You have to look at things objectively. Many smaller teams in larger leagues prioritise the top 4 over Europa League. Leicester did this season (they rested players when they were knocked out). Leipzig and Lazio rested (or at least did not start) first team players against us in at least one leg of our games in order to focus on obtaining the top 4.

It is difficult to criticise most aspects of BR’s European record with us, although I do think he was an ideologue determined to play football in a particular manner (possession based) which was to our determinant against the super clubs. First season he got us back to the CL and was drawn in one of (if not) the hardest groups we have faced. In his second season, another tough CL group. Our opponents in the knock out rounds were CL level teams – Zenit and Valencia. Against that backdrop, it’s difficult to criticise not progressing past the last 32. Losing to a team of Copenhagen’s standard is a different matter.

Gerrard has certainly made Sevco a very tough and consistent Europa league quality team. But his knockout stage draws have been favourable – Antwerp and Braga are not in the same league as Zenit and Valencia. When Sevco played Leverkusen and Slavia – the former is certainly CL quality, the latter a decent EL team – they were found wanting.

You could argue that only his time at Liverpool could really be classified as a failure from a European perspective. Still, he got them closer to winning a title than any manager in recent history had up until Klopp arrived; Klopp is a pretty outstanding manager, so no shame in not being at his level.

I would expect Arsenal and Spurs to look at BR. His domestic record in England is sufficiently good to merit that. Guardiola with all the money in the world at his disposal has not won a CL for 10 years. That may change fairly soon, but European football is a competitive environment.

Do you not think Barcelona might have a few reservations about someone with that record?

Barcelona appointed Koeman. Not sure his CV was much better either domestically or in Europe.

The Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow’s full statement said: “Today is understandably a significant day for Rangers Football Club and its supporters. We understand the importance of football in Glasgow, how it connects our communities and, is for many, a culture and a way of life.

if the divisional commander had done his homework he would have noticed that ‘Rangers Football Club’ do not exist

they used exist, for over a century actually

    but they dont now

he is in fact talking about ‘The Rangers Football Club’

which is the newer name for ‘Sevco Scotland Limited’ who were founded in 2012

to about 40,000 at Celtic Park with the full top tier of the

Lisbons Lions Stand closed but when Rodgers came in our

season ticket renewals, revenue etc went through the roof

but although we won the league in Rodgers second season

it was nowhere as convincing as his first season and I wonder if

the board influence started to get to him and it was then he

knew he couldnt take us as far as he would like

  9. Helicopter been out in City centre for about an hour..

How much is does that cost me.

  10. Brilliant for Brendan Rodgers and his back room staff getting that win today. So good to see.

Let’s be clear Brendan was an ambitious manager. We gave him a chance to get back on track and rebuild his reputation. He is a clever guy and grasped it. My son worked for his team for 3 months and could not have rated their work ethic and drive high enough.

Ultimately he was going to go at some point. We all knew it ( unless you look at the world through green tinted specs ). He went and has performed. He has done there what he did with us.

None of this has f all to do with Lawwell. He brought him in when we needed him and Rodgers delivered.

As for Lambert 14 and his like I would suggest you maybe have not been a Celtic supporter for long if you see the lawwell tenure as a failure. We have never had such a sustained period of domination in our history. Even against a financially doped Huns for several years. That we were against no huns for 5 years was entirely due to an effective strategy initiated by Brian Quinn post Seville which lawwell delivered.

Show me a finite market in any commodity in the world where a company spends even more each year with the chance of only achieving what they did in a prior year ? Sadly football in Scotland faces a glass ceiling so get used to it !

Basic financial fundamentals suggest we will get back and this horrible day will be the only trophy the Huns win in a generation.

I know first hand there were no major rifts between board or lawwell and Rodgers.

Rodgers was ambitious and the arrangement was contractual.

Sure Brendan milked the Irish and family thing to get fans with him but ultimately he is a pro and Scotland always had a glass ceiling for him.

Leicester, as we see today offered so much more for his career.

  14. Their only trophy in a generation has been won with virtually no fans getting to see any of it live.

    I find that so funny.

No one can say. I was there ….

  15. Go tell the Spartim on

Just what financial wizardry did PL perform. He just spent enough to be in front, money generated by us, kept £40m in the bank at one point, didn’t do due diligence on appointing NL in the shower.

Ps have a season book, had one since 1986, when it was the princely sum of £80, current seat details available if requested (automatic renewal too) I only point this out, not for the “I’m a better supporter than you award” merely for context

  16. No doubt you are all seeing the same images as I am. Absolutely shameful. Being portrayed as a “party mood” by a compliant media. Both the Scottish Government and the Police are culpable for today for their mealy-mouthed, wishy-washy language in the build up. A phuckin disgrace and likely to increase the chances of further lockdown.

  18. Rolling_Stone on

    @ BURNLEY78 on 15TH MAY 2021 9:39 PM

You keep on pushing the line that PL is somehow responsible for creating/implementing a strategy that sunk Rangers. Pray tell?

As soon as Lawwell arrived we began cost cutting to the playing squad. Whether that was needed or not is somewhat irrelevant for present purposes. Against that backdrop, how could he be responsible for pushing Rangers to the brink? If he came in and increased spending, forcing Rangers to do the same, I could maybe get on board with that point of view. But he didn’t.

Rangers were overspending well before Lawwell arrived. What changed was that Murray could no longer bankroll them and absorb the losses. That and the financial crisis which meant that the largesse of their bankers was also cut off.

I think you continue to push this line because when Rangers died, Lawwell basically sat on his hands and waited for the new iteration to come on the scene (he also send bugger all about all the cheating and financial doping you mention. Celtic meekly sat by and accepted everything). However, if Lawwell was responsible for their demise, then this inaction would be looked on more kindly.

  19. BURNLEY78 on 15TH MAY 2021 9:39 PM

I genuinely don’t want to be cheeky to you, as everyone has an opinion, and there are a few other Celtic fans scattered around who still , despite all the evidence to the contrary, think the same as you do about Lawwell too.

Blind faith is a strange thing.

It makes people believe in something so strongly that any evidence is just disregarded.

Look at sevco fans, who will tell you that the club that died in 2012 really didn’t die at all.

    Again, blind faith in action.

What I wanted to ask you was if you were a supporter of the old board of Grants, Kellys and Whites until their downfall?

    =======================

We have quite a range of share ownership.in 1995 Celtic fans stood forward and put their money into Celtic in a then world record share issue.its the admin of those shares that needs to be overseen and registration maintained.if not the voting right defaults to DD./the board. The Celtic Trust are doing a big drive.

Most who bought in still own their shares. They were not bought to sell.it was a bit of Celtic.

Who? in terms of serious investors, Wigan had a few of them recently. We have to watch here imo.we have a lot of financial stability aboard in DD since 1994/5.

some fans drifted away in Ronny years,no old frim in sight remember the top tier

Alas any time we have had success in europe it starts here.

i think DD would be receptive to a bid.all good capitalists are but the monies would be vastly dif from 94.

I’m sure they rested a few players in the return leg, but in any event, I stand by the fairly common approach that teams from the big leagues prioritise top 4 over Europa League (at least until the rules changed and they can qualify directly by winning the competition).
