Hibs hand of history, our Coefficient Monkeys deliver again

243

The Scottish Cup quarter-finals get underway tonight as Hearts and Dundee get the chance to become the first side into the semis.  Tomorrow, Queen’s Park visit Aberdeen while Livingston are home to St Johnstone on Monday evening.

Having watched Queen’s Park crumble against Scott Brown’s Ayr United on Tuesday, I don’t expect the lower league side to remain in the competition after their visit to Pittodrie.  Fellow Championship club Livingston will fancy their chances against St Johnstone.  Livi are still in contention for the title but will comfortably finish in the promotion play-off places.  They could yet have a more important couple of games against the Perth side this season.

You and I have a great cup tie to look forward to on Sunday.  Sure Celtic Park will be covered in banners of green, as so many people leave Edinburgh for a sporting event you would think the rugby was on.  Try, though the club often has, to forget it, Hibernian have a different heritage to much of Edinburgh, indeed, for their first 45 years of their existence, Leith was a town in its own right.

Hibs performances have earned them the right to feel the hand of history upon their shoulder with respect to this season’s Cup.  The last time they won a Scottish Cup tie at Celtic Park was 1902.  Unusually, this was the final and was against Celtic.  It was also the last time they won the Cup until current manager and then captain, David Gray scored the winner in the 2016 final.

When their team is on an historically good run, football fans believe in destiny.  The 7,000 in the away end on Sunday are there to inspire an historic performance out of their team.  You and I have a part to play in making sure that doesn’t happen.

Well done to our Coefficient Monkeys last night.  I have lost count of all the Champions League money they have earned us in recent seasons.  They truly are the most generous collection of ‘turn it on when it suits us’ merchants in the business.

  1. BURNLEY78 @ 10:33 AM,

Here’ how our co-eff is worked out…

Peter Lawwell, Neil Lennon – 3.000

    Dominic McKay, Ange – 6.000

    Micheal Nicholson, Ange – 6.000

    Micheal Nicholson, B. Rodgers – 7.000

    Micheal Nicholson, B. Rodgers – 16.000

    Total – 38.000. Avg – 7.030

Brendan Rodgers has been with us two of the five seasons that count to our current co-eff.

He accounts for 60% of our total.

We are 59th in the UEFA co-eff league, if we went by Brendan Rodgers average we would be 33rd.

    BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 11:13 AM,

Yes, let’s all forget the day the Spiders Won!!

    The Rangerses are back…

    SONSOFERIN @ 11:16 AM,

Yes, the fact is that BURNLEY78 has worked on the perception that he is a super fan who is ITK, so good fholk browse and scroll and pick up these tidbits and believe the nonsense.

It is tiresome of course but we must get the facts out there.

BURNLEY78 now regularly jumps the shark and he did today with his “facts…”

… his cred is now ground zero amongst most regulars.

the nuggets on ff are claiming they added 2 points to their co-effcient, and their higher uefa ranking means more prize money.

they are wrong on all counts.

The win banked 0.4 points to the SCOTTISH overall ranking.

And there is only 2.5m euros prize money by progressing to the next round, so nothing in yet.

6 music are celebrating the 35 year of DMs Violator today. Interviews etc, and only music from 1990 all day.

I’m sure it was you that said they were your favourite band.

That was lucky, just logged in for the first time in a few days! Yes DM are my favourite band and do have 6 Music on today. Charlatans ‘Then’ just played, cracker

1990 was some year for music and probably one of the most exciting of my life.

DM, Stone Roses, Wedding Present, Year of Culture, Graduated, started work , fury Murrys, The Tunnel (thurs), sub club, O’Henry’s, Caskies.

PS Celtic were shite but still went to the games 😎

  4. Fenerbahce fell into the ‘ these are pish’ trap that Killie and Dun Utd did recently and we did at NY.

R2ngers Much better on the break than dominating possession. Last night reminded me of Rangers in 2008 against Sporting and Fiorentina.

With a proper striker they would have done an Arsenal. Mourinho was right that 1-3 was a good result based on the game.

