Hibs Armageddon dividend, gift the young will never know

882

Well done to Hibernian fans for turning up in sufficient numbers to increase turnover to £8.0m from £6.9m the previous season, allowing the club to turn a profit in Armageddon season, despite some mediocre performances on the field.  The challenge for chairman Rod Petrie is to ensure the elevated income level results in the club outperforming village clubs, who survive on a fraction of Hibs income.

Hibernian should tower over St Johnstone, Inverness, Ross County and Motherwell in the race for second place.

Debt remains high at £5.5m (if Celtic’s debt was a similar proportion to turnover it would be circa £40m) but with the wages to turnover ratio at 49% there is scope to both bring debt down and get better value for money on the field.

30 friends, family and supporters of the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust will be leaving Celtic Park on tomorrow afternoon heading to Dingwall where they will start a 400 mile cycle round every Scottish Premiership ground returning to Celtic Park on Sunday 15th September at 3:30pm. Their goal is to raise £100k for Melanoma Action and Support Scotland (MasScot) who are looking to introduce Scotland’s first ever mobile skin cancer screening unit which is bound to save lives given the success rates when diagnosing melanoma in early stages.

You can follow the team @TommyBurnsSCT and on Facebook this week as they begin this amazing fundraising event. Please support the team if you can at MyDonate. Packie Bonner and Frank McGarvey are signed up and Bertie Auld is getting involved in the final day.

You can participate in the last hour of the cycle, from St Mirren to Celtic Park, leaving around 2:30 on the Sunday, by emailing scottmcgarvey@gmail.com.  Scott will get you organised and help with a fundraising page.

Our thoughts to Jock Stein’s surviving family today, 28 years after his death, as another former Celtic manager prepares Scotland for a World Cup qualifier.  Those old enough to remember his time have a gift which the young will never know.

Incredible responses from McIntyre. Also claiming he wouldn’t expect any other journalist to back him in that situation.

I wonder what Richard Gordon has to say, about Jim Spence, always got the immpression the two of them were singing from the same hymn sheet.

  5. I fear other media outlets will see Jim Spence as “toxic” and won’t employ the man,in fear of backlash from the Gang.

  6. If Jim spence has been cast adrift by the BBC then we should hire him for our media department , just imagine the perma rage that would cause.

Disgusted at the treatment Jim Spence is getting from his employers and fellow jurnos, though not surprised.

I’m minded of the rabid and rapid response from Shorties frontmen………..when the Celtic were making a stand against bent refereeing………………didn’t one of the trumpets ( it may have been The St Mirren Fan) phone the Israeli ref associatio to urgently and vehemently demand they withdraw their support……………..

Would I be right in saying that all the Scottish journalists(sports) backed Keevins when he was barred years ago?

One BBC journo who will not idly stand by while a colleague has his reputation and his career trashed is Stuart Cosgrove.

Especially so if attempts are made at coercion.

I expect fireworks from him if Spence is,indeed, hung out to dry by his employer and by his colleagues.

Just checked and Richard Gordon is in Skopje. Doubt he will be on twitter much today. He probably won;t say anything about his mate Spencey though. Better for him to say nothing at the minute.

I agree with an earlier poster though that Cosgrove will be worth listening to on Saturday. he won’t hold back.

Too many great goals seen to decide on the best but I loved Stevie Chalmers’ toe poke for the 4th in the 1969 Cup final.

    Best team performance was Lisbon.

Did Jim Spence breach BBC Scotland’s guidlines on accuracy when he said “the club that died” when talking about Deidco?

If he did then BBC Scotland are hoist by their own petard. If they want to defend an employee for something he said on air, then that outburst cannot really be in breach of their own guidelines, particularly in light of the very recent BBC Trust’s Editorial Standards Committee (ESC) findings. The verdict was that previous BBC Scotland reporting had been in breach of those guidelines when it referred to “old and new club” & not “old and new company”.

This is the BBCs own report of that finding. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-22951447

And this is an extract from that article.

[The committee said the Rangers story was “a complex subject and it considered that the use of imprecise language was likely to have been as a result of that complexity”.

In its evidence to the Trust, BBC Scotland had stated: “We remain of the opinion that due accuracy was achieved.”

It said: “A football club, once incorporated, is indistinguishable in Scots law from its corporate identity.

“If the club was separate it would need its own constitution, committee members, trustees, etc.

“Rangers Football Club does not have that because it is incorporated.”

BBC Scotland’s submission said that an implication of the ESC ruling could be that future reporting, in order to achieve a “common standard”, may have to differentiate “between the business elements of a club’s activities and its footballing activities”.

It added: “This, we believe, would add layers of complexity to reporting that would not be to the benefit of clear reportage or enhance the understanding of such issues by our audiences.”]

BBC Scotland might think that they are between a rock and a hard place on this. Do they defend Jim Spence and look their own corporate ESC in the eye and tell them they don’t care about the previous finding OR do they admit nothing, leave Jim Spence on his own and wait for the storm to blow over. Seems an easy decision from where I sit.

In addition Kenny McIntyre on twitter is apparently saying that all journos know that they responsible for what they each say on air, so Jim’s colleagues/Union will do nothing.

Morality and fairness have nothing to do with it. We should be used to that situation.

BBC Scotland’s own comments above after the ESC findings are pretty clear to me though. No apologies for repeating it…

“A football club, once incorporated, is indistinguishable in Scots law from its corporate identity.

“If the club was separate it would need its own constitution, committee members, trustees, etc.

“Rangers Football Club does not have that because it is incorporated.”

  21. Although calling for JS colleagues to fully support him,we need guys like Cosgrove and a lesser extent Cowan,to stick around and call it truthfully.

  22. Forgeot to mention bhoys, i believe it is beholden on ever fair minded individual to complain about the blatant misinterpretation of facts that the BBC apology represents.

  23. The latest Jim Spence news is so saddening and also worrying.

The average journalist/club/company/business know that to speak out against them, even if its to speak the truth can result in the end of their careers and i find this is the biggest issue facing all of us.

There will be many more Jim Spences im afraid.

  24. while the support of the jocks Cosgrove and Cowan might be helpful this is an issue that needs, independent, senior, heavy-hitter momentum………..
