I think you have faced the debunking of your bald and simplistic statement that the IRA backed the Nazis many times before, notably by kitalba, but your ears have not been open to it.

Your tale of Sean Rusell and the submarine is your one defence of that view and you tell it as if it is a surprising tale on which some of us need an education.

It falls into the same category as Roger Casement’s procurement of arms from the Kaiser and the desertion of troops from WW1 when they heard of the Rising and its aftermath.

The enemy of my enemy is often mistaken for my friend, as was amply demonstrated by so many Celts cheering on Watford today, a team that we had no relationship with previously and will not hold any affection for ever again.

Your debunking before consisted of being told:-

Sean Russell and pals were not the whole IRA.

There was a serious amount of disapproval of the engagement with the Nazis from within the movement.

O’Duffy’s blueshirts amounted to nothing and were less of a footnote than were the Daily Mail backed blackshirts of Mosley (whom you ludicrously asserted were backed by the IRA too).

There were more Republicans and IRA men involved in Spain during the Civil War than there were in the submarine incident.

& finally it was shown to you again and again that Dev’s neutrality was heavily weighted to favouring Allied efforts in WW2, a war where many many more Irishmen fought against Hitler than the numbers you can bring to bear as being, however temporarily, his allies.

There’s a lot more than the Green Brigade in need of an education on these matters.

You still sure the Chinese are fascists , as you asserted recently?

My young nephews follow Celtic and I know for a fact they would not be flinging any missiles … as for the songs afraid this is and always will be in defiance of some don’t like the songs fair enough but as far as I am aware the songs that are song have no hatred attached … stupid add ons and for the record …. the Huns / Sevs singing the Billy Boys, Famime Song or even off their other witty ditties does not bother me in the slightest … I would much prefer their bigotry & ignorance in song than missiles plus their songs of hate I find easily to laugh off … let them sing what they want…. embarrass them into the 21st century … as for songs of fallen heroes no hatred there ….

And how well did he deserve the accolades he received .

  17. Kelly Jones a man who didn’t lose his head up his own rectum when fame and fortune came his way.

A note from Kelly about the song –

‘Chaos from the Top Down’ is a song sung from the imagined perspective of a fifteen-year-old boy laying in the road after being shot. He’s reflecting in his time of dying about his life and the choices he made through the lack of options and opportunities he felt he had in today’s Britain. It also touches on the tags and labels that have been stuck on him. The stereotypes and clichés that were placed on him. It’s based on a true story that happened just outside my street. It’s happening everywhere. I’ve always written about what’s going on around me or within me since ‘Local Boy In The Photograph’ in 1996. It doesn’t fit into the style of the album I’m writing and the current political climate inspired me to release it now.

I remember being that age – vividly. Making choices in a working-class mining town, some right some very wrong. I found inspiration in a boxing gym, mixing with older guys while listening and learning discipline. Now, I have kids becoming teens and walking them past a murder scene to get to school makes an impact. I don’t want this to be dark and all doom n’ gloom, as music is meant to be a release, but at times also to inform or provoke us. I’m sure like I had, these kids who are victims of knife or gun or any attacks, had other hopes and dreams.

The streets are changing in London just like they are changing in Wales and everywhere else. Police stations are being closed down all over the place, just like the youth centres being closed down from lack of funding it goes on and on. This band began in a youth club. People need ambition and something to inspire them.

We all need a purpose to our days. Without it, the devil makes work for idle hands to do.

  21. Morning All – Drizzly Not Dreich in the Chilterns this morning…

Had a lurkers catch up on CQN last evening, interesting that in just one week the fickle finger of fate has Brendan Rodger the outcast and Jose Mourinho as some kinda Celtic hero.

There was a piece in the Mail on Sunday roundly condemned – quelle surprise.

However, many, many moons ago, my parents switched to getting The Mail when the Red Tops, inspired by Murdoch and Maxwell, competed in a race to the bottom.

My suspicion has always been, that it had something to do with us finding ourselves in split level, four bedroom suburbia as well.

So when I started work it was the Guardian everyday for me. Wasn’t interested in the Daily Mail, especially their new heroin “The Iron Lady”.

Still what I did read was the sports section, my appetite for that kind of news was insatiable and it was really very good… so this morning when reading back and seen as well as bestowing honorific status on the special one, the aul Rodgers debate had proved Godwin correct once again.

So I read the article in The MoS; of course the headline was not a true reflection of the piece and far from being aimed at pricks, English or otherwise it was a well thought out, accurate piece of journalism.

Certainly better than I’ve read on-line or elsewhere and much better than the Hearld or Record efforts.

Brendan Rodgers showed ambition in leaving Celtic… winning titles in Scotland is like shooting fish in a barrel

By Oliver Holt for the Mail on Sunday

It is not difficult to decode the righteous fury that Celtic fans have aimed at Brendan Rodgers since he left the club for Leicester City in the week.