Interesting to see if Fenerbahce have anything next week; they were abysmal last night

  5. PS not fair that R2ngers get so much practice in the Europa and we don’t………………..

  6. The hand of God on

As usual posted at the end of previous article , ah well nothing particularly interesting anyway, looking forward to Sunday should be a cracker

Dead easy coefficency in the Europa, they’ll be bragging about Euro Gers, in the Conference next.

The last of the Cardigan’s team leeched it to a final in Manchester, they’ve Tuped it over and got couldn’t win in Seville either. They haven’t changed, and low block anti football where you don’t need to play sums up their European adventure. Bilbao or Roma the first decent team they’ll meet, will take them out next.

With any luck they’ll give Wee Bazza -iOla who ( has won more EBTs than Brendan Rodgers, worth noting) will get the gig permanently, and teach old enemy Alloa, once and for all.

  9. Last night demonstrates that Sevco can perform at times. They beat us at new year in our last game.We need to be at top of our game on 16th.

We are a better team with better players but still need a performance to win the game

  10. nope, we dont need to be at the top of our game, we just need to be better than them.

What links this group of clubs –

Celtic, St Mirren x 2, Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen and Queens Park.

Shoot early and shoot often. Butland is crap.

Even if by some abomination we get beat so what.

    The league is over.

  11. glendalystonsils on

It’s not just the Sevco we need to thank for boosting CL income , we also need to thank the fitba Gods who were smiling on us when they drew Sevco against an abysmal opponent in Fenerbahce. The second leg at their zoo , with all the baying animals behind them should be a formality.

I don’t underestimate them , but we were as far off it as I’ve seen last time around .

BSR is spot on , first quality/properly prepared team they meet will pap them out .

  12. I don’t think it’s a case of them raising their game for Europe – more so a case of them being suited in sitting back and counter attacking.

While they continue to play like this, they’ll be nowhere near winning the league.

  13. Chairbhoy

Contrast and compare your hero with 23 points coefficient vs our bedraggled rivals across the city with their 31 in the same period despite the massive spend in the squad which we have. Do you really think that’s good.

The facts are simple. I certainly never suggested the previous 3 years were good from a Celtic perspective either. At no time and nowhere have I suggested this.

You can continue your personal abusive agenda. . I am only quoting facts.

I don’t think you determine anyone’s credibility btw.

  14. SATURDAY 7TH

I received a most welcome note tonight from Bernie, my sister. old Bernie. I love her and think she’s the greatest.

I am now convinced that the authorities intend to implement strict isolation soon, as I am having trouble in seeing my solicitor. I hope I’m wrong about the isolation, but we’ll see.

It’s only that I’d like to remain with the boys for as long as possible for many reasons. If I’m isolated, I will simply conquer it.

A priest was in today, somewhat pleasant, and told me about Brendan O Cathaoir’s article in The Irish Times during the week, which I saw. We had a bit of discussion on certain points, which, of course, were to him contentious. He was cordial in his own practised way, purely tactical, of course, and at the same time he was most likely boiling over inside, thinking of the reference to this week’s AP/RN (February 28th issue) calling him a collaborating middle-class nationalist, or appropriate words to that effect.

He is too, says I, and I sympathise with those unfortunate sons of God who find themselves battling against the poverty, disease, corruption, death and inhumanities of the missions…

I am 61 kgs today, going down. I’m not troubled by hunger pangs, nor paranoiac about anything pertaining to food, but, by God, the food has improved here. I thought I noticed that during the last hunger-strike. Well, there is a lot at stake here.

I got the Irish News today, but there’s nothing in it, that’s why I got it.

I’m looking forward to seeing the comrades at Mass tomorrow, all the younger looking faces, minus the beards, moustaches, long rambling untamed hair matted in thick clumps.

One thing is sure, that awful stage, of the piercing or glazed eyes, the tell-tale sign of the rigours of torture, won’t be gone – if it is ever removed. I wonder is it even conceivable that it could be erased from the mind?

We got a new comrade during the week. Isn’t it inspiring the comrades who keep joining us? I read what Jennifer said in court. (On being sentenced, Jennifer McCann said: ‘I am a Republican prisoner of war and at the moment my comrade Bobby Sands is on hunger-strike to defend my rights as a political prisoner.’) I was touched and proud, she is my comrade.

