Hibs fail to lay a glove on simmering Celtic

136

We will never know, but we can hope that VAR would have intervened, if Hibernian’s only attempt on target in their Scottish Cup tie at Celtic Park yesterday, managed to beat Kasper Schmeichel.  It came directly from a throw-in which was taken 15 yards closer to goal than the place the ball left the field, and allowed Hibs to pivot play behind the Celtic defence.

Apart from that moment, Hibs failed to lay a glove on the Celtic player with the gloves, their 15 game unbeaten run ended on the same patch of ground they last lost.  The game remained tense until Adam Idah scored the second in the 92nd minute, but any nerves among the home support was based on the notion that surely the visitors could not go an entire game without producing a legitimate chance.  We were wrong.

Celtic bossed the game from the off, pinning Hibs into their own half.  Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate could have opened the scoring before the breakthrough.  Hibs’ Cadden twins did well to subdue Jota and Nicolas Kuhn on the wings, but the visitors lost Nicky Cadden midway through the first half.

His replacement, Obida, lost Kuhn as the German drifted into the heart of the box to meet a cross from Jeffrey Schlupp.  Jordan Smith in the Hibs goal could only stop the ball, leaving it hanging for the apex predator, Daizen Maeda to pounce and knock it into the net.

To their credit, Hibs kept the score tight until that late Idah goal, but they were unable to loosen Celtic’s grip on the match.  David Gray was quick to refocus on league duty after the game.  They have a comfortable run of games before the split which he will hope to take maximum points from.

Celtic are now the only west of Scotland team in the Scottish Cup semifinals, after Queen’s Park went down at Pittodrie.  Looking forward to tonight’s draw and another visit to Hampden.

  1. Morning Fholks – Grand Day To Be A Tim…

Good draw for the semi, though no team can live with us at the moment, so an Aberdeen semi, Hearts final might have been better.

We are the finest team in Scotland, I’m sure you will agree…

However, as BRRB says, we should not take anything from granted, St Johnstone are one of Scotland’s top cup sides.

    Good morning CQN

    Another beautiful morning.

If the weather apps are to be believed, we’ve got six days of this to look forward to ….

…. up to and including Sunday.

Training all week in the bright sunshine.

Hopefully the players are refreshed and raring to go.

    Chairbhoy – Ipswich?

    Cheers, CB.

Would never have got that one.

  4. The hand of God on

Was having a read back and had a chuckle at AWOODY’s post who correctly pointed out that Celtic have been drawn at home in every round of this season’s domestic cup competitions. It somehow slipped his mind that his beloved R2ngers also had home draws in every round in both competitions. To be fair in the Scottish cup the played against the mighty Fraserburgh and then faced 10 times winners Queens Park so they were really tough ties.

    According to the BBC :

“They will face a Celtic side who defeated Hibernian 2-1 on Sunday ”

    Hmm…. I must have missed Hibs` goal.

    ——-

    Yip HS.

And not for the first time have they reported obvious factual errors in their headlines around Celtic.

    Only two possible logical explanations.

    Sheer incompetence or trolling.

I know where I would put my money.

Once the foremost news gathering and reporting institution in the world …

… now reduced to a home for parochial, emotionally hamstrung, otherwise unemployable blue balloons.

And no one with any juice gives a damn.

Senior leadership at PQ happy to gulp down their slice of easy money via licence fee.

Editorial leadership lack the guts and moral fibre to take on and break an obvious cabal.

Doesn’t register with Scottish political establishment.

BBC Execs darn sarf have bigger problems.

Even if they were interested in protecting the brand? ..

… they wouldn’t dare interfere up here for fear of some twit in the aforementioned Scottish political establishment running out into the street (or, without a hint of irony, along to PQ) shouting

    “Freedom !!” or “Perfidious Albion”

    The hand of God

I know AWOODY , and I can assure you that he is as much a Celtic man as anyone on here.

    Definitely not a mouldy bun.

You were right to have a chuckle at his post as it was meant tongue in cheek.

  7. BR has hinted he’s interested in signing Schlupp. I’d definitely go for it. The question of does he play ahead of KT is academic. We need 2 CL-strength players for every position. And Schlupp is versatile, can also play in central defence and midfield.

  8. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Sheer unadulterated luck – got Hoople on first attempt.

Time to buy a lottery ticket….

  9. There’s no reason why a club the size of Man Utd can’t build and fill a 100K stadium.

If they manage it, they’ll be untouchable when it filters through to their revenue.

  10. Bada: Avoid Temple Bar for food and drink unless you can claim for expenses. Food and drink not cheap here so GGH’s recommendation could be good, or anywhere in that vicinity.

An Dun – hear you and half agree.

No reason why they couldn’t fill a 100,000 capacity stadium.

2 billion reasons why they couldn’t build one.

  12. Celtic supporters will be housed in three of the four stands at McDiarmid Park when the Scottish Premiership leaders visit St Johnstone on 6 April, the Perth club have announced.

Should Brendan Rodgers’ side win their next two games at home to Rangers and Hearts, they can clinch the title with victory away to Saints, whose fans will be accommodated exclusively in the Geoff Brown Stand against Celtic.

“The 6 April Celtic match has the potential for unique issues,” St Johnstone said in a statement.

“There is increased interest in this game and there is legitimate concern that Celtic supporters could obtain tickets in home fan areas, creating additional safety issues. We believe it is thus prudent to consolidate our support in the Geoff Brown Stand.

“We always strive to create the best possible home advantage for our team but, in addition to the safety of our fans, we must also consider the financial realities that come with operating as a sustainable football club.

“Substantial additional revenue will be earned from allowing Celtic fans to fill the East Stand, revenue that will benefit our player budget for next season.

“As a result, and following lengthy discussions, we can confirm that away supporters will be allocated the East Stand, North Stand and Ormond Stand. As there are accessible seating areas in the East Stand, we will not be required to sell tickets to away fans in the Geoff Brown Stand.”

The Perth club added that East Stand season ticket holders “will be offered similar, and to the greatest extent possible, upgraded seats in the Geoff Brown Stand”.

St Johnstone also say the approach adopted for the Celtic game “is not a definitive position going forward and will form part of our test and learn process”.

Scottish Cup holders Celtic have been drawn to face St Johnstone in the semi-finals, which are scheduled to be played at Hampden over the weekend of 19 and 20 April.
