Hibs fail to lay a glove on simmering Celtic

136

We will never know, but we can hope that VAR would have intervened, if Hibernian’s only attempt on target in their Scottish Cup tie at Celtic Park yesterday, managed to beat Kasper Schmeichel.  It came directly from a throw-in which was taken 15 yards closer to goal than the place the ball left the field, and allowed Hibs to pivot play behind the Celtic defence.

Apart from that moment, Hibs failed to lay a glove on the Celtic player with the gloves, their 15 game unbeaten run ended on the same patch of ground they last lost.  The game remained tense until Adam Idah scored the second in the 92nd minute, but any nerves among the home support was based on the notion that surely the visitors could not go an entire game without producing a legitimate chance.  We were wrong.

Celtic bossed the game from the off, pinning Hibs into their own half.  Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate could have opened the scoring before the breakthrough.  Hibs’ Cadden twins did well to subdue Jota and Nicolas Kuhn on the wings, but the visitors lost Nicky Cadden midway through the first half.

His replacement, Obida, lost Kuhn as the German drifted into the heart of the box to meet a cross from Jeffrey Schlupp.  Jordan Smith in the Hibs goal could only stop the ball, leaving it hanging for the apex predator, Daizen Maeda to pounce and knock it into the net.

To their credit, Hibs kept the score tight until that late Idah goal, but they were unable to loosen Celtic’s grip on the match.  David Gray was quick to refocus on league duty after the game.  They have a comfortable run of games before the split which he will hope to take maximum points from.

Celtic are now the only west of Scotland team in the Scottish Cup semifinals, after Queen’s Park went down at Pittodrie.  Looking forward to tonight’s draw and another visit to Hampden.

  2. TONTINE TIM,

I don’t know if you are aware that Fr O’Rourke returned to St Michael’s as Parish Priest and eventually retired there. I have known him since I was about 6; my Uncle John, God rest him, taught him to drive. On his 60th anniversary, Celtic presented him with a life size portrait of Jinky, with himself and (to me) the new St Michael’s in the background. He gave a minature version of it to my Dad for my Dad’s 90th.

I believe in his day, he was a fine player. He used to run our boy’s guild team. I’m sure he’s high in heaven, praying for the famous Glasgow Celtic.

*I did, as he was down in Balloch, possibly for a funeral, and was talking to my da, who suggested to me that the PP must get paid a lot more than the curates as he was looking great and well dressed tae.

On the night when we had lost 0-3 going on 6 or God forgive 7 in the SC Final replay of 1963 we were all in the chapel hall and very despondent when we heard the score as we had done very well in the first game, so he told us not too worry as we would get better when that wee player gets older, that wee player was the wee mhan, now I’m not suggesting that he was some kind of mystic, probably just trying to buck us up but by God he was right.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #46 CELTIC 2 HIBS 0 (MAEDA, IDAH)*

    Good evening, friends.

A sun bathed and almost full Celtic Park which included 7,000 visiting fans set the perfect stage for a Scottish Cup Quarter Final involving 2025’s 2 best teams in Scotland. And it was Celtic who came flying out the traps, winning 3 corners in the opening 7 minutes and playing with great pace and passion. Kuhn in particular seemed to be involved in every move, looking dangerous every time he had possession. But despite our pressure and dominant possession there were no real chances to speak of.

In fact, our first real threat came in the 36th minute when Daizen was put clear through on goal but fired over from the edge of the box, under some pressure from Bashiri. But our latest goal machine only had 2 more minutes to wait for his next chance. Schlupp collected a through pass out on the left and his low cross was met by Kuhn. The Hibs keeper did well to stop the shot but when the ball spun up from the save it was Daizen who was quickest to react hammering home the loose ball from 6 yards. A very well deserved one goal lead at half time.

The second half saw Celtic continue to dominate the ball but without any tangible reward. Hibs came a bit more into it as you would expect in a cup tie and there was more of a flow from end to end. I found it absorbing but not as much as Brendan who was so caught up in the match that he completely forgot to make any substitutions until the 75th minute. Calmac and Jota made way for Yang and McCowan and the latter was to have a pretty effective 20 minutes.

Watching the game on TV it seemed apparent that Celtic were very professional in their approach. Cup games are simply about winning through and whilst a 1 goal lead can be nervy, it didn’t seem so to me. No need for us to chase a 2nd by taking any risks we simply kept plugging away whilst our defence coped very well with any potential attacks from Hibs. A couple of close things, particularly a fine right foot shot from Schlupp and a 2 foot stretch (and miss) from Daizen saw the lead remain at just the 1 goal.

Our 3rd substitution on 84 minutes saw my own man of the match Kuhn depart, replaced by Adam Idah through the centre and Daizen moving to the wing. And last years Cup Final hero got his reward in stoppage time. McCowan chased Yang’s through pass and with most of the ball not over the bye line Luke cut it across goal for Idah to nick it home. Game over and another trip to Hampden awaits our treble chasing heroes.

We have now played 46 games this season, winning 33, drawing 8 and losing 5. We have scored 128 and conceded 41 (domestically it’s 113-24 and in Europe it’s 15-17).

Thank you so much to the 84 who voted this time around – 10 higher than the season average. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

    Schmeichel: 2

    McCowan: 15

Wish I hadn’t opened that report.

Can’t stop looking at it now.

SS (or anyone) data reports 15% of English clubs stadia are state or municipality owned.

    That’s 3 of 20 EPL clubs.

I reckon Man City and West Ham are two.

No idea who the 3rd would be ????

  12. 3 home draws and St Johnstone in the Semi Final.

I was flicking between the St. J/Livvy and W.Ham/N’castle games . neither game particularly thrilling ,but in one of them it looked like the players were blindfolded and wearing their boots on the wrong feet .

Guess which one . It also looked like only one game was on a football pitch .

  19. Celtic have spent significant sums of money on the footballing departments infustructure at lennoxtown and barrowfield. That investment is clearly a very good short, medium and longterm use of resources. The inclusion of underground heat pumps and solar panels will keep cost down at barrowfield and the indoor pitch will lead to every age group getting an extra 75 days of quality training away from the elements. I get you play in all weather’s but for development purposes the indoor pitch allows for better quality training sessions.

I expect celtic will look to fully maximise the space/ stadium to the fullest to get best bang for their buck in the first instance. I expect there is still scope in the Lisbon lion stand for more corporate seats and another sports bar (where admin officers are) for ordinary punters. Ultimately, celtic have favoured gradual sustainable growth for years and that won’t change.

In saying that, I don’t beleive for a minute celtic are not looking at stadium expansion and/ or other development I.e. hotel, museum, superstore etc around the stadium.
