Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

Scotland is a country with faults, just like every other country in the world.

However, some people make it appear to be the sad little country you allude to.

They are fewer now than ever. Vociferous only because they need to shout to be heard, where once a nod and a wink was enough.

They are slowly being strangled by the march of time,a dying breed.

Likelihood is Ronny will win the treble with Celtic.

Likelihood also is that Robbie Neilson will be Manager of the Year (Given the circs, I wouldn’t actually grudge him it)

With Brown, Johansen and Gordon all nominated for Player of the Year by the SPFA, the ‘Celtic’ vote will be split and the winner will be Adam Rooney.

Yes, I have been predicting the above.

Usually by now, wee Chic has started his campaign for anyone but Celtic players and managers.

Last year, he was touting Derek McInnes as soon as February.

He even said that even if McInnes lost the remaining dozen or so games, he should still be MOTY !

Willie Miller gave him a verbal slapping around the head but he still persisted.

  4. Dena–nit-picking. Mairtain O’Mullieor was the Lord Mayor I was referring to.The “last year” bit gives that away. SF members may have extra money or salary from elsewhere. However, I don’t tend to examine people’s finances, except for Dave King, or Murray the 6 million EBT recipient.

Martin Williams eh? Lazy journalism or something more sinister?

Whatever it it, there seems to be an epidemic of it about, where Celtic is concerned.

I’m glad the club see that our reputation is under concerted attack and that a response is imperative.

  6. Off topic I know but does anybody know the true story behind Delahunts alleged departure from SSB, in fact have they mentioned it? Will he be missed? hail Hail Hebcelt

POTY for me is Craig Gordon. Fraser was a very good shot stopper but didn’t command his area as well as a big guy should. I was confident that if Craig remained fit, then we had landed the real deal.

Think of our Euro campaign this year, how often did he produce top class saves?

The team is playing some great football since Christmas and Craig isn’t as busy as he was earlier in the season, but occasionally he still produces the ‘odd moment of magic’.

Others have mentioned Broonie, Virgil, Jason and Joe Hansen as well as Nir, all of these guys have really started to produce the goods for the ‘Tic, but more so since our free flowing football has ‘kicked in to gear’.

Craig Gordan was playing out of skin, especially when many others in the squad were finding their feet…

Thanks for your reply I’m not nit picking just commenting on the living wage. I have many friends in SF and can agree with you they do a lot of hard work but all politicians do hard work and in my experience you ask those to help because of an affinity to that party. I have worked in advice centres and can assure you there are very few incidents of politicians of any l persuasion not helping a constituent or local group when asked.

I hate it when the Iphone freezes like that. One of the reasons I only read and rarely post on mine.

I think the most improved player is a tougher one and it reflects well on our gaffer that we have so many POTY and MIP’s this season.

After a slow start and a few blips it’s turned out to be a very good season and on the verge of being excellent. I can only expect next season to be even better. Ronny gets at least 3 years no matter what happens in Europe next year in my view.

I think we have a problem in certain areas of the country, populated by ugly frothing at the mouth Huns.As a whole,I think Scotland is just fine.I only live here for the weather.I never had a problem in Scotland,in fact,I thrived there.

I think the word Hun is derogatory but it’s not sectarian. I have a couple of mates who support Rangers but I would never describe them as Huns. To me, Huns is a word for the bigoted Neanderthals in their support, and the name for their deid club. The campaign to have it described as sectarian is fascinating tho, as it shows the limited intellect of those putting forward the argument. I understand they find it offensive but that’s football rivalry for you. But when I asked them if they’d prefer to be called Zombies instead not one of them replied. :)

In fact zombies is much more descriptive of the followers of Sevco.

Hun actually allows them to believe they are still the same club. This hun case thing is going to be a major own goal I suggest!

For me it’s zombies from now on.

  14. Scotland’s a great country – a remarkable wee place that has been responsible for some phenomenal people who have graced the globe with talent, insight and character.

It’s the huns and the mentality that goes with it that spoils it imo. As a supporter of football, the hun mentality and the behaviour associated with it blights the game and leaves us, as Celtic supporters forced to confront it.

The huns have defined themselves by their behaviour, nothing else. Paid-up bawbags in the media are at it with this guff.

It’s not a surprise that this guff has reached a whole new Level, recently.

  15. POTY,,

So many have had great seasons so far,probably,6 or 7 would be worthy winners.
