Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

Sorry I sound like I’m being overly negative. I think it’s quite admirable that the representatives believe in their party enough to do that, and I’m sure if there was any suggestion of being compelled to do so against their well it would be public by now.

It’s good that we have the choice to opt out of the disproportionate funding of Englsih fitba in the case of SKY but less so that the imbalance is mirrored in the comparative funding by the national broadcaster, a medium we have little choice but to pay for.

Witnessing the output of BBC Scotland though, it could be argued that they’re not worth much more.

  9. From Celtic Wiki (so it must be 100% factual)

    Definition of Hun

Affectionate term used to describe the more rabid supporters (sic!) of various opposition clubs whose general political slant is strongly right-wing, parochial, conservative and highly xenophobic towards any form of outside influence.

“Huns” can usually be easily spotted due to their lack of cleanliness, and general poor looks.

“Huns” usually refers to Rangers fans in the main, but also can be used to refer to Hearts, Kilmarnock and even fans from clubs from outside Scotland who sympathise with them.

Lots of different stories how this name came about, but the most likely is that as a number of Rangers players were able to skip joining up for the war effort in the World Wars due to connections, and were said to be no better than the “Huns” (slang at the time in the UK media for the Germans and their Axis power counterparts), and the term stuck.

Used to actually be a term that Rangers fans also used against Celtic fans at one point (upto the 60s), but it didn’t work as it wasn’t accurate. It was a commonly used term by people against their enemies.

In summary, Hun is NOT sectarian, it’s just a mentality. One best summed up by the arrogance and elitism of the phrase “we are the people”.

    Oral history

Did some research by emailing people and asking the question -Huns ?

Anecdotal evidence is that supporters of the following clubs chanted – Go Home Ya Hun – when they played The Hun .

Aberdeen / Arbroath / Dundee / Dundee Utd / Hearts / Hibs / St Johnstone and Queen of The South.

  12. Again from Celtic Wiki ( Its a veritable mine of Tim minded info)

    UEFA on the term “Hun”

Following correspondence in September 2008, UEFA confirmed that Hun is not a sectarian term to a dishevelled Rangers fan!

    Original Letter

    Dear Sirs,

I feel compelled to write to you this evening to lodge a complaint about the offensive chanting by Celtic fans during their home game with Aalborg this evening.

I was utterly shocked to hear the Celtic fans sing ‘ There’s no HUNS in Europe’. The use of the word ‘HUNS’, in the context of Scottish society, is a sick sectarian slur on the protestant community and must be condemned by all right thinking people.

I find this chant and the use of this word, utterly reprehensible, and I am angry and annoyed that these so called fans consistently sing these songs and never appear to be reprimanded by UEFA.

Surely, such blatantly bigoted, sectarian, ant-protestant chants are contrary to UEFA rules, or is there a specific exception for Celtic Football Club.

I am not prepared to be openly insulted by these apologists for terrorists and murderers. It is deplorable that their sickening chants in support of Irish terrorists have been ignored by UEFA in the past, and I’m not prepared to tolerate such a blatant attack upon my religion on this occasion.

I expect UEFA to initiate an immediate, full and thorough investigation to verify that the chants were made and, having done so, to impose the severest sanction possible upon Celtic FC and their shameful fans.

I look forward to an early response

    UEFA response

    Dear Sir,

You have contacted the UEFA disciplinary services to complain about a song called “Huns away from Europe” that appears to have been chanted by Celtic supporters during the UEFA Champions League fixture between Celtic FC and Aalborg on 17 September. With all respect to your personal feelings and impression, the terms you object to do not appear to be connected with racial abuse or discrimination. Factually, the term “hun” has a historical background, notably in Europe. We understand that the chant “huns out of Europe” might have been referring to the fact that their arch rivals, Rangers, did not qualify for the UEFA Champions League! Celtic fans seem to refer to Rangers as the hun (the enemy).

Should you still consider the text to have a sectarian background, we recommend that you address the matter to the competent authorities in Scotland.

    Yours faithfully

    UEFA Disciplinary Services

  14. Bit of a random question….

Does anyone know the background of video game developer ‘Rockstar’ the Scottish company behind the global phenomenon Grand Theft Auto series?

I remember in the early days of the games Rockstar released a London edition where you were a character based in London and one of the missions was to blow up the ‘Rangers team bus’ on the way home from a match.

I have also noticed throughout the years little nudges like a street called ‘Seville Street’ and a car called ‘the Bobo’ and the main characters in the ‘San Andreas’ edition wear green as their gang colour.

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve always wondered if there is a Celtic connection with the developers coming from Scotland.

    Anyone know?

  23. Is it time we put the term “peedo” on the agenda? Well they started it.

Any one who has listened to the victim of paedophilia will recognise they are dealing with a damaged spirit. A spirit robbed of the trust in their fellow man which is a key element in living life to the full.

It is the cruellest and most selfish of sins because short term satisfaction is bought at the price of a lifetime of misery for the victim.

A debt that the perpetrator can never repay.

Yet there are supporters of TRFC who call Celtic supporters “peedos.”

Such individuals deserve to be described as huns. It is an accurate description of the mindset of the person using the term to offend Celtic fans to miss or relegate the spiritual damage paedophilia does to its victims and so further hurt them.

In the scale of offensiveness it leaves “huns” rooted at the bottom as it rockets to the top.

Yet no declaration by Celtic fans asking not to be called peedos? The term “peedo” has no more religious and so sectarian meaning than “huns”.

So until the RST come out with a statement condemning the use of “peedo”, they and those using that term deserve to be viewed as huns.

In not condemning the use of “peedo” by their own, the RST are supporting the robbing of spirit and accumulation of a spiritual debt that cannot be repaid, every time the charge is directed at Celtic supporters.

No decent human, being having listened to the testimony of a victim of paedophilia, would ever consider using the word to offend.

The absence of decency is one of the characteristics that make a hun a hun.
