Hibs are likely as anyone to win next trophy Celtic drop

125

On first pass, it seems a bit of a reach for new Hibs manager, Jack Ross, to target challenging for domestic honours, with his team lying eight in the table, one of five clubs who have won only two league games this season.

Hibs were the last club to win a domestic trophy before Celtic went on their treble winning streak.  That Scottish Cup win, in 2016, came from an even more unlikely position than the bottom half of the Premiership, the club failed to win promotion from the Championship that season.

Aberdeen and Newco have provided the main challenge to Celtic in the league for six seasons now, but Aberdeen have won only one trophy, the 2013-14 League Cup, in 29 years, and Newco have only just reached their second final.  I’m not convinced either have what it takes to win silverware.

Celtic have plenty to do this season to stretch their grip on Scottish trophies, but winning the League Cup next month would frustrate the efforts of Newco, who are financially underwater and will want a trophy before their best ever team breaks up.

Hibs shipped five goals to Celtic in their Hampden semi-final earlier this month, but they had the better of play for periods of the second half.  They are significantly weaker than Newco right now, but this is just a snapshot.  If Celtic win next month’s final, Hibs are as likely to take the next trophy dropped by Celtic as anyone in the league.

  1. Might have been on target, but keeper would probably have saved it. Deflection took it away from the keeper.

  2. Naismith done nothing in the game – ball comes off back of his head and all of a sudden he’s what Scotland has missed

  3. Think it may have been another O.G. Didn’t look to be much contact from Naismith, and the last touch looked to be off the defenders napper.

jobo, ok. The wee rodent ? Vermin ? 😜

  4. He may well be Jobo. He’s such an odious character on the park, he must have some redeeming qualities.

Ryan Christie now, he’s a proper football player. What a talent he is.

  5. Ryan Christie off. ( sub )

    Only 83 minutes gone.

To be fair to Steve Clarke, he has a job to do, and naturally wants his best players on the park. Can’t blame him for that.

  6. prestonpans bhoys on

Well I don’t know what Jack offers to the table and the sheep think mcKenna is £10M deary me😱😵

  7. Steve Clarke is anti-Celtic. Lenny asked him to go easy on Calmac and James, who have played far more games than any other players in the Scotland squad. Lenny should have done what Liverpool did, withdrawing Robertson because of a “niggling injury” (which won’t stop him frpm playing in Liverpool’s next match.)

  8. Don’t think anyone up here in Aberdeen believes McKenna is worth anything like 10m.

That’s what the Dons valued him at when clubs were sniffing around him a wee while ago. They’re right to demand as much as they can get for a player on a long contract. He’s worth whatever a buying club is prepared to pay for him. It was reported that they turned down 8m

  9. And with that game won I can now look forward to Celtic moving 3 points clear on Saturday afternoon.

  10. Prestonpans boy.

I agree. Games like this show how limited guys like McKenna are.

Dont know how Aberdeen think they will get anything near £10m for him

  11. Bateen Bhoy

….and he grew whiskers on his chinagain.

Jobo`s team have another victory :-))

Glad someone picked up on it…

3 in a row for Scotland now, and 4 months until the next game. Hopefully LMS13 will be finished by then……..

  13. Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism – how passionately I hate them! Albert Einstein

Being good at sums wasn`t Albert`s only talent.

    `night all.

  14. Ireland Under 21s come back from concession of early goal to beat second seeds Sweden 4-1, that is a 7-2 aggregate over 2 games. Some fine performances Lee O’Connor had an extremely good game.

  15. Christie and Taylor played well, James was a good outlet but didn’t have an end product. Overall Scotland did ok. John McGinn was outstanding. I was thinking the other day, he’s probably the closest type of footballer I’ve seen to Roy Keane in the last 15 years or so. Maybe not the most technically gifted but what a midfield player. I reckon he will move to one of the top teams in the next year or so. Villa will cash in big time.

McGinn’s performances in the EPL have dropped off massively since early season, I can’t see any of the big boys signing him.

  17. Hot Smoked from earlier

  18. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

So an injured Forrest and McGregor both do 90 minutes.

    Thanks Steve.

Ryan Jack is not a footballer.

Glad this charade is now over for four months.

Held my tongue (finger) during previous discussion about Glasgow clubs’ players getting on well in Scotland camp.

Jack was asked the question, not the FOUR Celtic players in the team who would have seen through it.

Question was targeted to generate an ‘O#d F#rm’ headline.

Easy formula : 4 Celts + solitary Sev = OF.

    Hail hail

  19. I was shouting for John McGinn Celtic fanatic to sign for Celtic when he played for Saint Mirren. I had seen him play for Saint Peter the Apostle Clydebank before then. He was always a cut above his peers at that level. So chuffed for him. Best Scot in the EPL. I included Andy Robertson. The BankieBhoy is better than Andy. Brendan was right. Peter Lawwell made a #### of it. He will reach the top.
