity. It has shades of the start of the Irish Civil War & The Treaty negotiations about it.

I don’t know any of the above 5 but I have no doubt that they are all great Tims and are sincere & genuine in their beliefs.

I believe all of them want exactly the same result but at this stage personal hurt & perceived insults have poisoned the exchanges.

There is absolutely no reason why any of the 5 should take a blind bit of notice of me but could I call for a truce & even a bit of reconciliation between the factions.

Res 12 was a brilliant concept, whether it will be ultimately successful or not it was worth the fight, but let the fight be against our enemies and not amongst ourselves.

Now that I have broken my promise to myself to stay out of the politico side of CQN back to the fitbaw, I think there is a match on today.

  24. Post international games are sometimes more difficult than post euro games

So I expect a time tough game versus the Diets who will sit deep and chase everything that moves

However the squad now have the double in their sights and their determination will take care off hearts.

I would like to see Johansen return to the side as a run in the team could be crucial….just like Hartley/Robson almost a decade ago. A fresh player without something to prove at this time of season is game changing.

Celtic by a couple of goals today would do nicely.

I’ve always been sceptical of players whose praise has, more often than not, been used as a stick to beat the rest of his apparently workshy teammates.

Izaguirre has suffered under Ronny’s (look out!) system, but his points to games rate remains exceptional. He’s a winner.

  28. I see the march if right wing national socialism continues in Scotland and democracy continues to be its victim. The nationalists still attempting to ram indepdence down the throat of the country despite the very recent clear will of the Scottish people who said no.

But even more bizarre for me is the desire to allow the institutionally racist Scotland even more power to attack it’s minority.

  29. I think we are due to give a team a real doing. Hope it’s today. 5 goals in the for column. Griff to bag a couple and CKR to get on the scoresheet.

    This predicting lark is easy.

In reality I’ll settle for 3 points via a 89th minute Rogic wonder goal.
