Hide your scarf, your ref for the League Cup semi

898

Q. So you were a Rangers season ticket holder, when did you stop?
A. A few years ago.  I work weekends and was seldom getting to games.

Q. How do you feel about how Rangers were treated in 2012?
A. How do any of us feel?  It wasn’t our fault, one guy came in and did all the damage, then sinister forces took advantage.  Every last one of us feel the same way.

Q. How do you feel about the League Cup semi-final, are you looking forward to it?
A. Not really, but we need to do whatever it takes to make sure we don’t get embarrassed.  Years of being subjected to the effects of what Charles Green called “bigotry” means we need to fight with everything we’ve got.  We can’t let Celtic embarrass us, need to stand up to them.

Q.  Thanks, Robert.  One more question, are you available to referee that game?
A.  You know me, aye ready!

The forthcoming League Cup semi-final will be one of the most difficult games to referee and police in the history of Scottish football.  The police will have their most experience Match Commander on duty.  The SFA will not have their most experienced referee on duty, instead they have given the game to former Rangers season ticket holder, Bobby Madden.

The authorities must be independent and be seen to be independent.  Former season ticket holders are acceptable and welcome as referees, but when you face extraordinary circumstances, take extraordinary care in selecting your referee.  I don’t know a single ‘Rangers’ fan who doesn’t have animated views on what happened in recent years.  They want to beat us next month more than at any time in original-Rangers 140-year history.  Why is one of them the referee?

Craig Thomson is widely regarded as unaligned and Scotland’s top official.  There must be a story explaining why he wasn’t given the game.

Our team selection for the League Cup semi-final doesn’t bother me.  We can have Scepovic, Guidetti, Stokes or Griffiths up front, Efe and Charlie at the back, I’d still back us to win.  Can’t say I’m too worried about the other lot either, even if they manage to hold onto all their, ‘stars’.

What does concern me is how the game is refereed.  Before it, CQN will write about how important it will be to keep 11 men on the field, not to dive into tackles inside our penalty area, and not to get drawn into a levelling battle.

You can write the script about how this one is going to play out, we’ll be kicked, elbowed and incited, with liberal dramatic tumbles taken in and around our box.  In a decade writing CQN I’ve only discussed referees around a dozen times but the selection for this one is alarming. Mr Madden will be scrutinised more than at any time in his professional life.  He has an enormous challenge ahead.

It is always good to give to worthy causes.

The chaps who have recently bought shares in Rangers International Football Club (RIFC) over the last week have made good some of the losses of Laxey Partners and the institutional investors who sold up.

I am sure these hedge fund folk are very grateful.

Anyone who wishes to take control of RIFC and run it will find their lives revolving around making regular donations to Big Mike, Charles of Normandy and some shy offshore chaps.

Of course The People think that Dave King will be a sugar daddy, but these monarchy fixated chaps would really love a Lord in the Blue Room.

However Lord Sugar won’t be their guy.

The star of ‘the apprentice’ was asked by some fellow n Twitter if he would like to invest in ‘Rangers’.

    His answer was unequivocal:

“‏@Lord_Sugar @meiklerfc RT: fancy investing in Rangers big man?……simply answer NO”.

Now here IS money to be made from the current Ibrox entity, but only if you are one of the beneficiaries of an Onerous Contract.

If there are other emotional types who wish to keep it breathing then that’s even better.

Indeed, it can be all Brogues, Poppies and Loving Cups in the Blue Room for all these guys care.

For them it is a dripping roast for as long as RIFC is alive and the contracts are in place.

Removing those legally binding agreements will be costly, difficult and time consuming.

The stenographers mistakenly believe (gasp) that this about controlling a football club at Ibrox called Rangers.

I doubt if Big Mike has ever set foot in the place and if he has it meant nothing to him.

As long as he controls the advertising space and the retail side of things then he’ll be happy with whoever is sitting in the director’s box at Ibrox.

Particularly the retail deal, that’s really his thing.

Unless it was a small emotional donation then anyone who bought RIFC shares at the Initial Public Offering in 2012 made a huge error and most of them of them know that now.

If they do not then they are too stupid to be in business.

Similarly the people now buying RIFC shares, despite their background in business, are emotionally driven to purchase them.

That’s their problem right there because they’re up against a guy who does not like to lose and doesn’t care a thing about the Ibrox culture.

One of the stranger things in this series of the saga is the fact the biggest shareholder in RIFC now is the very chap who had been telling people not to do business with them in the normal fashion.

The season ticket fund last spring, although it was a flop in itself, probably contributed to the fall off in sales.

Then there is the on field shambles.

The Fitba experts I speak to all cast doubt on this current Sevco squad making it out of the championship.

If that is true then even more cost cutting will be required next season.

Unfortunately many of The People want a front loaded war chest dragged up the Marble Staircase.

Indeed some of them are already indulging in message board discussions about what star player will be first on the Dave King shopping list.

At the moment they have hope.

However The People now have a billionaire with wealth off the radar as their sworn enemy.

That’s a nice twist by the scriptwriters there.

However they have opened the door to a better future for The People in the next series.

    That’s very charitable of them.

    Chapeau.

Or the semi defeat by utd last season. Or the 1-0 defeat from Stirling?

Geordie, fair points and I for one am not that bothered about Madden getting the gig because Paul’s article brings out into the open the nonsense of the SFA. This might in fact curtail Madden’s more extreme behaviour (though I wouldn’t bet on it).

Chris VC and others. Thanks. I asked because I was unaware of any and, had one existed, I would have thought our Media would have made sure we were all made very aware of the fact!

I`ve got a feeling Collum is reasonably fair but unreasonably useless.

JJ, two points in reply. In his first ‘Old Firm’ game (the one of the penalty given with the special eyes in the back of his head) in the run up to the game the media were not slow to ask the open question about how an R E teacher in a Catholic school would handle the pressure of such a match. His performance showed, in my mind, that Gollum had done plenty of reading of the press before the game. Secondly I agree that he is useless, but I personally don’t know any Celtic fans who think he his fair. IMO he would have been the worst appointment for the game because, after his non-penalty award for us in the Hearts game he now owes us a big decision against us and that game would have been the very one to do pay back.

How on earth can you find a link between Rangers and today’s latest Islamic fascist outrage?

  27. It’s a game against a club that was parachuted into the 3rd division from a position of non existence, leapfrogging other clubs to get there.

They shouldn’t be anywhere near a league cup semi in the first place, let alone what help they had in getting there.

On top of that, they shouldn’t be competing this year as they are having issues paying their tax bills due to over-spending – a repeat offence if the SFA insists on recognising them as the same club.

Regarding this fixture, there’s a lot more to it than the game itself, when you consider the context – Focus and the SNP review due from Stirling uni, SFA & SPFL apparent infighting, Sevco shunnanigans etc etc.

Who knows what they have in store for our supporters and the club’s reputation at this fixture – that’s what worries me.

Regarding the refereeing, those who insist on repeating the mantra, just pump them on the pitch, and those that might care to repeat the paranoia accusation from during Operation Hun Rescue, where we had to play them 7 times in one season, how did that pan out?

It’s too late to do anything about it all now (although personally I’d tell the “authorities” to stick their cup where the sun doesn’t shine).

If John Reid’s promises had amounted to anything, we wouldn’t have the above concerns and would be looking forward to a good cup game regardless of who the opposition was, that our supporers could enjoy without harrassment or slander.