I’ve been thinking of Mary Doyle and Ellen McGuigan and all the rest of the girls in Armagh. How can I forget them?

The Screws are staring at me perplexed. Many of them hope (if their eyes tell the truth) that I will die. If need be, I’ll oblige them, but my God they are fools. Oscar Wilde did not do justice to them for I believe they are lower than even he thought. And I may add there is only one thing lower than a Screw and that is a Governor. And in my experience the higher one goes up that disgusting ladder they call rank, or position, the lower one gets…

It’s raining. I’m not cold, my spirits are well, and I’m still getting some smokes — decadence, well sort of, but who’s perfect. Bad for your health. Mar dheas anois, Oíche Mhaith.

  15. An Dun

I agree for most domestic games it won’t work for them. It may do vs us ? Who knows ? I think factoring in how poor last nights opponent was is also important. The sad situation that despite this we have either failed to drop down into Europa or indeed failed to win any knockout games when we did in the past however long.

  16. Incredible puff piece on Dessers by Tom British on the Shortbread website today. Trying to sell him, by the looks of it.

  17. The issue is that a lesser league/s get the same co-efficient points as the most difficult league for wins and draws , that should be changed.

On the subject of credibility. Just checking that you are still of the opinion we did not have an easy series of opponents in the league phase of the CL.

I would love to know, apart from Villa, which teams we could have played would have been easier looking at domestic and European form.

  21. With Red Star and Bodo already occupying 2 of the seeded slots for next years play offs these 6 leagues are the only ones with teams who could be seeded above us in next seasons play off draw.

These teams need to win their leagues hence why keeping tabs on them is of interest as the season reaches its final 10-12 games.

Zagreb, Olympiakos , Ferencvaros, RB Salzburg, Shakhtar and Copenhagen are the teams we don’t want to win.

    Croatia

Rejika are leader by 1 point and play tonight against Sibenik who are bottom. Hadjuk (2nd) play Gorica who are second bottom tomorrow and finally, also tomorrow, Zagreb go to 5th placed Belupo. Zagreb are 7 behind the leaders with 12 games to go.

    Ukraine

As noted Kyiv won in the final minute yesterday and Shakhtar in third place could only draw. Oleksandriya are in second place a point ahead of Shakhtar and play today. Kyiv are 10 clear of Shakhtar but have played a game more. Next fixtures for these 2 are Tuesday.

    Denmark

Copenhagen dropped 2 points at Aalborg last week and so now lead by just 1 from Mitdjyland. Both have routine fixtures this Sunday and next week so not expecting much to change. Copenhagen should be finished with European competition next week after they go to Chelsea.

    Hungary

Puskas Academia surprisingly lost at Diosgyor and Ferencvaros sneaked a late point at ETO last week. Both should win this week which would leave Puskas still 4 points clear.

    Greece

Olympiakos won last week at AEK and have gone 5 points clear. Despite their defeat to Bodo in Europa they are unfortunately now looking strong favourites here. AEK and Olympiakos should win fairly easy fixtures this weekend.

    Austria

RB Salzburg revival is a real worry here. Although still 4th last week they beat leaders Sturm Graz and have closed the gap from 12 to 6 points in 3 weeks. Sturm, Austria Vienna and Wolfsburg are above them. RB are the form horse though. All 4 should win this weekend. With 12 games to go and the top teams to play each other twice these are a real concern.

Overall if the leagues stopped now Celtic would be ranked 3rd of the winners, after Olympiakos and Copenhagen and would be seeded for play offs in the final 5th seed place.

Let’s hope it stays that way !

  22. I’m looking forward to the game, Hibs look like a well coached and organised team from what I’ve seen of them, who have worked out a way to present us with a proper challenge without spoiling the game.

As for The Huns, their ability to get results when not expected says a lot – they aren’t as bad as domestic form suggests, and its their mentality thats holding them back. They are more comfortable as underdogs than top dogs, which would worry the life out of me if it was Celtic