As he was ambitious, so they slew him. As he shone a light on the lowly position of the Scottish game in the football firmament, so a few of them sang of hoping he died in his sleep with a bullet from the IRA.

It was not because he left them in the lurch, as a few claimed this week. That is one of the funniest things I have heard for a long time, even in football’s mad world. Left them in the lurch? Rodgers had already guided them to victory in the Scottish League Cup this season, they are in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup and they are eight points clear of Rangers at the top of the league.

Rodgers has led them into seven domestic competitions in his time in charge at Celtic Park and won all of them. None of his illustrious predecessors had done that. He led them to the verge of a Treble Treble. In the battle between Celtic and the rest of Scottish football, Rodgers has left his team with its foot on the throat of its opponent.

It is true that Celtic is one of the world’s great football clubs in a way that Leicester City never will be. There is no dispute about that.

Celtic are one of the best-supported teams on the planet. Their history is rich and they are, quite rightly, a source of pride to the community amidst which they amass their glories.

But it is also true, particularly at this moment in the history of Scottish football, that there is a perception that winning domestic trophies as the manager of Celtic is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Let’s be honest: Celtic don’t even want to play in the Scottish Premiership so they ought not to be too surprised that Rodgers no longer wants to manage in it.

Celtic are trapped in Scottish football. They are marooned in a league of meagre revenues.

There is much to admire about Scottish football and the values it holds but winning the league is what is expected of the Celtic manager now. It is the bare minimum requirement. Anything else would be failure.

There is not as much kudos in winning domestic trophies as Celtic manager as there is in finishing in the top six in the English Premier League. So let’s have no more of this nonsense about Rodgers leaving Celtic in the lurch and the moral outrage that has accompanied it. It is about as far away from the truth as it is possible to be. Rodgers did a brilliant job for Celtic from start to finish. His sin is that he walked away.

And woe betide a manager, or a player, if he inverts the traditional power structure in the game. God help him if he leaves at a time of his choosing, not the club’s.

It was not just that he walked away. He left for Leicester City.

Leicester may have won the Premier League a few seasons ago but are 11th in the table and are not one of the game’s traditional powerhouses. ‘You swapped immortality for mediocrity,’ a Celtic banner read at the away game against Hearts last week. Mediocrity? Really? Leicester might not be as big a club as Celtic but they have better players and a better side.

The message on the sign was widely applauded by those who accused Rodgers of betrayal. He had, Andy Gray, the beIN Sports pundit said, ruined the prospect of a statue being erected in his honour outside the ground.

Bitterness and amnesia are happy bedfellows and the fact that Rodgers had already achieved unprecedented triumphs with Celtic seems to have been conveniently forgotten.

He led the team to the Double Treble last May when they strolled to a Scottish Cup final victory over Motherwell. Even in a nation accustomed to long periods of domination by either Rangers or Celtic, it was a first for a Scottish team. It was acclaimed as ‘historic’ at the time.

So Rodgers really had nothing left to prove. Sure, he could have tried to complete the Treble Treble. And then it would have been nice if he could have added the Quadruple Treble next season, too. And there would always have been the Quintuple Treble after that. Celtic’s dominance under Rodgers was starting to sound like one of Private Eye’s celebrations of illicit booty: trebles all round.

But with funds limited, maybe Rodgers figured he had achieved all he could at Celtic. When you’re counting trophies in Trebles, it tells you that maybe the competition is lacking, even with Steven Gerrard beginning to breathe new life into Rangers.

If there is not immortality in winning seven trophies in a row, it is not Rodgers’ fault. It is the fault of the environment in which he worked. When he left, he did what any other manager of ambition would do. However big a club Celtic are, it is something they are going to have to get used to.

When Rodgers was not given the financial backing to allow the team to compete in the Champions League or the Europa League, it appears he decided the time was right to move on. His reward for that was the second part of the sign at Tynecastle, which said: ‘Never a Celt. Always a Fraud.’ Indeed, in the days since his departure, he has been portrayed as feckless and insincere.

That, too, is unfair. Rodgers is ambitious but it is not as if he has ever hidden that. When Chris Sutton, the former Celtic star who has also been a critic of Rodgers’ move, interviewed him some time ago, Rodgers refused to provide any guarantees he would stick around if a Premier League club came calling.

Now he is being traduced for accepting a new challenge. Even if he could have given Leicester assurances that he would join at the end of the season, where would the honour have been in that?

It is better, surely, that he has left immediately and allowed them to appoint a fine replacement like Neil Lennon, rather than carrying on under false pretences.

Now Rodgers will be competing in one of the world’s best leagues at a club with a talented squad of players, a set-up that is widely admired, owners prepared to back him in the transfer market and a team that has already proved they can upset the odds in the top tier.

In some ways, it will pale besides life at Celtic. In others, the challenge for a manager who wants to get back to the top will be more stimulating at Leicester. Rodgers is ambitious and, as he was ambitious, they slew him.
