Hibs, Belgrade win and lots of goals

256

Before the start of the season, I remember discussing our early league fixtures.  Pittodrie, Ibrox and Rugby Park in the opening weeks looked like a tough start.  Five games in and sides from those locations are bottom of the league have been unable to manage a win between them.

Above that inglorious group, we beat Livingston, as well as Falkirk in the League Cup.  The only team in the top half of the table we have faced is St Mirren (who have one league win on the board). Tomorrow, fourth placed Hibernian come to Celtic Park, undefeated in the league, although with only one win so far.

Despite their capitulation at Ibrox last week, it would be foolish to underestimate Hibs.  They are 13 games into their season and should be fully fit, while Celtic players are clearly still on the upwards slope.  They had an extra day’s rest; drawing at Falkirk on Tuesday, a day before out draw in Belgrade.

Belgrade, of course, is the location of Hibs highlight of the season so far.  They beat Partizan 0-2 in Conference League qualification, a result which didn’t seem realistic beforehand.  Partizan are two points behind Red Star, second placed in Serbia and the weaker of the two Belgrade sides, but still a worthy scalp for Hibs.

They scored goals: 22 in 13 games, Newco are the only side not to concede against them, and that includes visits to Legia (3-3 draw) and Midtjylland (1-1).  Trouble is, they can’t defend.  Only Livingston have drawn a blank, on the plastic too.

Celtic created enough on Wednesday night to suggest we have turned the chance creation corner.  A win for the champions tomorrow should be expected; we will probably need it to stay nip-and-tuck with Hearts.

While wanting us to win, I have a soft spot for Hibs, and love their 150th anniversary hooped top.

I watched the whole of the first half of huns v Hibs, they should have been two up. So should be an interesting game, looking forward to it 👍

  3. the long wait is over on

A good performance and more importantly a win tomorrow please.

This early in the season is about just ruthlessly squeezing the life out of any contenders.

We did indeed create more against Red Star , but spent the entire first half inside our shell . I expect us to be more progressive v Hibs and for Tounekti to have more of an impact then he did on Wednesday . 3-1 .

First of three consecutive home matches, with a chance to consolidate our position at the top of the SPL and next week make some progress in the Europa League. Tomorrow’s game against Hibs sold out, Hibs will bring a big support, and is probably our last Sat 3pm at Celtic Park for a while. (Well done Tom Mac btw great gesture)

Great fixture to test our mettle, and indeed to continue to find our best formation, and line-up. From my perspective the team looks really promising, with our late arrivals making an early impact, and young Donovan looking a great prospect. Oh as an added bonus, there are three (3) Paradise Windfall Draws tomorrow each for £10,000 so well worth buying yourself tiket or two.

Yeah – we’ll have to be at our absolute best over the closing 33 games……

  8. Team selection still a bit of an issue. My own preference would be Daizen, Kelechi and Seb on the right.

Doubt Brendan will do that. Yang starting, especially on the right side has offered very little, can anyone explain it other than there’s no one else.

  9. We have one striker and we’ve seen the difference he makes to the whole team set up.

    I expect Iheanacho to start.

Unfortunately I expect Yang to start as well being as how Forrest is a 20 minute player now.

So we’ve got some clear limitations but I expect a good game. Hibs won’t bunker.

5th October – Jock Steins birthday.

I am sure they could come up with a better protest to allow a celebration for Jock while reminding the board – football without fans is nothing

From previous thread – good chat on “new reality”.

    C40me – on cui bono?

Yes, Brendan certainly does … if this positioning helps frame any lack of achievement this season.

Limits the damage to his brand and resumé

(Everyone in a team construct is self serving to some degree. Even guys wearing halos. It’s reality. I don’t mind it that much)

If he continues to pipe this tune though? … that would be a problem for me.

Planning to fail stuff, similar to the CL PO.

If it is a one off statement akin to a sit rep

“We’re here. We deal with it. Upwards” type thing?

Could be an effective call to action for the fans to get on board.

The point is season ticket NON renewal.

The PLC know that fans don’t have the balls for that, so they will say glib stuff and sit it out until the protests die away.

  21. My wee mum used to silently protest my auld man on Saturdays and parts of Sunday mornings, due to his state of inebriation the night before. She would start talking to him as they were going into St. Ignatius Chapel for 12 mass, just so that they could pretend to play happy families. But… everyone else over the age of 50 was in the same boat at this time:))))

Some of you talking about the places you used to go to listen to music. Nothing could match the back room of the Cross Keys in the early 90s when I would be bartending to the rowdy rabble as Athenrye, or various other Reb bands were playing. Then I would ring the bell for closing and the young uns would head to the Stag, or even venture to Motherwell or Hamilton.

    Ahh the Auld days.

  24. It is unforgivable that Celtic Park looks likely to be emptier next Thursday than Greyskull was last night. The protesters can save the pious – we are doing this for the good of the club BS. You are not supporting the team in a crucial European tie and you are drumming up hysteria to reduce a vital source of revenue for the club. Celtic fans, oh aye?

  25. Back to Basics – Glass Half Full @ 1:37 pm,

This is what Brendan Rodgers said this time last year…

“For us it’s looking to bring our game to the next level,” Rodgers said. “I think how we’ve been performing over probably the last six, seven months has just been increasing.”

No managing expectations, in fact he told us his aim was to get Celtic to the next level and that is what he did.

Unlike the Board and the Executive we are not seeing BR&CO managing expectations and making excuses.

Last year he put pressure on himself, the staff and the players to deliver, as the incremental improvements we had seen over the last three seasons were bringing dividends and we could realistically be a UCL side.

We went on to prove we could deliver.

The prepartions and support the Club have had from the Board and Executive in 2025 has not only been non-existent, it has actually been detrimental.

The team has regressed massively and we just need to look at Brugge, our peers this time last year, to see what a Club with proper Directors who understand a football club, give support, with a solid infrastructure with clear forward planning and goals can achieve

Celtic Football Club on the other hand do not have a single Board member or Executive that truly understands what it entails to run a football team.

We have many examples and while 2025 has not been the worst it was pretty indicative of the poor strategies (if they actually exist) and piss poor execution.

It is that straw that broke the camals back and the support are not stupid.

Have you any idea the hours, commitment, expertise and talent it took over three seasons to get Celtic Football Club to where we were last year?

It is much easier to wreck that hard work than maintain it – the cowards wrecked it.

If BR&CO were making excuses for underperformed last season there may be a point to your argument but it was the opposite, people were thinking we will never be a UCL side, he set the bar too high.

So Brendan Rodgers is just being a realist, plain and simple – he knows the teams capabilities and he can’t go around making daft claims about being world class, then crap excuses about the FSR stopping player teading, then cowardly sleekit attacks in the SMSM to misdirect.

He is a very practical guy, with practical goals.

    Hail Hail

  26. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 26TH SEPTEMBER 2025 1:37 PM

Without wanting to fill up another blog comments section with this I think it’s a basic callback to the Summer. The Kairat fiasco followed by the flaccid draw against the Huns were such a blow to his reputation that he’s been working hard to rebuild it since.

I think it’s too important to him for it not to play a big part in his work this season, unfortunately

  27. “Unlike the Board and the Executive we are not seeing BR&CO managing expectations and making excuses.”

Whether the board did do it or not, it’s exactly what we’re seeing.

  28. At least the silent protest let’s the guys use their crayons uninterrupted in decorating the paper planes. Also good for the folding concentration 😀😀😀
