Henderson attempts to buck Celtic youth syndrome

624

For as long as you or I can remember, Celtic’s youth teams have had a fearsome reputation, winning countless titles, even with Kenny McDowall as head coach, but something inevitably goes wrong.  Clubs like Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts and even Hamilton Accies have a better record of graduating prospects, despite having a poorer youth team to pick from.

The other fearsome reputation we had, was that Celtic was one of the places young talent came to wither on the vine, before shuffling off to a minor club at around 21-years-old.  Where would you send your boy, Celtic or Dundee United………?

The argument goes that clubs like United have more opportunity to blood young talent than Celtic, who for long periods of the last 20 years were locked in an all-or-nothing battle for supremacy, or the need to reach the Champions League group stage, or the next level of the Champions League.  This theory doesn’t stand up to scrutiny, though, as clubs with higher still demands are able to mature young talent through first team exposure.

The truth is it’s never been a first team priority, as we have been caught in a ‘buy success’ mentality for close to 30 years.

Still only 18, Liam Henderson has as much chance as anyone who have come through the ranks in the last couple of decades of making it as a top player at Celtic, but he needs to be stretched by playing competitive senior football over the next three years, cameo appearances here and there will not provide the platform he needs.  A few months at Rosenborg, who kick off a new league season on Monday, will give him opportunities he’s not going to see at Celtic between now and the end of the season.

Did you see what newco director, Paul Murray, did with his stock market announcement yesterday?

He wrote, “‎I have been informed by Deloitte, the existing auditor, that they informed the previous Board of their intention to resign following the June 2014 audit. The previous Board chose not to announce this nor did they find a replacement for Deloitte. With limited time to have these results reviewed the Board asked Jeffreys Henry to perform the exercise as Independent Reporting Accountants, not auditors.”

On reading this many were inclined to conclude the reason Deloitte did not act as Independent Reporting Accountants for their interims was because they had left the building.  Not so.  Murray later confirmed to a Daily Record financial reporter (not the football guys) that Deloittes are still newco’s auditors.  I am sure there is a perfectly good reason they didn’t sign off the interims.  Maybe they were busy that day.

Oh I don’t think they are finished. In fact I don’t think they ever will.

But they are finished as a challenge to us for the immediate future.

Whilst understanding your reluctance to accept that the Scottish Establishment would ever let them disappear completely, there is a reason why there is a growing sense `that they are done,`.

Of late, I have become one of that group who have begun to sense that they really are done and that the Establishment is letting the matter run its course gradually so as to avoid the `social disorder` that might have occurred had their death been accepted in the instant that it happened.

The real worrying part for me is that it is not just the “Scottish Establishment” that wants them to survive … but when so many prominent Celtics (including our major shareholder and de facto owner) seem to think that we would be better off with them, I do worry that the game is a bogey.

I am surprised at the number of posters on here who rate Graham Spiers as a good writer. I can only assume it is in comparison with the dreadful standard which passes for journalism in Scotland today.

His pseudo intellectual approach leads to fragmented, insincere and contrived expression. Were he in his early days as a writer, I would say his immaturity is obvious. That he is not ,leaves me bereft of a plausible explanation for his manufactured style….other than his admitted lack of objectivity.

Spiers is a strange one. He was actually one of the (very) few who was critical of the debt built up by Murray (the original!), but somehow doesn’t see that the success they had was BECAUSE of that spending.

I understand your concern. It takes a while to believe, after a lifetime of them being accorded their undeservedly exalted position in our society, that they would ever truly disappear but I do think it is happening now.

There will be many important Celts who don`t want them`back` but they are not given any publicity ( Tom Boyd?). As for DD. He MIGHT have been sincere in what he said but his being politic in his utterances is also a possibility.

Anyway, I now feel I have devoted too much time on them but I wanted to respond to an excellent poster like yourself.

Sir Minty bought a business worth £21m for £6m and borrowed every penny to buy it. He trousered at least £100m cash in his 20 years through a variety of sole supplier channels, share sales, and other murky deals. For his vanity, owner of RFC got him to top table, BOS governers in his back pocket and added countless millions to his personal bank account. he’s even bought the Liquidated MIM for tuppence.

I dont think that for Green or Whyte Sevco was a vanity project, they both are dodgy, bordering on criminal, asset strippers and purchasers of absolute last resort. Both were simply out to fleece the Orcs for every penny and both seen a get rich quick scam. Whyte took it on when no one but a Liquidator would see any value in it ( if indeed there was any value)

The irony there is that, they paid £5m for a business that is currently yielding rent approx 70% a year. 8 years at over £3M nets them a cool £26m. Not bad for a £5m investment ( wherever that £5m came from)

  29. Good to hear Liam Henderson is off to Rosenberg to further his football education and no doubt playing on good pitches with summer football close by his undoubted skills will benefit. We will have him back with us in July which is good news. With the football season about to begin gives us an idea of the task faced by SPFL teams facing sides who are fully match-fit by the time we play them in the early rounds of European competition. Surely a reason for a rethink on the football season in Scotland. Tony Watt for me was the biggest disappointment of all the young prospects at Celtic Park, I thought this lad had everything but alas it was not to be.

Interesting to read Paul’s previous article about the financial demands and the large amount of people employed at the club. You are mindful of the great job the people who continue to guide Celtic in the right direction are doing and are able to compete in Europe despite the financial constraints.

  30. A wee word on the Cqn POTY. Up until the time Nir Bitton stepped into the team the team were struggling and no one more so than Stefan Johansson. He was a pretty unpopular guy on here. Enter Nir; the team clicks, Johnsson clicks, allbeit further forward. He has played very well since then, but in my opinion Nir changed our season he may have played less games but I think we would struggle without him and he got my vote for player of the year. Please feel free to make me change my mind.

PS saw VVD in Royal Exchange Square last year. Didn’t walk. He glided – more smoothly than a Hunnish hover pitch. And carried a Louis Vuitton man purse thing…..heading straight towards the Blane Valley.

I suspected then and now that he was off to meet Oldtim for some additional fashion tips.
