You have to look at things objectively. Many smaller teams in larger leagues prioritise the top 4 over Europa League. Leicester did this season (they rested players when they were knocked out). Leipzig and Lazio rested (or at least did not start) first team players against us in at least one leg of our games in order to focus on obtaining the top 4.

It is difficult to criticise most aspects of BR’s European record with us, although I do think he was an ideologue determined to play football in a particular manner (possession based) which was to our determinant against the super clubs. First season he got us back to the CL and was drawn in one of (if not) the hardest groups we have faced. In his second season, another tough CL group. Our opponents in the knock out rounds were CL level teams – Zenit and Valencia. Against that backdrop, it’s difficult to criticise not progressing past the last 32. Losing to a team of Copenhagen’s standard is a different matter.

Gerrard has certainly made Sevco a very tough and consistent Europa league quality team. But his knockout stage draws have been favourable – Antwerp and Braga are not in the same league as Zenit and Valencia. When Sevco played Leverkusen and Slavia – the former is certainly CL quality, the latter a decent EL team – they were found wanting.

You could argue that only his time at Liverpool could really be classified as a failure from a European perspective. Still, he got them closer to winning a title than any manager in recent history had up until Klopp arrived; Klopp is a pretty outstanding manager, so no shame in not being at his level.

I would expect Arsenal and Spurs to look at BR. His domestic record in England is sufficiently good to merit that. Guardiola with all the money in the world at his disposal has not won a CL for 10 years. That may change fairly soon, but European football is a competitive environment.

    Never sure these days.

Do you not think Barcelona might have a few reservations about someone with that record?

    ——————————————-

Barcelona appointed Koeman. Not sure his CV was much better either domestically or in Europe.

The Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow’s full statement said: “Today is understandably a significant day for Rangers Football Club and its supporters. We understand the importance of football in Glasgow, how it connects our communities and, is for many, a culture and a way of life.

if the divisional commander had done his homework he would have noticed that ‘Rangers Football Club’ do not exist

they used exist, for over a century actually

    but they dont now

he is in fact talking about ‘The Rangers Football Club’

which is the newer name for ‘Sevco Scotland Limited’ who were founded in 2012

Just what financial wizardry did PL perform. He just spent enough to be in front, money generated by us, kept £40m in the bank at one point, didn’t do due diligence on appointing NL in the shower.

Ps have a season book, had one since 1986, when it was the princely sum of £80, current seat details available if requested (automatic renewal too) I only point this out, not for the “I’m a better supporter than you award” merely for context

  13. No doubt you are all seeing the same images as I am. Absolutely shameful. Being portrayed as a “party mood” by a compliant media. Both the Scottish Government and the Police are culpable for today for their mealy-mouthed, wishy-washy language in the build up. A phuckin disgrace and likely to increase the chances of further lockdown.

Brilliant for Brendan Rodgers and his back room staff getting that win today. So good to see.

    =======================

We have quite a range of share ownership.in 1995 Celtic fans stood forward and put their money into Celtic in a then world record share issue.its the admin of those shares that needs to be overseen and registration maintained.if not the voting right defaults to DD./the board. The Celtic Trust are doing a big drive.

Most who bought in still own their shares. They were not bought to sell.it was a bit of Celtic.

Who? in terms of serious investors, Wigan had a few of them recently. We have to watch here imo.we have a lot of financial stability aboard in DD since 1994/5.

some fans drifted away in Ronny years,no old frim in sight remember the top tier

Alas any time we have had success in europe it starts here.

i think DD would be receptive to a bid.all good capitalists are but the monies would be vastly dif from 94.

    always good to make Celtic.

I’m sure they rested a few players in the return leg, but in any event, I stand by the fairly common approach that teams from the big leagues prioritise top 4 over Europa League (at least until the rules changed and they can qualify directly by winning the competition).

  22. Thoroughly depressing and extraordinary scenes in Glasgow today. I’ve seen a number of videos and believe me what I’ve seen is sub human. The cost to the city and the country will run into many millions of pounds.

Rangers is a great football club, it has a great history and it’s unfortunate that they have been relegated,” said the Irish businessman.

“We would certainly like to contest with them every week – we believe we’ve got a better team and a better management structure.

“Rangers is a fantastic football club, it is one of the greatest football clubs in Great Britain, we’ve got to acknowledge that. But we can only look after ourselves.”

I don’t think he will be starved out, but a boycott could elicit change in their approach to the footballing department.

If we had 60,000 supporters turning up during the Ronny era irrespective of how poor we were or how little ambition we showed, we would not have signed BR. The board wouldn’t feel the need.

Only because people did not attend and consequently revenue dropped, did they feel the need to finally act and make a quality appointment to entice the supporters back.

100% correct. I am almost lost for words at some of the disgusting video images I’ve seen tonight. If Gerrard thinks that standard of behaviour is acceptable then it says more about him than anything I ever could.

Valencia are a perfect fit for your description of a team in a big leagues that prioritizes domestic league positions over Europa success, and field weakened teams as a result.

By your logic we shouldn’t be going at as meekly against them as we did. The defeat is an even bigger black mark against them in that case
