Highland trips shadow final Champions League round

501

This time next week Celtic will have played two competitive games, both at home, and we will have a chance to properly assess preseason preparations.  Even if victories are achieved against HJK Helsinki and Aberdeen the challenges for the remainder of the month, with at least four and possibly five games away from Celtic Park, with the possibility of only one home game, in the final Champions League qualifying round, will ensure Celtic are tested to their limit.

Two trips to the Highlands ahead of the Champions League qualifiers would be an unwelcome distraction.  Maybe an occasion for the youth and fringe players.

    From SkyText – quite funny…

The Rangers made a positive start in their first competitive match with a 2-1 victory over Brechin in the Ramsdens Cup, although they required extra-time in front of a full house at Glebe Park.

It took the Third Division new boys just four minutes to open the scoring when new signing Andy Little, playing as a trialist, got between two defenders and slotted the ball under the advancing Michael Andrews.

Andy Jackson made great strides down the hedge-side of the ground and cut the ball inside to Craig Molloy, whose low drive was held by Neil Alexander as the hosts tried to hit back quickly.

Little’s penalty appeals were then waved away by referee George Salmond, who instead awarded a corner to Rangers.

Jackson (43) took advantage of sloppy defending involving Kirk Broadfoot and Doran Goian before sliding the ball between Alexander and his near post to level for City.

Ian Black – another new Rangers arrival – forced Andrews into a save from a free-kick and the Brechin keeper later clutched a flick from Barry McKay.

Lee McCulloch settled the tie in favour of Ally McCoist’s men when he bundled the ball in from close range at a corner 12 minutes into the added period.

i hate the idea of changing the leagues structure to get newco in spl asap, however, i am of the view that a larger league is needed in scotland. i hope thant such a move sees better competition in scottish football in the long term and that everyone will benefit.

so long as the young bhoys are good enough there is no harm in putting them into any games in the spl. bhoys like watt, fraser and philip Tw have shown up well when given the opportunity, towell has played well in spl for killie and i am sure given a chance others would shine. give me any of these players over your murphys, radmusion, banguras any day of the week.

no matter what happens with regards our young players, i dont think the league will be ours just as easily as others have predicted, with rangers gone just about every challengers has gained 12 points or so. i think the best think that could happen this season is celtic entering the cl group stages and being run close by one or two clubs, maybe, aberdeen, hearts or dundee united. hopefully by the time the league is restrucutred and sevco play in it several teams will have gotten used to challenging and winning things.

    I just read Green’s pre-match rant. It’s not a good start.

“I had meetings last week with some Uefa officials who say this is unprecedented in Europe.”

While it might appease those Huns who have decided to follow this new club – it really is not a good idea to make up tales like that.

Watched Sevco in a bar in Puerto del Carmen earlier today.

Problem 1: Explaining to bar man to put on Ch 168, after he suggested no sport ever on that Sky Channel.

Problem 2: Explaining to said bar man that it was a Gaelic channel and no need to increase volume.

Problem 3: Explaining to all and sundry who bothered to ask, where/who is/are Brechin.

Problem 4: Explaining to English (toy) Hun that they were effectively playing a Johnstone Paints Trophy match, which he could not grasp.

Solution: Was proudly wearing The Hoops.
