Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

Likelihood is Ronny will win the treble with Celtic.

Likelihood also is that Robbie Neilson will be Manager of the Year (Given the circs, I wouldn’t actually grudge him it)

With Brown, Johansen and Gordon all nominated for Player of the Year by the SPFA, the ‘Celtic’ vote will be split and the winner will be Adam Rooney.

The Football Writers on the other hand will opt for Nadir Ciftci as PoTY, and, in a triumph of expectation, Stuart McCall as MoTY.

The awards will be announced prior to the conclusion of the season though, and although McCall’s Sevco will be unbeaten at that point, subsequently matters won’t go to plan, and McCall will get the opportunity to ‘do a Robbie Neilson’ next season.

    My nominations for POTY ….

    1. Denayer …. absolute class. Doesn’t call attention to himself, but always in the right place, doing the right thing. If he was a few inches taller, he would be worth $50 million, easy.

    2. Gordon …. I was a big FF fan from the outset, and thought he would be a huge loss to us. But, to my surprise, I think CG is an upgrade…. While FF was a tremendous shot stopper, CG is also a very good shotstopper, plus he comes off the line more, and commands his box better, which seems to make the defence more comfortable.

    3. Biton … keeps the ball moving, like no other midfielder we have had for a while.

    4. Johanson … always been full of running, and is starting to take the chances … had he taken more of the chances earlier, he would be higher on my list.

But, as others have said, it has been a team effort.

Really hope that RD is given the recognition he deserves for the job he has done, although I suspect that he may be overlooked in favour of Aberdeen’s boss.

    Good post.

    Bada

I think Bitton brings the best out in several of our players.

He creates space for others, draws opposition players towards himself and he almost never gives team mates the ball when they’re under pressure.

  12. One of the 70 percent,

Actually, rather than being lazy and since it has been bothering me since yesterday, I’ve had a look at the news reports from the referendum.

3,619,915 people voted in the referendum, a turnout of 84.59% (approx 85%) of those who were actually eligible to vote.

Of the 3,619,915 who voted, approx 55% voted yes and the remaining 45% voted no. That is 55% of the people who took the time to vote not 55% of the number of people eligible to vote.

The 85% turnout means that approx 15% of the total number of the people eligible to vote stayed at home. Presumably, people could argue the 15% didn’t vote yes; equally it could be argued that they didn’t vote no. However, the value of 15% shouldn’t be added to the value of 55% (or 45%) as they not like for like.

15% is 15% of the total number of people eligible to vote.

55% is a percentage of the people who actually voted.

Did you add 55% and 15% to get the 70% in your blog name?

Not a word from the “Marble staircase”

The article is rubbish, but I think he has said that Celtic as a club,”Promote sectarianism”.

At the very least,I would expect a letter from Celtic lawyers to be dropping through his letterbox, informing the writer of proceedings.Celtic,as a club, cannot let this stand.

  18. Paul67, I think a lot of people are a little confused at the logic behind supporting the opinion that “(Scotland is) a sad little country” based on a decision by the SFA’s compliance officer to charge Guidetti with making a “comment of an offensive nature”.

  26. Beefheart–Gerry Adams is not a millionaire, I can assure you. SF members, drivers, MPs, MLAs, all take the industrial living wage. There may be some assistance with, say, a mortgage, but go and look where they live. They live where they work, and I know all the Belfast people from the formation of present day SF. It is not a money-making party. God forbid a Scottish political party should follow that example. I disagree with them on a number of things, especially education and finance, but they have my vote because they work. I am the Hon.Sec. of a boxing club and during the past year they have been involved in getting premises for the club at every stage from MP, Lord Mayor, MLA, and councillor. The club is in a deprived area of Belfast, and is superbly run. The club got great support.

Most Scottish football clubs have brought their finances under control, according to a report from accountants Begbies Traynor.

In their regular monitor of financial distress in football, they suggested lessons have been learned from Rangers’ collapse.

It found only one club in Scotland’s top three divisions was showing signs of financial distress.

Two years ago, the accountants found four clubs out of 32 in this position.

Clubs have been wisely cutting their cloth… and have largely avoided splashing out on players in the last two or three transfer windows

    Ken Pattullo, Begbies Traynor

Ken Pattullo, a partner with the accountancy firm and an expert in business recovery from crisis, said his survey showed a dramatic improvement in financial health.

Mr Pattullo commented: “The Rangers saga has dominated the headlines for years and recent loans from Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct have kept the club on the front pages again. But Rangers isn’t technically the most financially stressed club in Scotland, as a result of the recent cash injection.

“Overall an increased wariness among the other big clubs to spend heavily on transfers for fear of being the next big failure, and general good business planning in the boardrooms, has stabilised what was a really dangerous situation for the sport in Scotland.”

He added: “With a lack of money in the Scottish game, due largely to Rangers’ enforced exit from the Scottish Premier League, and the ensuing dearth of TV money, clubs have been wisely cutting their cloth accordingly and have largely avoided splashing out on players in the last two or three transfer windows.”

Measures of distress include large debts, winding up petitions, high court writs and serious court actions against clubs and warnings over late filing of accounts.

The report points out that average attendances across the Scottish Premier, Championship and Leagues One and Two are down by 5% since the previous Football Distress Report, a fall that is due in part to the recent boycott of Rangers games by disgruntled supporters.

  32. In much the same way as For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is an acronym.

It can be argued that H.U.N.S stands for Horrible Uninformed Newco Supporter?

  33. While we sit debating the word “Hun”the actual Huns themselves are gearing up to run riot next season.

Why only today my eyes were regaled by stories of ,Lafferty,Davis,Naismith ,all hammering down the doors of the “Big hoose”in an attempt to get back.At the same time the news of,”The masterplan”that Mc Call used to sweep aside Hibs, their 1st win in 9 games, heralds the return of the huns back to their rightful place.

Forget that they are trading while insolvent, have no Nomad, have a 50/50 chance of getting promoted, have a full team out of contract in the summer, according to the SMSM,there is no problems whatsoever, and we are in big trouble,as most of our players will be leaving this summer.Woe is me,bereft of hope and its raining here to add to my misery.
