Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

So Celtic didn’t ban the term,a club member didn’t want the word used in a forum.

A measure of offensiveness must surely be the reasonableness of the offended?

Rangers supporters are offended so how reasonable are they? How representative are they of society – reasonable society.

Now I think of a friend who is a Rangers Supporter as reasonable but then I’m unsure of his attitudes towards Rangers sectarian employment policy as a first off. What reasonable person would be able to support a team their mate could not have played for or be employed by up until 1989.

That is before you start on anything else with respect to songs or chants, not paying taxes and cheating.

The poor souls want it to be sectarian I doubt they want it to be just plain old offensive. This isn’t like the famine song or the billy boys. Everyone knew these were sectarian and downright offensive.

Hun – offensive only to those that want it to be offensive to them to attach a degree of equivalence to their sectarian raison d’être.

not too much I would disagree with in your post…. except

“I would like Celtic to be real leaders of Scottish football acting with honesty and for not only our interests but the interests of all other clubs who play by the rules ”

I believe Celtic are the real leaders of Scottish football and as you said obviously a decision was taken at the beginning of “thems” demise to see how the shambles panned out ……this may not have been the correct strategy imo but hindsight is a wonderful thing but sadly not available :-))

I too would love it if PL could giru the red tops but not sure if thats possible so many of our fans seem to be disillusioned with him

Scotland a sad bigoted little province, would have been even worse if the bigoted fat racist

Salmond had won last september, SNP known for years as the tartan tories due to their total support for the conservatives in councils throughout scotland, then voted with them in 1979 that gave us thatcher, and have never stopped moaning about her ever since, Murphys a muppet but is a hundred times more a man and a politician daft alex ever will be

No. A fine country. Contrary to what nationalists state, it isn’t the best or most beautiful but I tend to believe our poor and vulnerable are better looked after here than in some dumps.

Why doesn’t the media pick up the logic of sane normal adults by saying that you can’t possibly be offended by name calling when you’re singing is solely based upon offending other clubs and fans?

It’s childish from the huns and biased by the media.

You’re probably right, over the course of the season there have been relatively few disappointments.

  22. HT

Agree 100% on Brown for POTY.

We could survive without Johansen but not Brown. Brown is our leader and our most important player. The media are trying to blacken his name the last few weeks so that tells you how close he is to POTY. Of course they will start to champion a player of another club fairly soon and the campaign to make Neilson MOTY will commence soon as well.

A better questions is who is the most improved player under Ronny?

    Johansen?

    Bitton?

    Griffiths?

    Stokes?

    VVD?

Denayer? Hard to judge what he was like at City but he looks a cracking player for his age.

  24. If the SFA cup is by invitation,if we get to the final could the board withdraw our presence due to a very good reason? Then explain this to the world’s sport media.

A fine or a ban would follow but like another club we could totally ignore it. Just thinking of ways to get back at sfa

    POTY

Needs to be good and consistently good. Think Scott falls on Euro dismissals. Could be Craig though he hasn’t had much to do mostly. That would leave Johansen who is consistent at running about but not at passing. So, Bitton or Effe for me :-)

  26. The SNP?—By their deeds shall ye know them. ANY political party of whatever hue does not make a piece of legislation after “losing” the data that is most pertinent to the said legislation. I don’t mind Oul’ Lizzie. If the politicians had her work ethic and morals the UK would be a better place. I’m a Republican. I’ll give her the same respect as she showed at the Republican monument in Dublin. I would live in Scotland in the morning. I think it’s a great country badly served by it’s politicians and judiciary, and the obvious connections with the Masons and the OO. I’ve said it before and was pooh-poohed—set up your own Republican Scottish version of SF. Pay the MSPs just above living wage. Look after your old people. Cherish the child, and sort out education so that Catholic schools are held up as an example rather than a division. Oh, and POTY is Craig Gordon.

  27. !!Bada Bing!! on

HT-I think Brown and Johansen have shown greater consistency, with Bitton beside them.

  29. Efe for me too.

Gives the team everything every time in any position he’s played and never ever goes in a grump. I even like it when he surges up the park and then, when there’s nothing on, turns round and surges back down again. I’ve often thought what might have happened if even one or two had surged forward along with him instead of hanging back and maybe thinking’what’s he up to now?’

I do, I love Efe and he’s my POTY no matter who wins it :)

All of those you mentioned have shown real promise before (Denayer being the exception because we didn’t have him).

I’d probably say the most improved player would be Bitton though I do know he was outstanding away at Tynecastle last season.

    It’s a tough one.
