Hide your scarf, your ref for the League Cup semi

898

Q. So you were a Rangers season ticket holder, when did you stop?
A. A few years ago.  I work weekends and was seldom getting to games.

Q. How do you feel about how Rangers were treated in 2012?
A. How do any of us feel?  It wasn’t our fault, one guy came in and did all the damage, then sinister forces took advantage.  Every last one of us feel the same way.

Q. How do you feel about the League Cup semi-final, are you looking forward to it?
A. Not really, but we need to do whatever it takes to make sure we don’t get embarrassed.  Years of being subjected to the effects of what Charles Green called “bigotry” means we need to fight with everything we’ve got.  We can’t let Celtic embarrass us, need to stand up to them.

Q.  Thanks, Robert.  One more question, are you available to referee that game?
A.  You know me, aye ready!

The forthcoming League Cup semi-final will be one of the most difficult games to referee and police in the history of Scottish football.  The police will have their most experience Match Commander on duty.  The SFA will not have their most experienced referee on duty, instead they have given the game to former Rangers season ticket holder, Bobby Madden.

The authorities must be independent and be seen to be independent.  Former season ticket holders are acceptable and welcome as referees, but when you face extraordinary circumstances, take extraordinary care in selecting your referee.  I don’t know a single ‘Rangers’ fan who doesn’t have animated views on what happened in recent years.  They want to beat us next month more than at any time in original-Rangers 140-year history.  Why is one of them the referee?

Craig Thomson is widely regarded as unaligned and Scotland’s top official.  There must be a story explaining why he wasn’t given the game.

Our team selection for the League Cup semi-final doesn’t bother me.  We can have Scepovic, Guidetti, Stokes or Griffiths up front, Efe and Charlie at the back, I’d still back us to win.  Can’t say I’m too worried about the other lot either, even if they manage to hold onto all their, ‘stars’.

What does concern me is how the game is refereed.  Before it, CQN will write about how important it will be to keep 11 men on the field, not to dive into tackles inside our penalty area, and not to get drawn into a levelling battle.

You can write the script about how this one is going to play out, we’ll be kicked, elbowed and incited, with liberal dramatic tumbles taken in and around our box.  In a decade writing CQN I’ve only discussed referees around a dozen times but the selection for this one is alarming. Mr Madden will be scrutinised more than at any time in his professional life.  He has an enormous challenge ahead.

Maybe we should publicly offer Madden a season ticket for Celtic Park,as his former favourites are no longer with us.

I think it would be a nice conciliatory gesture.

    Made up answers?

Do we just accept Bobby Madden a previously demoted referee as another example of how the cheating has never stopped, and the SFA remain corrupt. Madden was hand picked when Dundee Utd beat them at iPox, despite his best efforts.

Was Bobby Madden acceptable for the rest of the old clubs we play against in the SPL?

Why bother when our club has no voice, ( even on more important issues ) they’re busy trying to punt tickets for this game, that most Celtic fans know shouldn’t be taking place.

Bobby Madden is exposed in the modern day Celtic media but he’s no different to David Syme with his previous League Cup form, for the deceased Rangers.

As many post on here time after time it’s business as usual

I think I agree with you on that one. There will have been other more sensational but for sheer anti-Celticness that one takes the biscuit. Think about it. Off sides etc are not always easy to spot. Likewise penalties etc and many official make mistakes in those situations. I cannot, though, think of any official EVER making a mistake in that particular area.I have seen them NOT spot the `keeper overstep the line but NEVER the other way as in Boruc`s case. A still photo` showed Artur to be about FOUR FEET inside the box when he released the ball!!!

  8. It shows how desperate and pathetic the huns at the SFA are, they will try anything to give their beloved team an advantage.

Its so transparent that it beggers belief.

But nobody from the Celtic board will challenge it, they are complicit in it.

IMO if you wont oppose cheating, especially if you have knowledge of it, then you are party to it.

Sad state of affairs when they can pull strokes like this.

Just makes you sick of scoddish fitba….nothing ever changes.

The decrepit masonic influence on football should be challenged…..the SFA is totally bent, and nothing is done about it…..shame.

These things can work both ways, but the key thing Imho is not so much about the individual, but the processes and proceedures which allow decisions like this to be made.

  14. There have been many but for a single 90mins the “randy revs” performance for deadco against Dundee Utd will take some beating

  15. Surely if the SFA wanted to have a fair League Cup semi final they would have bent over backwards to appoint a ref that had no obvious leanings to either side .

If they really wanted to ensure fair play they could have appointed an English or European ref.

But no….. We got Madden and I smell a rat big style.

    The great con continues unabated

  16. im not a great believer in the “refs are all out to get us” theory

Late in the game, the games all square with Celtic pushing fro a winner.

Lineman awards free kick to falkirk after he adjudged the Holy Goalie to have handling the ball outside the box. THG was kicking the ball up the park at the time.

Few minutes later Marc Antione Fortune gets wrestled to the ground in the penelty box- no penelty.

  24. JJ,

There are currently more than one or two Grade 1 refs/assistant refs who are, lets say, “Celtic-minded”.

What difference, if any, that would make in them reffing one of our games, is IMO, minimal.

OK, Madden will be the first ref who has been in charge of Celtic v Sevco, but lets face it, there were many, many rangers-affiliated refs in charge of Celtic v rangers games before they were liquidated (names already mentioned like Tait and Davidson, and of course the “legendary” David Syme and Tiny Wharton) And we won a load of those games, and that was against rangers teams who were much more “competitive” than sevco’s team.

Im sure he will have an influence on the game, but im also certain we will not only beat them, but we will gub them, in spite of his influence.

Not to mention the fact that Maddens past affiliation is being highlighted and will put more of the spotlight on him for the upcoming game. Possibly leading to him being less “influential” than might otherwise have been the case.

However, regardless of what I have said above, it is still a ridiculous appointment.

John Greig takes a place in the record books by creating the longest period of time between his first league goal in the fixture and his last. He scored his first Old Firm goal in the 4-0 win at Ibrox on Ne’er Day 1963 and fifteen years and 6 days later scored his last in this fixture.

Unfortunately, this match was marred by two minutes of mayhem caused by dreadful refereeing by John Gordon. Celtic were trailing by a goal to nil and pressing hard for an equaliser when Joe Craig, Celtic’s centre forward, was pushed in the back by Colin Jackson as he tried to head the ball in at the far post.

Jim Reynolds in the Glasgow Herald stated that it looked a clear penalty but the referee said ‘no’ and was besieged by irate Celtic players. While the protests were going on, Rangers took a quick goal-kick, and with only Frank Munro and Peter Latchford against a five man attack, John Greig finished off the move by tapping the ball into the net to make it 2-0.

The Celtic fans came over the wall and the players refused to restart the game. Celtic’s trainer Neilly Mochan went into the centre circle to prompt the players to resume.

Reynolds asked five questions in his report on the game:

Why was a legitimate penalty claim turned down in the first place?

Why did the referee give everyone the impression he was running to consult his linesman, and then change his mind when he saw Rangers breaking towards the Celtic goal?

Rangers had decided to play the whistle and promptly took what they thought would be a goal kick.

Why did he allow the goal kick to be taken, when there were several Celtic players inside the penalty area?

Why did he not send off the Celtic players who pushed and jostled him and refused to start the game?

Why did he not caution Neil Mochan, who had no right to be on the pitch without the referee’s permission?

Back then, referees were not permitted to make statements in the way they have been encouraged to in the early part of the 21st century. Therefore, Mr Gordon did not reply to Mr Reynolds.
